1970s Hair Trend: The Afro

The 1970s saw a return to more natural hair styles, including the Afro. Actress Pam Grier, songstress Donna Summer and political activist Angela Davis all rocked the 'fro. Now, with the resurgence of 1970s fashion and style, Solange Knowles has adopted this natural look as part of her great style.

I wore a good size 'fro for about ten years then the punk era came in and I cut my 'fro. I am a white girl with curly hair and an afro suited my hair type.

My hair naturally curly when washed and air dryed and bone straight when blown dry. I am mixed-up, (LOL) Black, White and Native American. In the 70's when everyone had an afro, I didn't miss a beat. Wish I could post my big bush that was perfect. Here's how: Dippidy-Do gel, (hope they still make it, it's a green gel, maybe blue), the smallest pink sponge rollers, an afro pic and a cake cutter (looks like a huge steel comb). Part VERY small sections of your hair, apply dippity-do, brush straight and then roll on sponge rollers. I had to sit under the hair dryer at least an hour plus as my hair was shoulder length. After drying, I would just sleep in the rollers until morning. When you remove the rollers, you will have a very tight curl that is springy. Take the cake cutter and afro pick and begin to comb (pick-out) lightly, you don't want to lose the curl but your hair is now frizzy with curl. As you pick it out, it will begin to take shape. Then you take a sheer nylon scarf, wet it and lightly place it over your hair. Pat lightly into the shape of the afro. You might have to pick in different places to get it right, but it will work. It might me tight the first day, but the curls will loosen, by the next. If you shower, the steam (not too much) will help loosen the curl. Don't get it wet...it's over if you do. This style would only last me 2 to 3 days and then I had to repeat. A word of caution, DON'T GET CAUGHT IN THE RAIN, it will flop! My hair would first look like picture #30. After I put the wet scarf on my hair and patted it into place, I would then look like #23. It has to be a nylon sheer scarf, they don't retain water. Trust me when I tell you, it will work! Back in the day, the bigger yo' fro'...the cooler you were! And if your man had a big fro' as well, ya' just couldn't get any cooler than that!

I'm so glad natural hair is making a comeback! For too long the fashion industry has been too hard on beautiful Black hair.

I absolutely adore this look. It's sexy, gorgeous and natural. I'm Latina with wavy hair, but if I had the ability to rock a fro, I would. I have to admit all you beautiful African American ladies out there, I have hair envy.

I finally know that I can do this afro look i'm so glad I don't put a perm in my hair and I keep it natural and just straighten it sometimes so all I need to do is wash my hair dry it out then there's my 'fro!

@sweety03 Depends, do you have curly hair? Kinky/curly works best... if you have a relaxer in it then you either have to chop it off and let it grow out or just let it grow out... then you comb it with a pik or pick comb.

@Sweety03 you don't/can't "turn" your hair into an afro. you are either born with it or you're not.
