  • Artifort Orange Slice Chair
    hivemodern.com
Design Pierre Paulin, 1960. Beech shells, upholstery, steel. Made in Holland by Artifort. "A chair should be more than simply functional. It should be friendly, fun and colorful." -Pierre Paulin. Designed in 1960, the Orange Slice is a timeless icon that looks as fresh and inspired today as it did when it was first created. Anyone who sees several Slice chairs together cannot fail to be touched by the playfulness fo the composition. From different visual angles, the Orange Slice shows several stages of 'curl up'. In fact, the chair seems to change shape every time you look at it. Pierre Paulin studied stone carving and clay modeling at the Ecole Camondo in Paris in the early fifties where he began designing furniture for Thonet. In 1958, he became the designer for Artifort where he created a series of sculptural chairs with an inner structure of steel tubing, covered in foam and fabric. In 1968, Paulin collaborated with Le Mobilier National and received many important government commissions including furniture and interiors for the Elysee Palace in Paris. • Vitra Place Sofa 2 Seater W/Chaise
    hivemodern.com
Design Jasper Morrison, 2008. Metal frame, wood structure, polyurethane foam. Made in Germany by Vitra. Place sofa is Jasper Morrison's interpretation of what is now a modern classic sofa type. A low lounge sofa with a decidedly horizontal thrust. With carefully chosen proportions, much comfort and no decorative frills, Place sofa offers the key features in the purest of condensed form. Voluminous, slightly rounded cushions with soft fabric or leather covers invite you to lounge on Place sofa, and the high-grade inner workings ensure enduring comfortable seating. Thanks to its modular structure, the Place sofa's shape can be defined personally and changed at any time. With Place sofa, Jasper Morrison has successfully coupled the typical informal feel of this type of sofa with highly precise finishing and great expressive clarity, and thus renewed the typology firmly in line with his philosophy of supernormal design. Born in London, Jasper Morrison studied design at the Royal College of Art and at the HdK in Berlin. Editor of the Design Year Book in 1999 with a passion for the history of design. Morrison's objects provide a quiet contrast to the creative exuberance of the Eighties. The visual restraint, high functionalism and constructive simplicity attract attention to his work.
