Alices Evidence Alices Adventures in Wonderland (1865) - originally published as Alices Adventures Under Ground. The story centers on the seven-year-old Alice, who falls asleep in a meadow, and dreams that she plunges down a rabbit hole. She finds herself first too large and then too small. She meets such strange characters as Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and the King and Queen of Hearts, and experiences wondrous, often bizarre adventures, trying to reason in numerous discussions that do not follow the daylight logic. Finally she loses her temper, bringing down this dream world and wakes up. Alices Adventures in Wonderland is a work of childrens literature by the British mathematician and author Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells the story of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit-hole into a fantasy realm populated by talking creatures and anthropomorphic playing cards. The tale is fraught with satirical allusions to Dodgsons friends and to the lessons that British schoolchildren were expected to memorize. The Wonderland described in the tale plays with logic in ways that has made the story of lasting popularity with children as well as grown-ups. Alice was a publishing sensation, beloved by children and adults alike, and it has never been out of print since. Alices Adventures in Wonderland has been translated into over 50 languages, including Esperanto. There have now been over a hundred editions of the book, as well as countless adaptations in other media, especially theater and film. THROUGH the LOOKING GLASS When Dodgson was in London, he met a little girl, Alice Raikes. He invited her indoors, put an orange in her right hand and asked her in which hand she was holding it. Then, he put her in front of a mirror, and asked which hand the child in the mirror was holding the orange in. Alice told him that it was in her left hand. When he asked her for an explanation, she answered: Supposing I was on the other side of the glass, wouldnt the orange still be in my right hand? He was delighted with her answer and decided that his new book would be about the world on the other side of the looking glass. (source: Graham, E., Lewis Carroll and the writing of Through the Looking Glass, as an introduction in a Penguin edition of the stories) Dodgson wanted to secure an illustrator well before the text was complete. John Tenniel was willing, but engaged with other projects. Dodgson approached Sir Joseph Noel Paton, but he was ill. Then he wrote to Tenniel, offering to buy his time from his publishers; Tenniel agreed to illustrate the book in his spare time. The working title of Alices new adventures was Looking-Glass House. It evolved to Behind the Looking-Glass, but eventually Henry Liddon suggested Through the Looking-Glass and the subtitle And What Alice Found There was added. (source: Stoffell, S.
