THE CONTAGION OF FEAR
SARS [severe acute respiratory syndrome] invaded Hong Kong in 2003. People in my Ma On Shan neighborhood were dying. I was scared. The HK Institute of Education where I was teaching closed. When the Institute reopened, we were required to wear masks – almost everyone in HK did, everyone but me. As I rode busses and trains I began to draw the masked population and to make THE BOOK OF SARS MASKS – which I’m now remaking.
