Me waffling on how much I enjoyed watching Death Note:
Death Note is an anime that was aired in Japan in 2006-2007 and the English dubbed version was aired in Canada and the U.S a year later. This anime was absolutely insane!! It was so GOOD. It took me a bit of time to get into the series but when I did... I can't even! It is one of the best animes I’ve ever seen! (Besides from Dragonball Z). It was a recommendation from Dan Is Not On Fire. He mentioned on his Younow show that you should watch it if you like anime but even if you don’t like anime you should still watch it. If anyone is interested in watching Death Note, all the episodes are uploaded on Youtube :)
So basically Death Note about a bored genius called Light Yagami, who goes under a drastic change when he discovers a ‘Death Note,’ which is no ordinary notebook because it kills anyone whose name is written in it. He starts to experiment with the notebook finding out it is real and then gets an unexpected visitor, the notebook’s owner, a Shinigami called Ryuk. Light tells Ryuk of his plan to get rid of all the criminals in the world, leaving only people who he has judges to be honest and kind. He calls himself "the god of the new world".
(There are some spoilers present in this review btw).
It’s so strange having the main character turn out to be the antagonist because I ended up really hating Light. I feel like Light has good intentions but he goes WAY too far with this notebook. The idea of playing God goes to his head. It doesn’t help that he is extremely conceited and overly confident. It’s a good thing he’s smart, otherwise he wouldn’t have made it this far. He turns out to be one crazy b!tch. He thinks he’s being justice but he’s not.
I really like L Lawliet! I think he’s a very unusual, but interesting character. Based on his appearance, he looks like a emo, but he is actually a very intelligent and smart world famous detective who has solved many difficult cases. He doesn't show his appearance in the first few episodes, as he works in secrecy but he shows his face to the police force in order to track down Kira. The way he plays with his food is very amusing!
Misa, is a model and actress, but she is incredibly infatuated by Light. It is very cringey to be honest. She told Light she loved him within 5 minutes of meeting him! She is very hyperactive, sweet and cheerful. Her look is like a gothic Lolita, which is cute. But she is extremely annoying and naïve. She is also extremely clingy, whiney and a bit of a brat. If things aren’t going her way, she will whine about it. She is so obnoxious! I wished she wasn’t so damn naïve and opened her eyes to see how manipulated Light was! I really don't know why she let Light use her like a puppet.
Light became such an awful and terrible human being. After Light killed L (spoiler alert) and former girlfriend in the process, I thought, dude you are going DOWN. He was doing so well when he temporarily gave up ownership of the notebook, because when he doesn't have the notebook, he has more compassion, but it didn’t last, sadly. It just sad, you know? I think he and L would have become great besties, solving crimes and bringing justice to the world.
Anyway, the ending was sad but Light got what he deserved.
Overall, I think Death Note is a really great anime to watch, even if you don’t like anime! It just has that suspense and twists in it that makes it so interesting. I initially thought it was a new anime but it isn’t! I loved it.
