When I was in high school, I used to take the train into NYC on Saturday mornings for a flute lesson and spend the rest of the day exploring the city. If I had a term paper due, and I had already done all the research (written neatly on index cards... this was loooong before computers!) I would go to the 42nd Street branch of the New York Public Library, settle myself into the reading room, and write the first draft of my paper. Eating was not permitted in the reading room, but it was always possible to smuggle in a chocolate bar or two, as long as you had unwrapped it earlier and rewrapped it in a handkerchief so there would be no telltale rustle of paper. To my delight the reading room has not changed a bit, except that it is now equipped with WiFi access. I hope that teenage girls still escape from the suburbs to do their homework there.
