  • Artek Kiki Lounge Chair
    hivemodern.com
Design Ilmari Tapiovaara, 1960. Lacquered steel frame, PU foam & dacron, upholstery. Made in Finland by Artek. Tapiovaara wanted to design inexpensive furniture for a broader audience. He made use of materials that were readily available in Finland in the 1940s, such as solid birch. Later in the 1950s, he began to develop multipurpose chairs made of steel tubing and plywood. Ilmari Tapiovaara designed Kiki in 1960. It was originally conceived as a chair whose stackability allowed it to be used to seat large groups, such as in auditoriums. In the Kiki series Tapiovaara employed a more clean cut design idiom instead of the more organic style he had favored previously. Instead of wood, he chose oval steel tubing as the structural and unifying element of the whole Kiki collection. Kiki was a success, establishing the current direction for furniture design at this time. Kiki's timeless and elegant design idiom has made it one of the most popular pieces of public furniture in Finland. llmari Tapiovaara was one of the greatest interior architects and designers of his era. With the mind of an explorer and a soul of a craftsman, Tapiovaara was always seeking for new solutions to improve everyday objects. During his long career Tapiovaara created dozens of iconic objects loved by the public. He was revered as a master of characteristic and human objects and surroundings who captured the essence of Finnish identity. Ilmari Tapiovaara was awarded a total of six gold medals at the Milan Triennials as well as many other important awards throughout his career. 23.6" w | 29.5" d | 26.7" h | seat: 15.4" h.

  • Herman Miller® Eames Molded Lounge Chair Lcm
    hivemodern.com
Design Charles & Ray Eames®, 1946. Molded plywood, metal or wood legs. Made by Herman Miller® "Who would say that pleasure is not useful?" -Charles Eames. Designers Charles and Ray Eames established their long and legendary relationship with Herman Miller in 1946 with the boldly original molded plywood dining and lounge chairs. Designed to comfortably fit the body, the sculpted form of the molded plywood chairs are produced using thin sheets of lightweight veneer gently molded into curved shapes with natural rubber shock mounts to absorb movement. Since then, the chairs' aesthetic integrity, enduring charm, and comfort have earned it recognition as the best of modern design. Available in either a lounge or dining versions with chrome-plated steel or wood legs. In the early 1940s, Charles and Ray Eames experimented with wood-molding techniques that would have profound effects on the design world. Their discoveries led to a commission from the U.S. Navy in 1942 to develop plywood splints, stretchers, and glider shells molded under heat and pressure. After World War II, they adapted the technology to create high-quality chairs that could be mass-produced. The process eliminated extraneous wood, which reduced the weight and visual profile of the chair and established a basis for modern furniture design. A truly comfortable chair that's suitable for businesses and homes. The chair is in the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art. Time magazine named it the Best Design of the 20th Century. With a grand sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned their curiosity and boundless enthusiasm into creations that established them as a truly great husband-and-wife design team. Their unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Playful and functional. Sleek, sophisticated, and beautifully simple. That was and is the "Eames look." The chairs are offered in your choice of santos palisander, natural cherry, walnut, white ash or two colors which allow the wood's natural characteristics to show through. Santos palisander is a lustrous veneer that has the same characteristics as the original rosewood, color and grain. 22" w | 24.25" d | 26.5" h | seat: 15.5" h.

  • Crate & Barrel Clybourn Credenza
    crateandbarrel.com
Mid-century meets this century in an executive, statement desk rich in lustrous walnut and brushed stainless steel. Handcrafted by a small woodworking company in Wisconsin, Clybourn is solid and substantial, yet looks light and lithe considering its scale and materials. A thick, solid American walnut top floats above and beyond on four brushed stainless steel supports—a signature design element with a functional bonus of storage for a keyboard or laptop on an integrated slide-out shelf. Striking symmetry suspends walnut veneered cases with mitered corners—two storage drawers stack opposite one legal-letter file with brushed aluminum pulls. Squared stainless steel sled legs appear to "continue" under the floating desktop. Striking from all angles, a finished back serves as a modesty panel and allows the piece to work mid-room in true executive fashion. Enamored with American walnut, only a dark Danish oil finish and a low-sheen satin wax topcoat are used to bring out the wood's inherent beauty. Solid American walnut, walnut veneer, low-emission engineered wood. Dark Danish oil finish, 10% sheen satin wax topcoat. Stainless steel sled legs and desktop supports. Slide-out laptop/keyboard shelf. Filing drawer for legal/letter files. Extension ball-bearing drawer glides. Brushed aluminum hardware. Cord management cutout. Made in USA.

    2modern.com
The Domus Oak Leather Lounge Chair by Ilmari Tapiovara is an elegant design classic in the tradition of Finnish furniture design. In addition to dozens of chairs and other furniture, mostly intended for public spaces, Tapiovaara also designed interiors for many banks, offices, hotels and showrooms starting in the 1940s. With the mind of an explorer and a soul of a craftsman, Tapiovaara was always seeking new solutions to improve everyday objects. During his long career Tapiovaara created dozens of iconic objects loved by the public. Features: Designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara, 1946. Made in Finland.
