  • Saarinen Knoll Swivel Arm Chair
    hivemodern.com
Design Eero Saarinen, 1957. Five-star steel base, polyurethane shell, upholstery. Made in USA by Knoll. In his groundbreaking collection of 1957, Eero Saarinen transformed executive seating into a fluid, sculptural form. Recognizing the importance of user comfort, Saarinen became the first to construct a chair shell from fiberglass, a pliable material that flexes in response to body weight. The chair is available with and without arms, and features metal or wood legs, or a swivel base. The armless chair with a plastic back, ideal for café applicatons, is a recent reintroduction. Son of the celebrated architect Eliel Saarinen, Eero was classically trained in sculpture and architecture. His collaboration with Charles Eames in 1937 led to the creation of the Organic Armchair, made from plywood and foam rubber, the first three-dimensionally shaped bucket armchair. Saarinen continued to develop this theme in the years that followed with great designs, all for Knoll. Among the many buildings for which he is known are Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C., and the TWA terminal at Kennedy International Airport in New York. Swivel arm chair: 25.25" w |24" d | 31"-36.25" h | seat: 16.5" - 21.75" h.

Design Warren Platner, 1966. Polished nickel steel wire rod, glass, marble, wood. Made in Italy by Knoll. In the 1960s, Warren Platner transformed steel wire into a sculptural furniture collection, creating what is now considered a design icon of the modern era. All metal components are finished in bright nickel with a clear lacquer protective coating. The Platner collection also includes a side chair, lounge chair and stool. The Platner table collection frame features vertical steel wire rods welded to circular horizontal and edge-framing rods. The Base has a clear plastic extrusion ring that creates a smooth bottom surface. • Magis Cyborg Armchair
    hivemodern.com
Design Marcel Wanders, 2011. Air-molded & injection-molded polycarbonate. Made in Italy by Magis. A cyborg is an organism that has both artificial and natural systems. The term was coined in 1960 by Manfred Clynes. In 1965, D.S. Halacy's Evolution of the Superman featured an introduction which spoke of a 'bridge...between mind and matter.' Fictional cyborgs are portrayed as a synthesis of organic and synthetic parts. Often their presence calls into question the difference between humans and machines as concerned with morality, free will, and empathy. The friction we feel between the natural and the artificial world is in fact a misconception; as there is no artificial world, there is only a natural world under the influence of its very own nature. Marcel Wanders grew up in Boxtel, the Netherlands and graduated cum laude from the School of the Arts Arnhem in 1988. His fame started with the iconic Knotted Chair in 1996. He is now designing for the biggest European contemporary design manufacturers including Moooi of which he is also art director and co-owner. He works on architectural, interior design and consumer home appliances. His designs have been selected for the most important design collections and exhibitions around the world. Cyborg is produced using polycarbonate in various leg and back options. It is also offered with a wicker back. 31.5" H | 22.8" w | 21.2" d.

  • Herman Miller® Eames Soft Pad Group Side Chair
    hivemodern.com
Design Charles & Ray Eames®, 1969. Aluminum, upholstery. Made by Herman Miller® "Design is a plan for arranging elements in such a way as best to accomplish a particular purpose." -Charles Eames. An extension of the Aluminum Group chairs designed in 1958 for the Irwin Miller home, the Soft Pad Group repeats the structure of the earlier chairs, adding cushions to the seat and back. Covered in leather or fabric, these cushions transformed the spare character of the Aluminum Group into a luxurious version for homes and offices. The seat-back suspension was a major technical achievement and represented a departure from the concept of the chair as a solid shell. The soft pad group is wonderfully comfortable, strong, yet lightweight. With a grand sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned their curiosity and boundless enthusiasm into creations that established them as a truly great husband-and-wife design team. Their unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Playful and functional. Sleek, sophisticated, and beautifully simple. That was and is the "Eames look." Available in management, side, executive, and lounge models, their classic lines and comfortable suspension keep them in demand for all kinds of places, from contemporary homes to elegant offices to hip startups. The side chair features .5" glides, a low-back with a lightweight aluminum frame and 2"-thick upholstered foam cushions. It has a 4-star base and offered with a fixed or swivel mechanism and a fixed seat height. Armless: 20.5" w| 16.5" d | 33.75" h | seat: 20.75" h. Armchair: 23" w | 16.5" d | 33.75" h | seat: 20.75" h | arms: 27.75" h.
