  • 1950s German Art Deco Cigarette Poster
    chairish.com
1950s German Art Deco Cigarette Poster
Date: 1950s Size: 46.5 x 66 inches Notes: Poster, linen backed, two sheets Artist: George Him About The Poster: Cigarette companies have always been able to afford to spend a great deal of money on advertising their products. As far back as the 1920s when women were smoking as much (or more!) than men - companies like the now defunct Overstolz company used posters as a means to increase brand awareness. Overstolz is a cigarette brand of the former Cologne cigarette company house Neuerburg, named after the old Cologny patrician family of Overstolzes. In the 1960s, German actor Heinz Engelmann became the face of the cigarette brand, starring in newspaper and television advertisements for them. The filter cigarettes were last produced in 2014 and since May 2015 are no longer available. Using a bright white background, this is a rare two-sheet, mid-century modern poster which is both decorative and quirky. We love it! This is an original, vintage poster from the 1950s in excellent condition and was recently mounted on linen. About the artist: George Him was the son of a Russian-Jewish (then Russia) born family with Polish roots in Lodz, Poland with the surname "Himmelfarb". He attended school in Warsaw and studied from 1917 to 1918 Roman Law at the State University in Moscow and comparative history of religions from 1920 to 1924 in Berlin and Bonn. Soon after, he began working as a graphic designer. During the Second World War, he designed posters for the British Ministry of Information, and also made illustrations for children's books and murals for commercial kitchens and canteens in factories.

Campari Soda is packaged in a distinctive bottle that was designed by Fortunato Depero in 1932." This is the design showcased by Mingozzi in this 1950s Art Deco poster. It is in great condition, and would look amazing in any kitchen, restaurant, or even children's room!

    chairish.com
1949 French Art Deco Poster Salon D'Aviation Colin
1949 Original French Art Deco Poster, Salon D'Aviation - Colin According to Wikipedia, Paul Colin (27 June 1892 in Nancy, France - 18 June 1985 in Nogent-sur-Marne) was one of France’s greatest poster artists. Made famous in 1925 by his poster for the Revue Nègre, which helped to launch the career of Joséphine Baker (who became his mistress), he worked for over forty years in the theatre, creating not only posters but also numerous sets and costumes. Very Art déco at the outset, his style quickly became highly personal and impossible to categorize: the synthetic accuracy of his portraits, the evocative force of his posters for grand causes so marked him as a master of visual communication that his work today remains relevant and fresh. A student of Eugène Vallin and of Victor Prouvé, he is considered a master of the modern school of poster art. He is the author of over 1400 posters and many theatrical set and costume designs.' While this short description does much to highlight some of Colin's style, it doesn't quite do him justice - he epitomized the very best of Deco design: there was nothing superfluous in his posters, nothing extra, and yet every detail was present. That kind of craftsmanship is highly evident in this aviation poster as well. 'Three years after his excellent design for the 1946 event, Colin conceived another brilliant work for the 18th Parisian International Air Show. Once again emphasizing the worldwide nature of the fly-in, he places a jet repeatedly circling the golden globe through a break in the clouds. Another fine example of uncluttered simplicity.

1920s Original Delval Art Deco French Liquor Poster Professionally Framed
A 1920s original Art Deco French liquor poster, professionally framed. This is an original lithographic poster by Delval. Size 54" x 71". Poster size 157 x 117 cm (62 x 46 in). Gallery Michael certificate included. This is a very large, colorful 1920s French poster. Advertisement was for a Pastis aperitif called Fap Anis. The creation of Pastis was a response to the banning of its infamous, anis-flavored cousin, absinth in France in 1915. The flapper enjoying a panoramic vista of the French Riviera has an equally intriguing tale. The woman is Gaby Deslys originating from Marseille (short for "Gabrielle of the Lilies"), a dancer, singer, and actress who achieved fame on two continents. During the 1910s she was exceedingly popular worldwide performing in Paris, London, New York, among others, and making $4,000 a week in the United States alone. During the 1910s she performed several times on Broadway. Her dancing was so popular that The Gaby Glide was named for her. Renowned for her beauty she was courted by several wealthy gentlemen including King Manuel II of Portugal, who was said to have given her a pearl necklace worth $70,000 (valued at more than 10 times that amount today). Gaby loved pearls and claimed before she died in 1920 that she owned a collection of them equal to her own weight. Local to Marseille, the home of Pastis and where Fap Anis was produced, Deslys made a perfect fit. This is a beautiful piece that will add to your decor!

Original French Art Deco Period Poster by Paul Colin 1928
This is an original French Art Deco Period advertising poster 'Marguerite Valmond' by Paul Colin printed by H. Chachoin. Made famous in 1928, spectacular and exquisitely made. This large colored lithograph features a detailed, chanteuse in a wistful mood. Among the most elusive of Colin's portraits of performers, this is also one of his best-a sensitive study. The poster was run off with the name misspelled "Valmont"; instead of reprinting it, Chachoin ran off a quantity of "D"s and pasted them on. The color is slightly mismatched-the interest value only enhanced. Here, the poster is offered with "D,". This is a magnificent large, French Art Deco period poster by the artist Paul Colin who worked for over forty years in the theatre, creating not only posters but also numerous sets and costumes. Creator: Paul Colin (Artist) Of the Period: Art Deco Place of origin: France Date of Manufacture: 1928 Period: Early 20th Century Condition: Excellent. This is a lithograph in color printed on paper professional framed. It is very good condition as seen in the detail images. Wear: Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Measurements: Framed 67" tall X 50" Wide x 1" deep unframed 62 1/2" tall x 46. 1/2" wide Artist Biography Paul Colin was one of France’s greatest poster artists, best known for creating over 1,400 posters for the Revue Nègre, as well as numerous sets and costumes. A student of Eugène Vallin and of Victor Prouvé, he is considered a master of the modern school of poster art. His style is highly personal and impossible to categorize. The evocative force of his posters for grand causes marks him as a master of visual communication and his work remains relevant and fresh today. Paul Colin was born in 1892 in Nancy, France. As a teenager, Paul Colin apprenticed at a printing house before enrolling at L’École des Beaux-Arts, and he would later work in the company of Eugène Vallin. He was commended for his masterful integration of organic and figural subjects with geometric forms. His style, which was influenced by both Cubism and Surrealism, frequently employed bold shapes, striking colours, caricature, and highly stylised forms. When still an aspiring artist, Paul Colin was commissioned by a friend at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees to design a poster publicizing La Revue Nègre, starring Josephine Baker. Josephine Baker accepted Colin's invitation to come to his studio to pose for the poster. Paul Colin and Josephine Baker became lovers and life-long friends. Their relationship was fortuitous for both, leading to a very successful artistic career for Colin, and introducing Baker through Colin to Paris' artistic elite. Colin also designed some film sets in the 1930s, including for Fritz Lang's Carnet le Bal (1937). Paul Colin died in 1985 in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

1925 German Art Deco Poster, Athlete - Hohlwein
Born in Munich, Germany in July, 1871, he started his professional career as an architect, but in 1895, induced by his love of color and the desire to produce colorful posters, he deserted his profession to begin a new career as a poster designer. Immediately, he established an enviable reputation and was soon recognized as the leader of his field. He has retained this distinction and today is considered not only the foremost poster designer in Germany, but one of the best in the world. During the long period of activity in which he produced many hundreds of posters, he has hardly ever failed to produce a thing of beauty and charm. His compositions are always striking and original, his colour harmonies unusual and superb, and his technique at once recognizable and inimitable. Undoubtedly, many of his productions bear the distinctive mark of an architect, while others are endowed with the qualities of mural decor, while still others denote the frequency with which he has been influenced by Japanese prints. Throughout his entire career as poster artist, he successfully maintained a high standard of excellence in his work. His versatility seems unbounded. One need only glance through the present collection of his works to realize and appreciate the remarkable and charming qualities of the modern decorative poster designer, Ludwig Hohlwein.

1923 Horizontal Art Deco US Travel Poster
Date: 1924 Size: 35.5 x 55 inches Notes: Poster, Linen Backed Artist: Lee, Robert E. About the Poster: Printed by Carey & Sons, December 1924 in the United States. The history of rail travel - in the United States and elsewhere - is filled with tales of romance and adventure. This poster, printed at the very beginning of the Art Deco period, is unusual for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is its horizontality, its typography (which seems to have been hand-drawn) and the magnificent coloration of its subjects and its broad expanses. An exceptional poster, not seen previously, mounted on linen, and in very good condition. General information on the history of the American Railway System and American Railway Express : The first railway express agency in the United States is generally considered to have been started by William Harriden, who in 1839 began regular trips between New York City and Boston, Massachusetts as a courier transporting small parcels, currency and other valuables... The express business flourished in the latter half of the 19th century, and by 1900 there were four principal railway express companies: Adams Express Company, Southern Express Company, American Express Company, and Wells Fargo. In 1913 the U.S. Post Office introduced its Parcel Service service, which offered major competition for the express companies. Despite this, private railway express business increased steadily through the end of World War I. During World War I, the United States Railway Administration took over the nation's railroads. Under the USRA, the four major and three minor express companies were consolidated as American Railway Express, Inc., save the portion of Southern Express that operated over the Southern Railway and the Mobile & Ohio (Wikipedia).

1920s French Art Deco Poster - Galeries Lafayette
A.M. Cassandre was a painter, commercial poster artist, typeface designer, and stage designer. Born in 1901 in Charkov, Ukraine, Cassandre went to Paris in 1915, studying painting at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian. For a while he worked as a student at the Hachard & Co. press. In the 1920s A.M. Cassandre belonged to avant-garde circles and had many well-known friends in artistic, musical and social circles. A.M. Cassandre earned a reputation as the designer of bold, stringently geometric posters in the Art déco style. A.M. Cassandre received his first commission for a large poster from the Paris furniture store Au Bûcheron in 1923. He designed hundreds of posters - many of them, like this one, classics in the language of Art Deco design and decor. A.M. Cassandre designed posters in a stringently Constructive formal language that pays obvious tribute to the power of the machine and shows influences of Cubism and other Art Deco artists who were working in Paris at the time. Cassandre also developed typefaces and taught at the École des Arts Décoratifs. He had his own art school until 1935. Between 1936 and 1939 A.M.Cassandre lived in in New York, where he freelanced as a commercial artist. In 1939 A.M. Cassandre returned to Paris, where he continued to work as a graphic designer, designed stage sets, and again turned to painting. In 1963 A.M. Cassandre designed the Yves Saint Laurent monogram. Cassandre's private life was hectic and often unhappy - often married, he had unsuccessfully attempted suicide before his final, successful attempt in 1968. This classic poster, measuring approx. 9 x 12 inches, illustrates the style for which Cassandre is best known - clean, precise and never using more detail than is necessary. Produced for the Galeries Lafayettes in Paris, it integrates Cassandre's style with photo montage to inimitable result.

Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries.Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed 'M. Montaut', she also used the name 'Gamy', an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labor intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring. This poster is labeled: "The Dedalia Car, first prize winner at the 1913 ACF Grand Prix for Cycle Cars." It's in excellent condition.

Born in 1901 in Charkov, Ukraine, Cassandre went to Paris in 1915, studying painting at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Julian. For a whole he worked as a student at the Hachard & Co. press. In the 1920s A.M. Cassandre belonged to avant-garde circles and had many well-known friends in artistic, musical and social circles. A.M. Cassandre earned a reputation as the designer of bold, stringently geometric posters in the Art deco style. A.M. Cassandre received his first commission for a large poster from the Paris furniture store Au Bucheron in 1923. He designed hundreds of posters - many of them, like this one, classics in the language of Art Deco design and decor. Cassandre designed posters in a stringently constructive formal language that pays obvious tribute to the power of the machine and shows influences of Cubism and other Art Deco artists who were working in Paris at the time. Cassandre also developed typefaces and taught at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs. He had his own art school until 1935. Between 1936 and 1939 Cassandre lived in New York, where he freelanced as a commercial artist. In 1939 Cassandre returned to Paris, were he continued to work as a graphic designer. In 1963 Cassandre designed the Yves Saint Laurent monogram. His private life was hectic and often unhappy. He had unsuccessfully attempted suicide before his final successful attempt in 1968. This poster was commissioned by Fortune Magazine and was one of the first commissions produced by Cassandre specifically for the American market. The work illustrates the style for which Cassandre is best known - clean, precise and never using more detail than is necessary.

Date: 2012 Size: 16 x 21 Notes: Poster, unlined, Hand-Signed Artist: Thomas, Steve We found Steve Thomas in cyberspace - a place he evidently knows very well - and loved his posters so much that we asked him if we could sell them, and, voila! Steve's bio: "Born and raised in southern Ontario, I went to school in the U.S. and started working in graphics at a newspaper in Pittsburgh. I met my wife there (a fellow Canadian) and moved to the Twin Cities of Minnesota. I worked for another newspaper there creating graphics and illustration before moving to the online publication. I've been lucky enough since then to strike out on my own as a freelance illustrator. I'm constantly trying to come up with new and interesting ideas for illustrations. My love for vintage poster, propaganda and product art from the early 20th century and an interest in retro-futuristic art from the mid-20th has led me to create some cool (I think) poster art. I mean, who doesn't want to travel the solar system or join the fight against the villains of 1980s arcade games?"

    1906 Vintage French Biscotines Poster
Date: 1906 Artist: Leonetto Cappiello Large linen backed poster. About The Poster: This poster for Union biscuits (a two-times winner at the 1905 and 1906 World Fairs!) was designed by Leonetto Cappiello in 1906. Union bakery was founded in 1892 in an effort to combat the terrible living conditions of the working class, offering bread at a competitive price (free to members or even the poorest). It remained under the Union name until 1993, when it was bought out by Leroux. About the Artist: Cappiello is considered to be one of the greatest posterists of his age. Cappiello's approach was always image association - the idea that you don't really remember the image of the product itself, but the image of something is associated with the product ... Cappiello was the first who thoroughly understood this, and he applied it with considerable diligence in about a thousand posters.'(Rennert) Born and raised in Livorno, Italy, Cappiello knew at a young age that he would be an artist. In his youth, Cappiello drew caricatures and sketches, which proved he had a natural talent and an ambition that would eventually lead him to Paris in pursuit of his dream. Encouraged by his brother who was living in Paris at the time, Cappiello endeavored to sell his caricatures to magazines that would pay and support his art. He was so ambitious that he even approached Giacomo Puccini, the composer to ask if he could sketch him. He was successful and managed to submit the images to Le Rire magazine. Soon after, Cappiello became a sought after cartoonist and caricaturist. His style, simple lines with strong colors and an equally strong product message was evident in some of the first commissions he received: an 1899 album of pochoirs depicting famous actresses of the age shows clearly that even as a young man Cappiello had already developed a style which he would use, with incredible results, throughout his creative life. Cappiello's portraits and posters were playful and unique, a quality that bred his success. His illustrations were clean and simple, crossing the boundaries from Belle Epoque through to Art Noveau to the more modernist approach of Art Deco while still combining styles from previous eras. Because of the simplicity of his graphics, Cappiello was able to produce nearly 1000 posters in his time and was an inspiration to many lithographers to follow. His work is sought after today and may be found in galleries and museums throughout the world. 'In Cappiello's later years, caricature, now more polished and refined, makes an appearance every now and again.

Seller says" About The Poster: Call us twisted - and you wouldn't be the first! - but any alcohol which is advertised as one of the choices of athletes makes us giggle. (Lillet aperitif is, according to Wikipedia: a brand of French aperitif wine. It is a blend of 85% wine and citrus liqueurs made from a variety of oranges. Lillet is matured in oak casks and available in red and white versions. While it has been produced since the late 1800s, the current formulation dates from 1987 (1990 for Red Lillet) and is relatively less bitter and sugary, and more fruit flavoured, than the historical one. We love the depth of color, the texture and oomph of this poster - powerful and very, very Art Deco. Andre Galland produced a variety of posters for Lillet, each featuring smiling and virile athletes. Measuring 23.5 x 31 inches, this poster is in excellent condition - the colors of this poster pop and we feel it will look wonderful framed."

1936 Dutch Art Deco Poster - Sterk Door Werk
The translation for this impressive Dutch poster ('strengthened through work') gives the viewer no doubt of the message: a labourer is carting a heavy burden, the smokestacks of industry are billowing and it is through hard work that progress will be made. The poster is highly stylized in the art deco manner which uses strongly symmetrical geometric forms and designs and strong clear colors. ARTIST : Jean Walter (possibly Jean Walter Nieuwenhys - Belgian 1900-1980).

Condition: Excellent Style: Art Deco Description Date: 1923 Size: 9.5 x 12 inches Notes: Poster, Small, Lithograph Artist: Cosl Frey The seller says: I fell in love with Julius Klinger when I first found a portfolio of his works at auction in New York a few years ago. His purity of design is unequaled, and his outlook on life, posters, and poster design is something that I relate(d) to instantly. This work is quite different from his later output which was cleaner and more market-driven. Taken from Klinger's Magnum Opus Poster Art in Vienna, printed in 1923 and created by two of Klinger's students Cosl Frey.

Date: New Artist: Breslaw, Fern About The Poster: While I am generally stuck in the Belle Epoque and Art Deco periods, every once in a I am brought back to modern day reality - the car needs to go to the garage, my son needs something for school, the dog needs to go to the vet. And it was at the vet that I saw these posters first: very simply printed on newsprint (just like the old posters of the 1880s!), with a clear message, eye-catching graphics, a clean design, and WOW, no way I could pass them up. Add to that the fact that they were for a worthy cause, and I was hooked. Started by a young woman in Montreal, the underdog club (underdog.club.org) places dogs which are called the old, the ugly and the unpopular (how can you not love that?), and working with rescue organizations in the city and the general Montreal area, finds homes for dogs who can't find homes for themselves. I LOVE THESE POSTERS so much that I bought lots and lots of them... and hope to sell them here. All the money raised goes to help place the hounds, and I can't think of a better reality than that!

1938 Art Deco Maquette by Marcello Dudovich
Collectors of any kind often rely on their instincts - something which tells them that the item they are looking at is special, different, collectible. Educated guesses, inspired purchases, fortuitous circumstance - if we are really lucky, sometimes they pay off. I found this piece in Europe recently: it is an unsigned original poster maquette, done in pastels on canvas. What I first thought: certainly Art Deco, probably Italian, and quite possibly Dudovich. As it turns out, my instincts were right! At the archive devoted entirely to Dudovich works in Milan, there is a definitive collection of posters, paintings and other artworks by the master. It is this very archive which has helped us confirm what we already believed to be true: this maquette is an original Dudovich design for a poster, mostly likely dated between 1938-1945. (They were so excited by the find that they instantly put it on their website!) Bearing a striking resemblance to a poster Dudovich created for an Italian shipping line - Croisieres Italia - this maquette depicts a stylized woman standing resolutely in the wind on a prow of a ship. The vertical linearity of her posture, the strong and aggressive coloration, and the composition of the flag in the background are undeniably related. This piece is executed in pastels on thin, prepared canvas. It is in very good condition with some minor folds and cracking - no repairs, no restoration, and no foxing. The colors pop and the design is as crisp today as it was when produced roughly 80 years ago. It is an exceptional piece! A certificate of authenticity will be provided upon purchase of this piece. The maquette measures 27.5 x 19.5 inches on a piece of canvas measuring roughly 32.75 x 23.5 inches.

  • Pianos Daude Print

    Pianos Daude Print
Huge professionally framed Pianos Daude print. High quality frame and matting and excellent condition of print. Frame is 60"x48" and print is 48"x35" and measures 60" diagonally. Quality of the frame and double matting is worth hundreds of dollars itself. Found these similar items on eBay and they are going for $1500–$2k. This is a print of the original 1924 store location, not the 1975 new location, see details below. History on the Piano Daude print below: Founded in 1924 by Andre Daude, the Pianos Daude Company builds, sells, and teaches piano in Paris to this day. Andre Daude (1897-1979) purchased his very first piano with his stipend from serving in the French army in World War One. When his neighbor offered to purchase it from him, a venture was born. Much like The Ross Art Group's owner Mickey Ross, Andre Daude turned his hobby and passion into a thriving business. Mr. Daude decided in 1924 that he would create a poster, the most popular form of advertising in Paris, to promote the opening of his very first retail location. Employing the popular Art Deco style of the day, Daude drew up the poster himself. He wisely chose a dramatic diagonal birds eye view of a piano player (himself), with a small view of the Arc de Triomphe and side view of his spectacular pianos in the top right of the poster, and all pertinent information added to the bottom. This excellent example of stone lithography is highly sought after for its dramatic composition and scarcity in the marketplace. Moreover, the original we have in our collection features the rare deep red that collectors search for, as opposed to the faded and lighter red that is found more frequently. Pianos Daude was an immediate success in Paris, and thrived in its location. Pianos Daude was such a success, that in 1975 Andre Daude decided to move to a larger location just down the street at 75 Avenue de Wagram. He turned yet again to poster art as a means to advertise the move. This time, the designing of the poster was much more of a simpler process; he simply reused his popular design and switched out the text on the bottom to have the correct address! By 1975 a new, less expensive printing process called offset lithography had been developed and it is in this method that this round of posters was printed. Much more common, but equally eye-catching, this 1975 edition is a wonderfully affordable way to obtain the look and feel of Art Deco poster art.

    1980s Danish Carlsberg Beer Advertisement
This poster is an advertisement for Carlsberg lager, a Danish beer. It shows a man secretly whispering to a waiter. The literal translation of 'Alle Kan Traenge Til en Hoff' is 'Everybody can need a beer'. Knowing this, it makes it even more amusing because we can now understand what the man is asking for. Why should he be bothered by all of these fancy drinks in front of him, all he really wants is a beer! We love this advertisement, and even if it's an 80s poster, we definitely get the Art Deco feel from it. Affordable, it would look great in a dining room or a kitchen. Increasingly hard to find, these hand-colored pochoirs are highly collectible. Belet's works are often done in the lyrical, Art Nouveau style, in a watercolour-fashion. The small printing along the bottom indicates that the sheet was printed in Paris for E. Belet - Modèles et Documents Modernes pour la Porcelaine, la Bijouterie et les Arts appliqués (translating to: Models and modern documents for ceramics, jewelry, and the applied arts). "Emile Belet was an Art Nouveau painter and designer, and is identified on the title page of La Végétation Sous-Marine as a ceramist from the national factory at Sèvres, France’s leading manufacturer of fine ceramics and porcelain. [...] Belet’s stated intention in the introduction to this work was to draw attention to the underappreciated artistic possibilities of seaweed, with its variety of forms and “rich, sometimes dazzling colors.” The sinuous lines and incorporation of naturalistic motifs are typical of Art Nouveau, though other Victorian stylistic influences are also present." - George Glazer archives

It would be hard to find a more classically Deco image than this one which was purchased recently in Europe. Advertising a radio manufacturer called Fornett who evidently had at least three models to offer (at affordable prices and unequaled value), this poster was printed in Strasbourg in the 1940s. We have had this poster lined to protect its investment value and physical integrity. We think it is an impressive and interesting tribute to Deco artistry and would make a great addition to any collection. Radios were perhaps one of the earliest forms of entertainment which permitted masses of people to enjoy entertainment at once—the precursor to television and moving pictures.
