  • Lustre Square Pendant Light By Tom Dixon
    2modern.com
Lustre is the first stoneware object in the collection and is handmade in a Dutch family-run factory established over 5-generations. The latest discovery in our continued exploration of extraordinary metallic finishes, the iridescent sheen is created using a top-secret glaze containing minerals and precious metals. The end result is a striking color change effect reminiscent of peacock feathers or oil slicks on water. The handmade process results in a totally unique and unrepeatable finish for each individual object. No two shades look the same because the glaze fixes to the stoneware in an unpredictable way. This produces a wide spectrum of color across each light, ranging from a pale lime to a deep bottle green. Sold as a single pendant only per different shape. Lustre provides direct ambient illumination. Use them as single pendants or mix and match the shapes for visual impact. Features. Lustre Collection. Year of Design: 2012. Material: Stoneware, Powder coated metal. Type: Pendant Light. Color: Iridescent. Model Number: LUS03-PUSM. Cable: Black braided cable. Ceiling Rose: Black Powder coated metal. Specifications: Dimensions (inches): Overall: 5.9Dia x 5.1H. Cable length: 98. Ceiling Rose: 4.9Dia. Lamp type: Halogen. Bulbs: 1 x 25W G9 halogen bulb (not included) Certification: UL/cUL Certified. The S-Chair has been the first great success from the young designer Tom Dixon in his time and meant his ascent from the underground to the design-elite. The curved chair is considered as classic today and can be found in the New York Museum of Modern Art among others. Looking back, originally designed as individual piece the S-Chair is a deciding design for the further career from Tom Dixon. Dixon spent the 1980es as performance artist in the London night clubs and there he welded together his pieced of furniture live on top of a stage. During that creative period in 1987 not only the Kitchen Chair out of ladles and pans emerged, but also the S-Chair that has been worked out again one year later by Dixon. It was only in 1988 when Tom Dixon equipped the freely curved S-Chair with the sophisticated coating and the swung forms. The “erotic” chair with the wide hips and the slim waistline has consciously been shaped as unicum in its time and does not only adapt to the demands of the serial furniture production. Despite or just therefore the young Tom Dixon and his unusual S-Chair caught the Italian furniture manufacturer Giulio Cappellini’s attention. That is how the S-Chair became the first design from Tom Dixon for Cappellini that has soon been followed by other products, such as the not less legendary Pylon Chair. Since 1991 / 1992 the S-Chair is produced by Cappellini. Despite the adaptation for the serial furniture production the manufacturing procedure of the braided chair is still elaborate. The S-Chair possesses a frame out of steel and plastic feet. Today, beside the elaborate basket works Wicker and Straw for the coating, also leather and other covers are available.

  • Kartell Joe Colombo 4801 Armchair
    hivemodern.com
Design Joe Colombo. Transparent or batch-dyed PMMA. Made in Italy by Kartell. For the first time in its 60-year history, Kartell will pay homage to one of the most iconic - and perhaps uncharacteristic - pieces in its archive with the reissue of Joe Colombo's 4801 Armchair. Originally designed by the Italian master in 1965, the 4801 chair is famous for being the only Kartell piece ever to be made entirely of wood. Now, nearly fifty years later, Kartell has developed the complex and technically challenging engineering methods necessary to produce the design as originally envisioned, in its signature plastic. An authentic symbol of design in the '60s, the highly sought-after 4801 chair is revered by private collectors and institutions alike, and has been displayed internationally at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The second generation of the 4801 chair is to be available in a numbered series beginning in February 2012, captures the curving sinuous lines and exact proportions of Colombo's design, now in sleek transparent or white and black plastic (PMMA). Joe Colombo, in his design utopia, gathered many of the common hopes of the 60's in Italy and Europe but was never slave to ideological bounds. His extremely fast escalation in becoming an internationally known designer brought him three medals at the XIII Triennale in Milan, the 1967 Compasso d'Oro award and creations which are included in permanent collections around the world. 24.4" w | 25.2" d | 27.2" h | seat: 9.8" h.
