  • Quarter-Back Bates, antique 1920 hardcover book
    etsy.com
This is a 1920 copy of Quarter-Back Bates, authored by Ralph Henry Barbour, an American novelist who wrote popular works of sports fiction for boys. Barbour created highly readable and idealistic stories that taught about the importance of sports, teamwork, and school spirit. From his first published work in 1899 to his death in 1944, he produced more than 100 novels, as well as a number of short stories. The hardcover book features tan cloth binding with black lettering and illustrations of footballs and megaphones on the cover. The binding is in fair condition, with several rips on the front and back spine and considerable cloth wear. The pages, however, are in good condition, with no markings, tears, or creases. It contains several wonderful illustrations by Frank J. Rigney, artist/illustrator and an executive officer of the Boy Scouts of America in the early 20th century. I originally purchased this book to use for a recycling project but couldn’t bring myself to take it apart; it still has considerable life left for at least another generation of young boys’ reading pleasure! It would also make a great addition to anyone’s collection of sports memorabilia.

  • The Trench Book by Nick Foulkes - Assouline
    burkedecor.com
Though it began as a military uniform, the trench coat has become a cornerstone of the twenty-first century wardrobe, a kind of chic yet classic envelope that perfectly balances form and function. From linen to leather, The Trench Book explores the stylish evolution of this outerwear icon in design and fashion: the mystique of a private investigator's coat, the sinister allure of the leather trench, the ultra-sexy sheath with nothing underneath. Produced with the help of the traditional trench brand, Aquascutum, this book is richly illustrated and seriously documented with interesting facts, visiting the heyday of this classic through film, fashion, history, and many contemporary heroes. All in all, The Trench Book is the authoritative volume on a timeless coat.

  • Chanel And Her World Friends, Fashion, And Fame
    pinterest.com
Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel (1883–1971) is a fashion icon unlike any other. She invented modern clothing for women: at the height of the Belle Époque, she stripped women of their corsets and feathers, bobbed their hair, put them in bathing suits, and sent them out to get tanned in the sun. She introduced slacks, costume jewelry, and the exquisitely comfortable suit. She made the first couture perfume—No. 5—which remains the most popular scent ever created. In this beautiful volume, the glorious life of the incomparable Coco Chanel shines again through hundreds of illustrations and the lively prose of Edmonde Charles-Roux, her official biographer and close friend. Chanel knew and collaborated with the likes of Picasso, Diaghilev, Stravinsky, Cocteau, Jean Renoir, and Visconti—even as she matched their modernist innovations by liberating women from the prison of 19th-century fashion and introducing a whole new concept of elegance. The staggering collection of photographs amassed by the author over decades of friendship with Chanel sheds new light on one of the great stories of the modern age.    “A model pictorial biography.” ~ New York Times   “This Chanel biography is as elegantly turned out as its subject.” ~ The Washington Post   “This lavish photo tome brings depth to Chanel’s sleek façade while revealing the fascinating woman behind it.” ~ W   “Edmonde Charles-Roux (is) one of (Chanel’s) best biographers.” ~ The New Yorker   “There have been many books about Chanel, but this is the great classic.” ~ Art of the Times   “This beautiful volume contains hundreds of photographs and lively prose by its author, Edmonde Charles-Roux.” ~ American Salon   “Provides insight into the development of her sense of style and underscores the timelessness of her vision.” ~ Veranda
