    Inspired by the Japanese engravings Amsterdam merchants were using as wrapping paper in 1871, the Claude Monet became so taken with images, he began a lifelong love affair with all things Japanese. When at last he earned enough money to afford land, Monet purchased property near his house in Giverny, and began to design a garden that would eventually encompass a footbridge, vegetable gardens and a water garden. Though his famous water lilies were planted without regard for their potential as a subject for his paintings, a revelation one summer day would eventually consume the next 30 years of his life. That pond-side inspiration would become the basis for a series of approximately 250 paintings.
