The 8th of March - the International women's day - one of favorite holidays in Russia, especially among the senior generation.

The idea to establish the special day of solidarity of working women all over the world was put forward by German revolutionary Clara Tsetkin in 1910 at the female conference in the Danish capital Copenhagen.

Day has been chosen on March, 8th not casually: on March 8th, 1857, female textile workers in New York passed a march on city streets, protesting against low earnings and bad working conditions.

For the first time the International women's day was marked in a number of European countries in 1911. Every year the number of the countries in which this date was marked, grew, and in 1970th years the 8th of March has been proclaimed by the United Nations as the International women's day.

In Russia the International women's day is celebrated since 1913, since 1965 this day became non-working.

Today the holiday has lost the political coloring and is celebrated simply as a holiday when men congratulate women, give them flowers and gifts.
