  • Josef Hoffmann Hoffmann Armchair
    dwr.com
Josef Hoffmann is well known for the simple, restrained, yet visually interesting dining chairs – several intended for cafés – that he designed early in the 20th century. The influence of the Arts and Crafts movement can be seen in his work, but Hoffmann also embraced the industrial age. Rather than rejecting traditional decoration, he succeeded in making it serve structural principles, which he believed should determine the forms of buildings, interiors and objects. Whether admiring one of his chairs or the Sanatorium Purkersdorf he designed in 1903, you can see Hoffmann’s emphasis on straight, unadorned lines, characteristics that are in keeping with the style of the Viennese Secession. The Hoffmann Armchair (1925), designed in collaboration with Josef Frank, is made at the bentwood factory founded by Michael Thonet in 1861. Made in the Czech Republic.

  • Design House Stockholm Bjork Pouf/Stool
    shophorne.com
The Bjork series and its patterned structure offer a modern and enriched textile quality that is beautifully paired with stylish leather detailing. The designer, Lena Bergstrom's, conviction is that the flat textile surface of a rug is just as natural in the home as stone and wood: "The [pouf] is a natural part of the Björk collection, just like the stumps in a birch forest. They are a piece of furniture that is light and soft in its expression." For the Bjork pouf, Lena has drawn inspiration from the rough black and white graphical structure of the birch tree's trunk. The color tones of Bjork create a marbled effect through a warp of cotton intertwined with a weft in wool, known not only for its softness, but also for its in-built resistance to dirt.
  • Mater Mango Wood Bowl Table - Extra Large
    shophorne.com
An adaptation of traditional wooden lacquer trays, this table is multifunctional and comes in a knock down form. The legs easily detach to help reduce the energy spent on transporting material from various parts of the world, and to allow the table to be used as a bowl, tray or table. The idea is inspired by objects that are simple and had multiple applications, and yet were not burdens on the planet. The shape of the mango table is derived from traditional kneading bowls that used to be lacquered in bright red, and were found extensively across south of India. The mango table has a top made from the wood of a fruit tree. It is grown and tended for, and once the productive life of the tree is over, it is cut down and another one is planted. Incidentally, mango, as a fruit is widely consumed across the country hence the wood is plentiful. It is turned manually on the lathe, showcasing the skill of the `kharaadi' or the wood turning community, thereby supporting local skills. The legs are made of mild steel, machined out of rods. The finishing is done with lead free water based PU lacquers, thereby respecting the local environment.

“Furniture that is too obviously designed,” said Milo Baughman, “is very interesting, but too often belongs only in museums.” While we could certainly see his Drum Table (1970s) in a museum, it would earn its place there for its simplicity and lack of unnecessary ornamentation. Distilling the idea of an occasional table to its simplest form, Baughman’s cylindrical design draws you in with its smoothness and warmth. It features seams that are painstakingly welded, ground and polished by hand until they blend in as much as possible. Once constructed, Drum is coated with bronze, oxidized and hand-relieved to give it a unique patina, eschewing the sterility of machine-made pieces. It includes leveling floor glides to compensate for uneven surfaces. Made in U.S.A.

This Daybed (2004) was designed “to be seen in the round,” says Craig Bassam, by which he means that it can be seen and used from all sides. Such an approach isn’t surprising from a design team living in a glass house where furniture is visible from every angle, whether you’re standing inside or out. The house is the work of Philip Johnson, the architect who designed the Glass House for his own private residence in New Canaan, Connecticut. To see how seamlessly this Daybed (and all the furniture BassamFellows has created) works in a space designed by the iconic Johnson, makes it very clear that these are the next icons – destined to become highly collectible. Bassam is an architect whose career started with Bruce Eeles, a disciple of Marcel Breuer. His partner, Scott Fellows is a Harvard MBA who transformed the Swiss firm Bally. Together they are BassamFellows, described as “the design world’s A-team” by The Times of London. This fully handcrafted Daybed is made of solid American black walnut that is sustainably and locally harvested. The leather cushions are hand stitched with inverted seams; the backrest adjusts to three positions. Made in U.S.A.
