It stars our muse, the brilliant model Valerie Van Der Graaf, who is the ultimate pin-up girl, and is shot by me. I hope you guys enjoy it and are inspired to read the history of the pin up girl, maybe even order a copy of the book I linked here! Can you see which pin up images and artists inspired these shots? XX Model: Valerie Van Der Graaf Photographer: Kimberley Gordon STyling: Kimberley Gordon, Meredith Leyerzaph, Emily Siegel Make up: Carlene K Hair: Tyron Dupre (Check out our gorgeous, new swimwear in here also! Exciting!) ] One of the most iconic images that exude confidence and femininity is none other than the 1950s pin-up girl. The vintage artwork is still used to showcase beautiful women of all shapes and sizes, which embodies the same cheeky and outgoing personality of a Wildfox girl. Wildfox is proud to present our Summer 2013 collection, “Hello Sailor!” Designer Kimberly Gordon drew inspiration from 1950’s culture for the collection stating, “I’ve always been a big fan of pin-up art, it’s so extremely American and the history behind the pin-up girl is so interesting. I grew up collecting cheesecake books, I starred as Sandy in the school production of Grease, I listened to Elvis constantly and memorized every oldie I could get my hands on.” Summer 2013 is all about making girls feel beautiful! U.S.A.-inspired tees and sweaters with fun Americana graphics such as a sequin “U.S.A.” across a tight knit White Label sweater, “I Want You” on our signature Cassidy Tank, and an intarsia knit “Red Cross” on an oversized cardigan. Our endlessly comfortable baggy beach jumpers and gypsy hoodies are adorned with milkshakes, French poodles, and cherries, taking our Wildfox girls right back to a 50’s malt shop! Women posing for pin up paintings Check out this great book all about the pinup girl, here is a little info: "Subverting stereotypical images of women, a new generation of feminist artists is remaking the pin-up, much as Annie Sprinkle, Cindy Sherman, and others did in the 1970s and 1980s. As shocking as contemporary feminist pin-ups are intended to be, perhaps more surprising is that the pin-up has been appropriated by women for their own empowerment since its inception more than a century ago. Pin-Up Grrrls tells the history of the pin-up from its birth, revealing how its development is intimately connected to the history of feminism. Maria Elena Buszek documents the genre’s 150-year history with more than 100 illustrations, many never before published. Beginning with the pin-up’s origins in mid-nineteenth-century carte-de-visite photographs of burlesque performers, Buszek explores how female sex symbols, including Adah Isaacs Menken and Lydia Thompson, fought to exert control over their own images. Buszek analyzes the evolution of the pin-up through the advent of the New Woman, the suffrage movement, fanzine photographs of early film stars, the Varga Girl illustrations that appeared in Esquire during World War II, the early years of Playboy magazine, and the recent revival of the genre in appropriations by third-wave feminist artists. A fascinating combination of art history and cultural history, Pin-Up Grrrls is the story of how women have publicly defined and represented their sexuality since the 1860s."

John Lennon John Winston Ono Lennon, MBE (9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was an English musician and singer-songwriter who rose to worldwide fame as one of the founding members of The Beatles, one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed acts in the history of popular music. Along with fellow Beatle Paul McCartney, he formed one of the most successful songwriting partnerships of the 20th century. Born and raised in Liverpool, Lennon became involved as a teenager in the skiffle craze; his first band, The Quarrymen, evolved into The Beatles in 1960. As the group disintegrated towards the end of the decade, Lennon embarked on a solo career that produced the critically acclaimed albums John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, and iconic songs such as Give Peace a Chance and Imagine. Lennon disengaged himself from the music business in 1975 to devote time to his family, but re-emerged in 1980 with a new album, Double Fantasy. He was murdered by Mark Chapman three weeks after its release. Lennon revealed a rebellious nature and acerbic wit in his music, his writing, his drawings, on film, and in interviews, and he became controversial through his political and peace activism. He moved to New York City in 1971, where his criticism of the Vietnam War resulted in a lengthy attempt by Richard Nixons administration to deport him, while his songs were adopted as anthems by the anti-war movement. As of 2010, Lennons solo album sales in the United States exceed 14 million units, and as writer, co-writer or performer, he is responsible for 27 number-one singles on the US Hot 100 chart. In 2002, a BBC poll on the 100 Greatest Britons voted him eighth, and in 2008, Rolling Stone ranked him the fifth-greatest singer of all-time. He was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987 and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. History 1940–57: Early years Lennon was born in war-time England, on 9 October 1940 at Liverpool Maternity Hospital, to Julia and Alfred Lennon, a merchant seaman who was away at the time of his sons birth. He was named John Winston Lennon after his paternal grandfather, John Jack Lennon, and then-Prime Minister Winston Churchill. His father was often away from home but sent regular pay cheques to 9 Newcastle Road, Liverpool, where Lennon lived with his mother, but the cheques stopped when he went absent without leave in February 1944. When he eventually came home six months later, he offered to look after the family, but Julia—by then pregnant with another mans child—rejected the idea. After her sister, Mimi Smith, twice complained to Liverpools Social Services, Julia handed the care of Lennon over to her. In July 1946, Lennons father visited Smith and took his son to Blackpool, secretly intending to emigrate to New Zealand with him. Julia followed them—with her partner at the time, Bobby Dykins—and after a heated argument his father forced the five-year-old to choose between them. Lennon twice chose his father, but as his mother walked away, he began to cry and followed her. It would be 20 years before he had contact with his father again. Throughout the rest of his childhood and adolescence, he lived with his aunt and uncle, Mimi and George Smith, who had no children of their own, at Mendips, 251 Menlove Avenue, Woolton. His aunt bought him volumes of short stories, and his uncle, a dairyman at his familys farm, bought him a mouth organ and engaged h

  • Antique Book, Homespun Stories Ascott R. Hope 1883 Woodblock Engravings Vintage Boyhood Book, Boy Coming of Age Stories, Art Nouveau Design
This antique book, Homespun Stories, by Ascott R. Hope is an 1883 First Edition. The Art Nouveau boards are effusively and intricately decorated with the image of a photograph with corner mounts bordering it. The photo is of a boy climbing a pole with the outline of a school building in the background, clouds overhead, and the moon on the rise. This portion of the cover shows fine woodblock engraving to create the clouds in relief. The boy and pole are in gilt, which gives them prominence. A large bouquet of leafy, stylized flowers spreads upward from the bottom left corner to spread across the middle up toward the upper right corner. Homespun Stories, is written in a flourishing, gilt script, with the authors name and an encircled nautical anchor in gilt. The cover is a lovely work of art to display. The image of the boy climbing a pole is taken from the frontispiece illustration, entitled At the Masthead, and serves as the chapter illustration for the short story, My Escape. The collection opens with a marvelous essay, Spinning a Story, in which the author contemplates and explains the process and value of storytelling. Published by D. Appleton, NY, each story is a delightful read and is accompanied by its own illustration. Hope was well known in his day for his voluminous output of literature, and especially those that dealt with boyhood and coming-of-age for boys. The volume contains twelve stories, filled with 19th-century lore that provides us a touchstone to Victorian culture and morays. The book measures 7 x 5 x 1 1/4 and contains 346 pages, plus two pages of Appleton Co. publications. This antique volume is in remarkably good condition, as you can see from the photos. The pages show some age toning, but they are not fragile. The pages are free of marks, rips, and tears. Truly, a nice find. Please see my photos and ask questions. I am happy to provide additional views. Thanks for looking

  • Galignani's New Paris Guide for 1851
1851 edition of Galignanis New Paris Guide. There is fascinating detail in this antique book and it is interesting and fun reading. From cafe descriptions: When lighted up at night, the effect, either seen from the exterior or within, is perfectly dazzling. At the outside chairs and small tables are placed, where the company enjoy the cool of the evening, and witness the animated scene passing around them; while in the interior you see yourself reflected by mirrors, remarkable for their size and number; you find yourself bewildered with the blaze of light. .. To prisons: Here the prisoners awaiting trial, the condemned prisoners, and the healthy prostitutes take their meals at different hours. The cantines, where prisoners may buy any humble dainties they may fancy, furnishes part of the prison revenue. The diet consists of half a litre of broth, with two-fifths or pulse or vegetables. .. There is a removable foldout map of Paris still tucked in the pocket at the back cover (shown in last image). Inside are small foldout plans of the Cemetery of Père la Chaise and Versailles (Versailles plan ripped and very worn). Volume has some plate/engraving illustrations, and there are a few advertising pages at back as well. Measurements: 4 x 6 ½. Hardcover. Overall condition is rough, with page discoloration, stains/foxing, some handwritten notations here and there. Covers show wear/erosion as indicated in the photos. That said, binding is secure and volume can be comfortably handled and read. Given the age and presumed usage I dont find the wear unexpected. Good to have the foldout Paris map; though worn (mainly at the creases), it would still be nice to have framed and displayed. Free shipping via USPS Media Mail to USA destinations.
