"You've got to be joking. That girl ain't your sister. You two don't look anything alike."
Amber becomes slowly aware of the night and the cold air as Ezra readjusts her weight in his arms. If she turns her head, she's eye to eye with Ezra's sleeve. He glances down at her and she quickly feigns sleep.
"Why do you care why I'm with her?" Ezra's breath comes out in cold puffs. "A story's a story. Just tell me what I need to know and I'm out of here." Amber cracks an eye open. A bulky man in a padded jacket stands in front of them and Ezra stares defiantly back.
A chuckle. "Let me think about it. How about you pass us a ciggy first?"
"In case you haven't noticed, my hands are full." Ezra is frosty. She doesn't dare turn her head, but she knows Ezra's 'why are you like this' expression without having to look.
"You could always hand the doll over to me, eh?" another laugh.
Silence. Then, "...my back pocket." he says stiffly. Amber watches through half-closed eyes and regrets it immediately. Ezra hisses almost inaudibly as the stranger's fingers linger a little too long on the back of his jeans.
"What a pair you two make, eh?" smoke blows in their direction. Amber curls into Ezra's chest involuntarily. Back to sleep, she wills herself. Back to Beau Reve...
...The world refocuses in vibrant green and sunny pastures. The crowd is jubilant as the rock concert winds down to a close. Violet rushes off the stage, sparkly eyeliner and mascara smudging down her cheeks from sweat. "How was I?" she says breathlessly, grabbing Amber's arms.
"You were, er, you were great!" Amber says, befuddled. "I didn't know you could play the guitar,"
Violet grins and tosses her artfully tousled curls back. "Yeah, I'm pretty great, right? Wait, there's someone I want you to meet." she drags Amber to a slim, delicate looking asian girl dressed in leather shorts and combat boots. "Amber, Hua. Hua, Amber."
"Pleased to meet you," Amber murmurs. Hua nods at her, thin lips curving into a red half-moon smile.
"Wait, wait, that's not all," Violet says distractedly. "I have to introduce you to- ah, where's Opal gone? She left already??"
"Next time," Amber assures her.
"Sure thing," Violet agrees. She begins chattering about something else, but Amber's thoughts are already gone, wandering above her head and flying back to the real world.
She shivers inside and wonders where she'll be when she next wakes up.
