  • Fritz Hansen 4-Leg Ant Chair - Color
    hivemodern.com
Design Arne Jacobsen, 1952. Steel, laminated wood. Made in Denmark by Fritz Hansen. Despite its minimalist and svelte form, the Ant chair by Arne Jacobsen is extremely comfortable due to its shell design while achieving a beauty and elegance which has made Jacobsen's first stacking chair one of his best-known designs. Although a revolutionary design, the Ant was not an immediate hit when first launched by Fritz Hansen in 1952. The chair had only 3 legs and no arms! The back and seat are made of one piece of laminated wood with 9 layers of molded veneer and 2 layers of cotton textile in-between. The lamination process coupled with the qualities inherent in the wood make the Ant flexible enough to adjust to the body's contours and movements. The Ant is a stackable, wooden chair on a thin chrome or satin chrome steel base with a choice of either natural wood veneer or colors in lacquer or lazur. Available in your choice of two heights. Arne Jacobsen was very productive both as an architect and as a designer. His cooperation with Fritz Hansen dates back to 1934. The Ant and Series 7 chairs, produced in 1952, propelled both Jacobsen and Fritz Hansen's names into furniture history. At the end of the 50's Arne Jacobsen designed the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, which introduced the Egg, the Swan, the Swan sofa and Series 3300 to the design world. Arne Jacobsen was and is an admired and outstanding designer. His furniture and other design work have become a national and international heritage. Note: lazur finish (colored ash): wood grain is clearly visible through the color. Lacquered finish: uniform, silky soft surface with no wood grain visible. low: 20" w | 18.9" d | 31.7" h | seat: 17.3" h. Tall: 20" w | 18.9" d | 31.7" h | seat: 18.3" h.

Design Maarten Baas, 2002. Burnt wood, epoxy resin, leather. Made in The Netherlands by Moooi. Pieces of furniture are literally burned, after which they are preserved in a clear epoxy coating. The beauty and character of burned wood is now captured in a long lasting material, creating the strange sensation of sitting on burnt furniture. Maarten Baas is a Dutch designer who graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in 1996. In 2000 he studied for several months at the Politecnico di Milano. In June 2002 he graduated at the Design Academy a series of burned furniture called "Smoke". Maarten is searching for the boundaries of design, without leaning on the regular "do's and don'ts". The Smoke series includes armchair, dining chair and chandelier. Each item from the Smoke series share the unfamiliar and untamed finish that is categorized by fire. Each piece is unique and may differ due to the process used for production. The smoke chair is upholstered in black leather and has a secret repair kit underneath the seat in case of emergencies. 41.3" h | 29.5" w | seat: 15.75" h.

  • Kartell Joe Colombo 4801 Armchair
    hivemodern.com
Design Joe Colombo. Transparent or batch-dyed PMMA. Made in Italy by Kartell. For the first time in its 60-year history, Kartell will pay homage to one of the most iconic - and perhaps uncharacteristic - pieces in its archive with the reissue of Joe Colombo's 4801 Armchair. Originally designed by the Italian master in 1965, the 4801 chair is famous for being the only Kartell piece ever to be made entirely of wood. Now, nearly fifty years later, Kartell has developed the complex and technically challenging engineering methods necessary to produce the design as originally envisioned, in its signature plastic. An authentic symbol of design in the '60s, the highly sought-after 4801 chair is revered by private collectors and institutions alike, and has been displayed internationally at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The second generation of the 4801 chair is to be available in a numbered series beginning in February 2012, captures the curving sinuous lines and exact proportions of Colombo's design, now in sleek transparent or white and black plastic (PMMA). Joe Colombo, in his design utopia, gathered many of the common hopes of the 60's in Italy and Europe but was never slave to ideological bounds. His extremely fast escalation in becoming an internationally known designer brought him three medals at the XIII Triennale in Milan, the 1967 Compasso d'Oro award and creations which are included in permanent collections around the world. 24.4" w | 25.2" d | 27.2" h | seat: 9.8" h.
