Swedish architect and designer Greta Magnusson Grossman broke through gender barriers to embark on a prolific career. She opened a store on Rodeo Drive, where her furniture and accessories quickly drew the attention of clients such as Greta Garbo, Joan Fontaine and Gracie Allen. In the 1950s, she founded her architecture office and designed 14 homes – 13 in California and one in Sweden – each one a showcase for her quietly dramatic approach. • Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni Arco Floor Lamp
    dwr.com
As a lecturer at the Politecnico di Milano in the 1980s, Achille Castiglioni would implore his students to "Start from scratch. Stick to common sense. Know your goals and means." He clearly took his own advice when he, with his elder brother Pier Giacomo, designed the dramatic Arco Floor Lamp (1962). Inspired by a streetlight, the Arco cleverly provides overhead lighting without requiring ceiling suspension, its polished shade extending nearly seven feet to accommodate a dining table or sofa beneath the light source. Aware that the 78-pound lamp would be difficult to move, the designers smartly placed a hole in the base to accommodate a broom handle. They also gave the Arco an adjustable arc and swiveling shade for precise lighting control. As groovy as it is elegant, the lamp's iconic status was sealed when it appeared on screen alongside Sean Connery in Diamonds Are Forever and in The Italian Job (apropos). The Arco is included in the permanent collection at MoMA. Bulb (included): incandescent 100W/120V/A21SB. Made in Italy.

The AJ Floor is designed amoung a lot of other lighting fixtures for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. The standard lamp consists of a lampholder in an enamelled brass pipe, the dimensions and construction of which are reminiscent of his ceiling lamp in the council chamber of Roedovre. A tilting mechanism has been installed in the pipe. The angles of the conic metal shade are made so it flush with the lampholder at the top, at least that was the intention, but in reality it is raised a little as an optical correction. When the lamp is tilted downwards, the edge is horizontal. The inside of the shade is mat white enamel. The screening is effective, you cannot look up into the light source. hivemodern.com
Design Christian Dell, 1931. Steel & brass. Made in Denmark by Fritz Hansen. The Kaiser idell™ collection is available in different versions: Table, wall, floor lamps and pendants. Kaiser idell is an original Bauhaus design. The series is based on a world-patented swivel joint and the characteristic dome embossed with "ORIGINAL KAISER-idell". Beginning in 1926 Dell sketched lights, often for the lamp factory Gebr. Kaiser & Co. The first catalogue was launched in 1936 in which the table lamp model 6631 Luxus appeared for the first time. This lamp soon became the undisputed top model of the KAISER idell™ series - then, as well as today, the symbol of noble Germanic design, exquisite choice of materials and precise engineering. Christian Dell was a German silversmith and designer. From 1922-25 he worked as foreman of the metal workshop at the Bauhaus in Weimar where he was the man behind a highly innovative and pioneering style of design. The Bauhaus occupies a place of its own in the history of the 20th century culture; architecture, design, art and new media. As one of the first colleges of design, it brought together a number of the most outstanding contemporary architects and artists. The lamps are made in steel and brass and the lampshades are hand painted in high gloss. The chrome-plated lamp elements consist of hand polished and silver-soldered brass. The term "iddll" is a reference to the word idea and his lastname, Dell. "Kaiser" is a reference to the original manufacturer - KAISER idell. Design Neri&Hu, 2009. Bamboo rattan cage, aluminum, glass, steel. Made in The Netherlands by Moooi. This oversized light was inspired by a made-believe folklore story of an Asian emperor & a beautiful nightingale…Once upon a time an Asian emperor was given a nightingale as a gift. The bird was so beautiful and sang in such a bewitching way that the emperor fell immediately in love with it and decided to keep it forever by his side. So the nightingale was put in a beautiful, majestic cage in the imperial chambers & became the delight of the emperor's days…Neri & Hu took on a modern translation of this story and produced a collection of pendant/floor/table lamps in stained woven bamboo. The poetics of an emperor's life, a life no longer relevant in today's world, can be abstracted in the form of an object such as the light. The use of hand-crafted bamboo weaving in an industrial product creates an elegant yet uncanny design statement. A lamp so particular & majestic that it could become your personal nightingale…forever by your side to brighten up your days. The Emperor collection includes suspension, floor and table lamps. They are offered with a glass diffuser that creates a very warm glow of light. Each cage is woven by hand and therefore has a unique character. In-line floor dimmer included. 70.9" h | shade: 20.9" dia. | requires 1x60W G9 halogen bulb. Not UL listed, though suitable for US/CA market.
