Tapiovaara was a great admirer of Alvar Aalto's work and wanted to create products based on the same ideological premises. He embraced the principle of social equality of functionalism, and felt that architecture was the starting point of his design work. The Domus lounge, alongside the Domus chair, were originally designed by Tapiovaara for the public spaces at the Domus Academica's student housing complex in Helsinki. When first produced, it was not possible to produce the seat and back element from one piece. It wasn't until recently that the Domus lounge is being produced as Tapiovaara originally designed. A classic Scandinavian design, the Domus series consists of lounge, arm and side chairs offered in a variety of finish options as well as upholstered. Llmari Tapiovaara was one of the greatest interior architects and designers of his era. With the mind of an explorer and a soul of a craftsman, Tapiovaara was always seeking for new solutions to improve everyday objects. During his long career Tapiovaara created dozens of iconic objects loved by the public. • Bensen Torii Chair With Upholstered Seat
    hivemodern.com
Design Niels Bendtsen. Ash, oak or walnut, upholstery. Made in Italy by Bensen. Torii is a simple yet subtly sophisticated wood chair, defined by its closely spaced back legs, broad seat, and small arched backrest. Its minimal appearance and simple construction hide a surprising amount of comfort and sturdiness, making it suitable for residential and commercial use. Torii is the Japanese name for the characteristic wood entrance arches to Shinto shrines in Japan, and translates directly into English as "bird perch". This motif perfectly describes the chairs distinct proportions and traditional joinery, and the sense of harmony and calm inherent in design that is beautifully resolved. Torii is constructed using traditional and advanced joinery techniques producing a thin and light yet sufficiently strong chair. It is available in White Oak, Black stained Ash, and Walnut, with leather or fabric upholstered seat. The finish is an advanced low build water-based polyurethane that gives the wood a natural open-grain appearance, which is smooth to the touch and highly durable. Black stained Ash version is also offered with a plywood seat. 19.5" L | 19.25" d | 29.5" h | seat: 17.5" h.

This marriage of form and function results in a lightness of appearance and weight while maintaining rigid strength, durability and longevity. • Vitra - Miniature Favela Chair
    connox.com
The Favela armed chair is one of the most striking works by the Brazilian designers Fernando and Humberto Campana. According to a statement by the brothers, the architecture of the typical shanty towns in their native country was the inspiration for the design and name of this extraordinary item of seating furniture. Like the majority of hut-like dwellings, the favela is also nailed and glued together from oddments and waste materials. The Campanas made use of small, differently-sized strips of wood, as are produced in abundance in every joinery, for their representative chair. In the Favela, they prove that objects of singular elegance and beauty can even originate from apparent mundane, worthless materials. Over and above this, the Favela throws a new light on the dynamic relationship between a one-off design and a mass-produced product. Although every chair is made from the same material and to an identical construction plan, each finished article still retains its individuality in the detail. The original of the Favela Chair was designed by Fernando and Humberto Campana in 1991 and it is produced as 1:1 model by Edra, Pisa/Italy, since 2003. The here offered miniature by Vitra (scale 1:6) consists of natural wood.
