The intern evaluations were today! The friday before Memorial Day. The last day of work before summer. The intern closet was bustling with nerves.
Thankfully, work was getting so busy it was all I could focus on. The last couple weeks of the internship are always the hardest because everyone is trying to prove themselves. The internships are seasonal. At the end of every cycle, the slackers are tossed away like last season’s trends. Those who shine are turned into stars which means... PROMOTION! Every intern’s dream: to have an official title at Mademoiselle Magazine.
Quinn had been anxiously awaiting this day. She sat at her desk wringing her hands.
“Quinney, you’re going to be fine,” I cooed.
“I don’t want to to be fine!” Quinn snapped, “I want to be promoted!”.
“Oh my god, Quinn! Laugh at yourself! It’s going to be -”.
Quinn’s look stopped me from uttering the word “fine”. Quinn would be fine. She had been at Mademoiselle a whole year before me. It was her time.
Hannah came back from her eval.
“Hey, girl! How’d it go?” I asked.
The look on Hannah’s face made me wish I hadn’t. Her eyes welled up with tears.
“I know that I kind of messed up in the beginning,” she blubbered.
Quinn and I rose to our feet and wrapped our arms around Hannah. She had become like our little sister. We gave her advice, straightened her out, and tried to protect her over the last few months. It still wasn’t clear what had exactly happened though.
“But you got better as time went on,” I said soothingly.
“Were they just really harsh?” Quinn asked.
“Well, yeah!” said Hannah, “They don’t want me back this summer,”.
Quinn and I gasped.
It was true. Hannah did mess up a lot in the beginning but she had improved. Even though there are only three interns in our department, there are a lot throughout the magazine. We didn’t think that Hannah would be among the ones to leave.
“Hannah, I am so sorry, Sweetie!” said Quinn giving her another hug.
“What else did they say?” I asked, “I mean, what about the fall?”.
“They did say I could reapply in the fall,” said Hannah.
“Yeah, I mean, if they don’t give the spot to my summer replacement,”.
“No one is replacing you!”.
“Not according to us anyway!”.
“Thanks guys,” she said.
She picked up her purse and headed for the door.
“I am just gonna go before people notice and start to gossip. I love you both. I’ll see you guys! I am not saying goodbye!” she said confidently.
Quinn and I stood side by side, one arm hooked around each other’s shoulders. It was hard not to feel like our little trio was breaking up.
“See you later!” said Hannah.
“Bye!” said Quinn.
I elbowed her gently.
Quinn caught herself.
“See you later!” she said.
It was terrible to watch Hannah go. We didn’t have much time to dwell on it. As soon as she left, someone was sent to fetch us for Molly. We thought it was strange that we were getting a combined evaluation. We entered Molly’s office timidly, our confusion transparent.
“Oh, relax!” said Molly, “You two don’t need to be evaluated. You know I love you both! You worked hard this season,”.
A sigh of relief washed over me. Quinn was still rigid. My shoulders sunk a little. I knew this isn’t how she had envisioned this moment. I hope what Molly had to say would be good!
“You are both being asked to stay on for the summer. I assume you both accept! Now, let’s get down to business,”.
I glanced at Quinn. No promotion. No special recognition. I could see she was disappointed. Poor Quinney.
“This summer we are taking on an intern from abroad. Her name is Alice Brighton. She is from the Mademoiselle UK office. Alice came highly recommended. She is extremely hard working. You may actually be able to learn something from her. However, you will still have to teach her a lot. New York and London style are different as well as the way we run this office. Quinn!”.
“Yes, Molly,” said Quinn attentively, trying to hide her disappointment.
“We are creating a special title just for you. You be Head of the Interns. You deserve this small promotion. The only reason Hannah lasted here as long as she did is because of the advice she got from you and from Bebe, of course, but Bebe wouldn’t even be in a position to give advice if it were not for you. So, you will be Head of the Interns and you will be responsible for training Alice in the office. Bebe!”.
“I will be relying on your instincts this summer. You’re a boho girl. A sort of modern day hippie type. I believe summer is your season. I will be needing you to step up to the plate. I hope you are up for the challenge,”.
“I definitely am!”.
“Good. Goodbye. Enjoy the long weekend. See you Tuesday,”.
Quinn and I got up and exited Molly’s office. We walked down the hall holding hands and practically skipping. It seemed that we had both been promoted. Not to full time official positions but still! Things were beginning to look up I think.
