Frequently Asked Questions

What is Polyvore?

Polyvore is a free, easy-to-use web-based application for mixing and matching images from anywhere on the web. It is also a vibrant community of creative and stylish people.

Where do the items in Polyvore come from?

Everything here has been created by Polyvore members using the editor. Sets are made from items imported using the bookmarklet (important notes about copyrights). The set detail page lists the items used in creating that set along with links to the original web page for each item.

Why does my set show "Based on a set made by XYZ"?

In the past, Polyvore allowed you to edit other people's sets and save them as your own. In order to give credit to the original author, we kept track of the original set and displayed it on the new set page. We have since disable the ability to edit other people's sets.

I have tons of items, how can I better organize them?

You can organize your items by tagging them in the Organizer. You can later access them by those tags.

  1. Go to the Organizer
  2. The Organizer will start by displaying all your items. You can also display items that are not yet tagged or items with specific tags
  3. Select the items that you wish to tag by clicking on them (each will get a border). You can de-select by clicking again.
  4. Type in one or more comma separated tags and click the button to apply those tags to your selected items.
  5. To untag, use the button

How can I post sets on my blog/forums/personal page?

Look for Embed this set link on the set detail page. You will get a dialog that gives you the code for blogs and forums. Copy the appropriate code and use it to post the set on other pages. The image will link back to Polyvore's set detail page.

Polyvore Editor

What is the Polyvore Editor?

The Polyvore Editor lets you compose your sets using items that have been imported into Polyvore by you or other users. Think of it as a very simple collage editor.

How do I use the Polyvore Editor?

The Editor has two main areas: the canvas and item panels. Simply drag items from the items panel over to the canvas. Once there, you can drag the items around, resize them by dragging on the small squares at each corner, etc...

The items panel contains different tabs:

My Items
Contains any items you have saved or used in the past. You can use tags to organize these items
Drafts
Contains your draft sets. You can drag a draft set over to the canvas to continue editing it
Sets
Contains any sets you have published. Dragging a set over to the canvas will load it for editing. If there is a draft version of that set available, the Editor will automatically load that version for you.
All Items
This is search interface to all the items imported to Polyvore by you or other users. You can search by keyword, site or color. You can open as many of these tabs as you want by clicking on 'New Tab'.

You can save your set as a draft and come back to continue working on it at a later time. Once you are happy with your creation, you can publish it with a title, notes and also add it to any groups you belong to.

Note: You can make changes to your sets at any time but you will have to re-publish them if you want others to see those changes.

Account/Profile

What do the various activity icons mean and where do they come from?

Polyvore keeps track of what is happening with your sets and items and lets you know when something interesting comes up. These include:

  • Favorite -- everyone's favorite icon: you get these if someone favorites one of your sets
  • Comment -- these let you know if someone has left a comment on one of your sets
  • Contact -- these let you know if someone has added you a contact. Be nice and add them back...
  • Item Usage -- you get a usage point whenever someone else uses an item you saved to create a set
  • Contest Wins -- you get a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place trophy whenever you win in a contest
  • Page Views -- these track how many times your sets, items and profile have been viewed

How can I customize my Polyvore profile?

You can customize your Polyvore profile by:

  • Setting a buddy icon:
  • Setting your home country:
  • Linking to you blog or home page: polyvore.com
  • Talking about yourself

You can update your profile whenever and as often as you want.

How can I delete my Polyvore account?

Before you delete your account, please be aware that you can update your profile to remove personal information (e.g., if you don't want your name to show up in search engines) and/or delete any of the sets or items that you have created.

If there are any other issues, please consider letting us know about them so that we can try to address them.

If you still wish to leave, you can delete your Polyvore account.

Groups

Polyvore Groups provide common spaces for exploring themes and for hanging out with like-minded people.

How do I create a group?

Each Polyvore member is allowed to create up to 5 groups. Before you create a new group, please browse the existing groups to make sure something similar to it does not already exist. If you find an existing group, please consider joining that group instead of creating a new one.

Once you have created a group, you need to play an active role in moderating it so that the submissions stay on topic. Groups that are highly focused and are actively moderated tend to do better than others.

How do I post my sets to a group?

You can post sets to a group from the group's main page

Or, once you have joined one or more groups, you can post to them directly from the Polyvore Editor's publish dialog box.

Contests

What are Polyvore Contests?

Polyvore Contests challenge the Polyvore community to create sets with specific themes. Contest winners will get to brag by showing off the trophies on their profile page. Some contests may even have prizes for the winners.

How do I enter a Contest?

You can browse contests to find open Contests to enter.

On the contest page, you will see a form for submitting your entry. You can select and enter one of your existing sets into the contest. If you don't have a suitable set ready, first use the Polyvore Editor to create one , then return to the contest page to select and enter your set. Note that some contests have submission rules, for example: Sets must contain two items from modcloth.com.

Once the contest has completed, you can return to find out about the outcome. You will also be notified by a Polyvore message if any of your entries have won in a contest.

How do I vote for a Contest?

Some contests are open for public voting, which means the Polyvore community gets to pick the winners. But before you start casting you vote, please note the following:

  • Only members who have created at least three polyvore sets are eligible to vote.
  • Please do not use fake accounts to vote. It ruins the fun for everyone and you risk being banned from Polyvore.

To vote for a contest, go the contest page after it has completed. If the contest is open for public voting you will see the voting slots on the page. To vote for an entry simply drag it into one of the voting slots. To change a vote just drag another entry into the same slot. Your selections will be saved automatically. You have three days to cast your votes after the contest has completed. After three days we announce the winners by summarizing all the votes.

  • Respect other people's views and beliefs

When using Polyvore, you should NOT:

  • Do NOT create adult content. No pornography, full frontal nudity, or sexually explicit language.
  • Do NOT promote violence or use hateful speech. No racist sets or comments.

  • Do NOT upload photos of yourself unless you are okay with other people using those photos. All items on Polyvore are considered public, meaning anybody else is free to use them. If you're not comfortable with this, then please don't upload your private pictures in the first place.
  • Do NOT create or upload content that infringes on any copyright, trademark, or patent.
  • Do NOT break any laws or participate in any illegal activities.

Sets and items that violate these rules will be deleted. People who abuse Polyvore will have their accounts deleted. If you come across sets or items that violate the rules, you can report them by clicking the "Report abuse" link on item/set pages.
