  • Teca mini - Renaissance Cupola and Victorian Grandeur Table Lamp By FLOS
    2modern.com
Bring the Museum Home. The Teca collection by Ron Gilad for Flos represents an historical archive of the abat-jour, taking inspiration from the classic lampshade shapes of significant eras and cultures to create contemporary icons. Teca shades are showcased in museum boxes as a way of celebrating form, function, material and antiquity. Renaissance Cupola : Era | 15th Century, The Cupola takes its cues from the Italian Renaissance, one monument of which was sculptor and architect Filippo Brunelleschi’s magnificently domed Florence cathedral. With this dome, Brunelleschi revived a Hellenistic architectural element that had languished for centuries. Little domes called “cupolas” often capped prominent buildings, offering vast vistas in a literal sense, as well as broader – metaphorical – perspectives. Some, fitted with glass panes and candles or electric lights, illuminated the cities around them and were referred to as “lanterns.” Victorian Grandeur : Era | Mid-19th Century, Designers of the Victorian era exulted in the advent of industrial production and increasingly pliant materials such as rubber and cast iron, resulting in the plush decoration and dark, extravagant clutter that marked even the most utilitarian objects of the midcentury. It is no accident that this voluptuous Victorian shade resembles a corset. The attitude during this period towards sexuality was famously fraught: While prudish Victorians dressed "naked" table legs with skirts, others inaugurated a cheeky cultural conversation about sensuality and eroticism. The Grandeur then, like London’s 1851 Crystal Palace exhibition, evokes the rococo social conventions and lavish breeding of the time. Features. Designed by Ron Gilad, 2009.
