So I guess I review books, films, TV shows and anime now lol

The first time I watched Gundam Wing a very very long time ago, it’s been more than a decade. It’s a really old anime, created in 1996-7 and the dubbed English version came out in 2000 airing on Cartoon Network. Re-watching it wasn’t nostalgic because when I watch when I was 11 I didn’t understand what the eff was going on. I understand its concept now but it is a complicated anime to watch if you’re really young because it revolves on pacifism, politics and war. I decided to watch it because the book I recently read ‘Legend’ reminded of it. So I guess something good came out of that boring book.

So plot synopsis: The story of Gundam Wing begins in the year After Colony 195, with the start of Operation Meteor, the scientists' plan for revenge against the OZ military organization. The operation involves five young boys who have each been chosen and trained by one of the five rogue scientists, then sent to Earth independently in extremely advanced Mobile Suits, one designed by each of the scientists, known as "Gundams". Their Mobile Suits are called Gundams because they are constructed from a rare and astonishingly durable material known as Gundanium alloy, which can only be created in outer space.

The five Gundam Pilots originally have no knowledge of each others' existence. On first meeting any of the other five, each pilot believes the others to be enemy pilots in new OZ mobile suit designs. Once the young pilots realize that they have the same objective of destroying OZ (and in some cases the same mission), they band together to help each other complete their goals.

My thoughts:

I actually really enjoyed watching it. Watching one episode isn’t enough and it made me watch more. I think it’s got a decent plot, lots of action and interesting characters. Sometimes the action was a bit much because it was like playing a videogame. I don’t think its a typical anime, it’s more to do with fighting for a peaceful world, than good against evil. Its clear who the enemy is.

I think its just so interesting how people in that world can live in space, which are called colonies. Impossible.

The 5 main Gundam pilots are:

The main protagonist is Heero Yui. He is probably the most complex character I have ever come across (so far). His stoic personality shows that he is a killing machine and was taught to live by his emotions, as he was brought up to be a professional assassin. He speaks in a deadpan monotone showing no emotion. He is reckless, callous and cold.

Duo Maxwell was actually meant to be the protagonist but the writers chose Heero instead. He seems like the most cheerful jokester and happy easy-going pilot, even though he had a terrible past.

Trowa Barton also has a stoic demeanour like Heero. He keeps his emotions in tact and is the most experienced soldier out of the 5 pilots. He is quiet, calm and patient but determined. He hides his feelings well behind an impassive mask. Despite his stoic demeanor, Trowa developed a close friendship with Quatre Raberba Winner.

Quatre Raberba Winner is very wealthy but has a very kind and humble personality. He is a strong believer in pacifism but is a very reluctant soldier, feeling sorrow when he is forced to kill his enemies.

Chang Wufei is a very fierce warrior descended from a clan of Chinese warriors.

My favourite character is Duo! He’s the happiest and has got the best personality. The most interesting characters are Heero and Trowa. I don’t mind Relena. A lot of fans hate her and I can see why. Life’s too short to hate! I think she’s got good intentions and its only because she cares. Some of her actions are a little bit cringe though. The most iconic scene was the cliff and I was like ahhh this is so cringe.

So about Heero x Relena. I ship them so bad! OTP. Helena. That’s actually a name. I really like these two together, even though he did try to kill her 3 times. Who says romance is dead? lols. It is probably because a) she knows too much and b) she’d just be in the way if she were going to stop him. The first time was actually very fatal if it weren’t for Duo! The second time, he could have done it so easily but he couldn’t do for some reason. And the third time, he was going to but then decided to spare her life.

There is nothing romantic because it is said to be symbolic. It’s very bittersweet. It’s hard to tell whether Heero cares about her or not because his face is extremely hard to read. Its odd but I think they’ve got something, you know what I mean?

I really like that second to last episode (ep.48 in the pics in astronaut suits). I am getting a bit spoilery here: They share a bit of a moment before Heero goes to fight Relena’s brother Zechs. Relena thinks Heero is going out to die again because throughout the series he has been on a suicide mission. In the beginning, he doesn’t care whether he lives or dies, but in this scene he said he would protect her (the irony, he wanted to kill her in the beginning) and make it out there alive. Then he pushed her out of the way.

I saw the film afterwards! It was called Endless Waltz and I thought it was really good. I will probably make a film review of it. It just really tied the series together.
