“Hola Ivy!” I heard a somewhat familiar voice say as I picked up my phone.

“Umm, hello,” I said cautiously, “I’m sorry, but who is this?”

“It’s Isabella!” the voice giggled. Isabella- Isabella! Oh that’s right! The girl from that party Francisco took me to.

“Oh hey, Isabella. How are you?” I asked flipping through a magazine.

“Great dear! How about you go out for some drinks with me tonight?” she asked.

I hesitated a moment something inside me tugged at me not to go, but I needed to make new friends. “Alright,” I said unenthusiastically.

“Lovely dear,” Isabella exclaimed, “Pick you up at 11!” I hear the click of the phone and then the dial tone. I couldn’t back out now.

I was rushing around making sure I was properly prepared for the evening when there was a knock at my door. I hurried over to answer it with one heel on my foot and the other in my hand. I swung open one of the French doors to find Francisco standing there in jeans and a t-shirt. I hadn’t seen or spoken to him since Mr. Santiago’s party over a week ago.

“Francisco!” I said surprised, “What’s up?”

“Can I come in?” he asked.

“Oh yes of course!” I said moving aside, “So what is it?” I asked placing my other heel on my foot.

“I just wanted to come by and check up on you. I haven’t talked to you since that incident with my mother,” he said watching me run around.

“Oh don’t worry about it,” I said putting my earrings in, “I’m over it.”

He nodded and then said, “Be careful tonight.”

I stopped what I was doing and looked at Francisco. “What do you mean?”

“I know you’re going out with Isabella,” he said.

“Oh that,” I said, “Don’t worry, it’ll be fine. She just called and I figured I need to be more consistant with friendships so I’m gonna give it a shot.”

Francisco shook his head and said, “I don’t think it’s a good idea.”

“Excuse me,” I said getting defensive, “I know how to take care of myself. I’m not a little girl.”

“True, true,” he said nodding his head, “But I know Isabella better than you.”

I looked down at my phone; Isabella just texted me that she had arrived. “Look,” I said grabbing my jacket, “I really appreciate it, Francisco, but I’ve gotta go! I’ll talk to you soon.”

Isabella took me to a different club than the first time and this time we had our own special room. Various people who I assumed were Isabella’s friends came in and out all night. To be quite honest I sat back all night with one drink and observed most of the night. That is until Isabella turned to me, a little buzzed, and slurred her Catalan. I was getting better at speaking it, but I didn’t understand drunken Catalan.

“I- I’m sorry,” I said leaning forward.

“Oh that’s right!” Isabella yelled to one of her friends, “Her Catalan is awful!” I rolled my eyes and sat back. At that moment I regretted not listening to Francisco. Isabella enjoyed partying and drinking way too much for one person. Before I knew it Isabella had made her way over to me. “So, you’re not with Francisco right?” she asked with alcohol seeping off her breath.

“No,” I said plainly.

“Then do you mind if I go after him? I mean he’s just so divine!” she giggled, but she was serious. Something inside me snapped. I sat up straight and moved farther away from her, but she didn’t notice.

I shrugged and said, “Fine.” She laughed and threw her head back and then she was off. Yeah, I definitely regretted not listening to Francisco.
