Book Rating: ★★★★★
“I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.”
Yay, book three! You know when you read some books and think, ‘Can't wait for this to be over...’ or ‘God I’ve got a long way to go...’ but then you get so into the book that, before you know it you’ve already finished it! That's how I felt with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
In the third instalment of the series, it is focused on Sirius Black, who has escaped from Azkaban. Harry, Ron and Hermione are in their third year at Hogwarts and they believe that Sirius is one of Voldemort’s allies and wants to kill Harry. The Dementors was ordered by the Ministry of Magic to protect the school from Black. They are foul creatures who can suck the happiness out of people, Harry has problems with the Dementors causing him to feel weak and faint.
The build-up and the pacing of this book was written very well. It was slow to begin with but given time, it picked at the right time and that's when the twists and turns happened. I was reading this intently, especially the part where the trio came face to face with Sirius Black! That scene was ‘TWIST’ written all over it! Learning the history about Harry’s father, along with Black, Lupin and Peter Pettigrew and how they were ale to become animagi was very interesting. Harry thought that it was Black who betrayed his parents but...he finally learns the truth that it was Peter Pettigrew! He was the one who betrayed Harry’s parents and gotten them killed and he was the one who framed Black.
Crookshanks is one intelligent cat! I thought that he was after Scabbers for dinner and I was feeling sorry for Scabbers as well! Scabbers was that scoundrel Peter Pettigrew!
"You don't understand!" whined Pettigrew. "He would have killed me, Sirius!"
"THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE DIED!" roared Black. "DIED RATHER THAN BETRAY YOUR FRIENDS, AS WE WOULD HAVE DONE FOR YOU!”
Out of the three, I felt like this book has definitely been the utmost entertaining read! J.K. Rowling said herself that this book has especially made her writing experience very enjoyable and it took her the shortest time to finish writing it. Harry blowing up his aunt in the opening chapter! She deserved it, as she was so horrible about his mum! Fred and George, god those twins, they are so hilarious with the way they mocked Percy with the way he spoke to Harry.
“Harry!" said Fred, elbowing Percy out of the way and bowing deeply. "Simply splendid to see you, old boy-"
"Marvelous," said George, pushing Fred aside and seizing Harry's hand in turn. "Absolutely spiffing."
"That's enough, now," said Mrs. Weasley.
"Mum!" said Fred as though he'd only just spotted her and seizing her hand too. "How really corking to see you-”
I really enjoyed reading about the Quidditch matches! This was one of the highlights of this book.
“HARRY, THIS IS NO TIME TO BE A GENTLEMAN!" Wood roared as Harry swerved to avoid collision. "KNOCK HER OFF HER BROOM IF YOU HAVE TO!”
Lee Jordan as the commentary. Love this guy. He was so bias, being on Gryffindor’s side, I loved it!
“THIRTY–ZERO! TAKE THAT, YOU DIRTY, CHEATING —” “Jordan, if you can’t commentate in an unbiased way — !” “I’m telling it like it is, Professor!”
“YOU CHEATING SCUM!” Lee Jordan was howling into the megaphone, dancing out of Professor McGonagalls reach. “YOU FILTHY CHEATING B-” Professor McGonagall didn’t even bother to tell him off. She was actually shaking her finger in Malfoy’s direction, her hat had fallen off, and she too was shouting furiously.”
There was a mention of Cho Chang and Cedric Diggory! Cho being the seeker in Ravenclaw and Cedric, the captain and seeker of Hufflepuff, how very convenient... There hasn’t really been a proper introduction to them yet (in the next book!). All I know is Cho is described as extremely pretty and Harry blushed when she said good luck, awe!
I love the scene where Hermione and Harry were able to travel back in time with the time turner necklace and saving Beakbuck and Black, ensuring that they are never seen. It was so funny when Hermione and Harry managed to return just in time, realising Black has escaped again, Snape was saying to Dumbledore “POTTER I KNOW IT WAS HIM!” But how can one person be at two places at once? Oh...if only Snape knew… the slimeball.
There was a touching moment when Sirius and Harry talked and Sirius said maybe he could live with him but he’d understand if Harry didn’t want to...but Harry said are you kidding me? When can I move in?! Then Sirius was saying how much Harry looked like his dad, apart from his green eyes, which were from his mum. Since the Nimbus 2000 got smashed by the tree, the Firebolt broomstick gift from Sirius and how Crookshanks was in on it getting it for him. That's a smart cat Hermione’s got!
The Marauder’s map was so cool and when Harry read the map to Snape, it was so hilarious! This is what it said:
“Mr. Moony presents his compliments to Professor Snape, and begs him to keep his abnormally large nose out of other people's business.
Mr. Prongs agrees with Mr. Moony, and would like to add that Professor Snape is an ugly git.
Mr. Padfoot would like to register his astonishment that an idiot like that ever became a professor.
Mr. Wormtail bids Professor Snape good day, and advises him to wash his hair, the slimeball.”
And so the job of the Defense Against the Dark Arts is once again is available! It seems like no teacher can keep it for more than a year and everyone knows Snape wants it...
Ah, just lots and lots of great moments, can’t tell you how much I loved this book. I just want to live at Hogwarts and play Quidditch! (but I’d probably be terrible at it!) Hermione was a tiny bit annoying in this book but I know she only means well. This is definitely the best one yet!
I am looking forward to reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire! 4 more books to go. GO ME.
Film Rating: ★★★★
After reading the book, I have the need to watch the film afterwards! The first time I watched it was on ITV. I was so happy when it came on!
I feel like the HP films always have the best cast and crew. It always reflects so well on the books, the visual is so extraordinary. I loved the first two films but with the third film, even though it was just as good, they changed a few scenes. You can see that Harry, Ron and Hermione have slightly matured in this film. I just loved it when Hermione punched Malfoy! Best scene. “You! You foul, loathsome, evil little cockroach!”
I never read HP fanfiction before but I think I want to read the Draco trilogy by Cassandra Clare! Harry and Draco in love with Hermione?! Haha that’s a bit funny because well...doesn’t Hermione love Ron? Well that's fanfiction for ya. Any HP fanfiction recs, let me know ;)
