"Thanks Barbara I made the connecting flight in Houston, we are boarding in about...20 minutes." I smiled at the stewardess as she mimed the answer to the questions my manager was asking me from across the Atlantic.
"Have you been taking the medicine the doctor gave you?" she asked, sounding exactly like my mother actually.
"Yes mummy." I said in my best little girl voice.
"Don't sass me little miss." she said and then laughed "Have you managed to get on to anyone yet?" she asked.
"No, they're not picking up their phones. They were in Dallas this morning, and by the time I get to New Orleans they should be at the party. So maybe they are in the air at the moment." I had been calling Nick, Kevin, Mrs Jonas, Mr Jonas, Big Rob, Garbo, even Frankie but no one had answered. So here I was, about to board another plane to New Orleans and then find my way to the skating rink where Joe's party was being held, with nearly no idea where I was headed and completely doped up on nearly every allergy medication licensed by the Federal Drug Administration. I was hoping to surprise Joe at his party but so far I had no idea where I would even find him, so here I was off on an adventure with no clear destination in mind. One bonus though, I had found an awesome Wizard of Oz shirt in the gift shop in Houston while I was shopping and making use of my layover time sipping on a Venti green tea and nibbling on one of Starbucks' awesome choc chip cookies.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Where you headed?" the taxi driver at the New Orleans airport asked me as I slid into the cracked vinyl seat, warm from the heat of the day and pulled my suitcase in after me.
"I have no idea actually, ummmm, can you take me to the nearest skating rink?" I asked, realising exactly how stupid I sounded, especially with my Australian accent, looking like a lost windblown tourist who had just been dropped in New Orleans like Dorothy in Munchkinland.
"Yeah sure." he said, flicking a glance in my direction in the rear view mirror.
He turned the radio on as we pulled away from the curb into the traffic. Of course, the first song on the radio was 'Walk on By' by Bryan Adams -- Joe's and my latest song obsession. I hummed along and smiled quietly to myself.
I watched the unfamiliar landscape pass by my window, the heat of the New Orleans sun beating down on my neck through the back window of the cab.
The first rink we pulled up outside was located amongst some old warehouses. It had dingy windows and the sign was faded.
"Here you go miss." the cab driver spoke to me for the first time since the start of the journey.
"Oh, okay, could you please wait here for a second, I just need to check something." I grabbed my handbag and raced up the path. The doors were bolted shut and I returned to the cab. The taxi driver resumed driving with a nod when I sat back down. The next three rinks were located in the same area and none of them were open either.
We passed by the industrial areas, eventually the freeways gave way to more urban streets and we finally pulled up outside a popular looking rink.
"Hi, welcome to Skater's World! How are you today?" the perky blonde behind the counter greeted me. I was glad she didn't recognise me in my hat and Joe's sunglasses, with my red allergy nose.
"This is going to sound incredibly stupid but is there a birthday party happening inside right now?" I asked, trying not to sound like a complete idiot.
"Yeah there sure is, in the kid's birthday room. Are you a friend of Rebecca's?" she asked.
I smiled and sighed "Wrong birthday party. Sorry for your trouble." I turned and headed out the door.
"You could try 'Skate Country' they have loads of parties there too." she said.
I thanked her and returned to the cab.
"Not the right one." I explained to 'Mo' (hey, it's what the name said on his taxi licence). "Can we please try 'Skate Country.'?" I asked.
"Sure." Mo answered.
Wow, you couldn't shut this guy up I thought with a sarcastic smile to myself.
I took my sunglasses off and caught a glimpse of myself in the rear view mirror, doing a double take when I realised how much like Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer I looked at this point.
Digging around in my bag I unearthed a compact and attempted to repair the damage the tissues had done to my nose.
I brushed my hair, put on some mascara and hoped that I now resembled a human being.
"Okay, here we are." said Mo, pulling up in another parking lot. This one was completely deserted except for three black SUVs.
"Do you want me to wait?" he asked, as I pulled my suitcase out of the back seat.
"No, I'm pretty sure this is the right one." I said, pulling cash out to pay my fare and adding a large tip for Mo's patience with the ditsy Australian.
"Miss, can I get your autograph for my granddaughter?" Mo asked me before I moved away.
"It would be my pleasure." I answered pulling out a piece of paper and a pen writing a message and signing it with love.
As the taxi drove away I hitched my bag up on my shoulder and made my way through the deserted car park.
The door opened automatically and the cool of the air-conditioning washed over me I had time to take off my sunnies and blink before two staff members halted my progress in the doorway.
"Sorry miss the rink is closed today. Please come back tomorrow." one squeaky voiced teen said, showing off his braces with his broad grin.
"I'm just looking for someone. Is the Jonas party here?" I asked.
"Sorry miss, we can't tell you that." said his partner in crime, a short cute little red headed girl, obviously proud of the responsibility she had been given today.
"Can you just ask whether I can come in, my name is Amy. Would you mind just asking please?" I asked, hoping the desperation I was feeling wasn't leaking into my voice. I had come so far, my medication was wearing off and I didn't want to be stopped so close to my final goal.
I saw the girl nudge the teen boy and whisper in his ear. He looked at me again, squinting a little and letting out a small squeak. He whispered in her ear in return and they couldn't seem to come to an agreement. Just then, over walked the manager.
"Excuse me miss, but as my staff have said the rink is closed today. I'm sorry it looks like you have come a long way but you will have to come back tomorrow." he said in a kind voice, eyeing my suitcase and travel weary look.
"No, you see I'm looking for the Jonas party. I'm Joe's girlfriend. My name is Amy, please could you just ask for me." I pleaded, I really didn't want him to call the police thinking I was a crazy stalker.
"I'm sorry miss, I'll just get security and see if we can sort this out." he walked around the corner and I could hear him call to someone.
Great, I thought, this is definitely not what I had planned.
When the manager reappeared I had resigned myself to the fact that I was just having one of those days and that I may as well fly back to England and let myself be sick and weepy on a different continent.
Just then I saw who was coming back with the manager.
"Big Rob!" I shouted with relief in my voice.
"Amy!" he raced over, pushing the two teens and the manager out of the way and gathering me into a big hug.
When he finally released me he picked up my bags and led me into the rink, where the DJ was playing some old school hits. I could just make out Joe on the other side of the rink doing his John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever impersonation, his back to me and the lights reflecting off his hair.
Big Rob put my bags down, and called out to Mrs Jonas.
"Mrs. J. Look what appeared at the door!" he called across to Mrs Jonas who was sipping on a cup of coffee and taking photos of her boys out on the rink.
"Amy? Amy!! Oh my goodness you're here, in New Orleans!" she raced over to give me a hug.
I rested my head against her warm shoulder, and she hugged me tight.
"Let's go get you some skates. Joe is going to be so surprised! I can't believe you flew all the way over for his birthday."
A few minutes later I was laced into my size 8 rental skates, taken more allergy medication and was standing shakily at the edge of the rink, Nick was standing next to me holding a hand over his mouth as he tried not to laugh at me.
"Stop laughing Nicholas, I will push you over in a minute." I threatened, willing my shaky knees to move and actually get me onto the rink itself.
"I don't think you could actually accomplish that." he said, keeping his face [mostly] straight.
"Come on, just give me your hand and we can go and surprise Joe." he held out his arms.
"Nick I'm trying to convince my knees to move, but they just won't." I explained, then started laughing at myself.
"Okay, here we go." Nick tugged my hands and started pulling me onto the rink. I took a deep breathe and shut my eyes briefly. All of a sudden I felt my feet fly out from under me and when I opened my eyes again I was staring at the ceiling and Nick's face.
"Oops!" I said.
I must have let out a squeal when I went down because Nick's face was soon joined by Joe's shocked expression.
I shrugged and smiled at him.
"Surprise!" I laughed.
"You sure can make an entrance woman." he said and reached down, pulling me up and tightly into his arms, "What on earth are you doing here? I thought you were still in England?"
"I thought I would come and give you your birthday present in person, plus I hear they have cake somewhere around here." I smiled up at him, staring into his beautiful brown eyes.
Joe just looked at me like he could stare right into my soul, his face split into a grin and then he crushed his mouth down on mine. I could feel his smile when we kissed and it pushed the pain and fatigue right out of me as I was gathered close to him. It must have been a few minutes until we actually came up for air and his brown eyes smiled down at me.
"Good surprise?" I asked when he hadn't said anything yet.
"Great surprise." he answered and couldn't wipe the grin off his face.
With my hand securely tucked in one of his and his strong, reassuring arm around my waist we made our way across the floor. It didn't take long for me to get my confidence back and soon Joe and I were racing around the rink like two little kids playing tag.
"Okay guys, nearly time to wind it up, we've got a show to do tonight!" Mr. Jonas called out to the boys and I slowed down to listen to him.
"Got you!" Joe said grabbing my waist from behind and spinning me around to face him. My hands automatically slid up to his chest and I could feel the pounding of his heart.
I smiled at him gently "Happy birthday Joe."
"Only because you are here." he said quietly and placed his lips on mine again.
For the first time in months I felt like I was where I belonged. I don't care how that sounds, people might tell me that I rely upon him for my happiness, and the that is the truth. I just need to be near him, to hear his voice, feel the warmth of his hand on my back and I am complete. I am home. I am loved.
