“Good morning, Mrs. Anderson-Macey,” I said wiping my palms on my thighs before extending them for a hand shake.
“Call me Phoebe, we’re not at Victorian anymore…” she said walking past not acknowledging my hand. “I’ve read up on you editorial work.”
“You have?” I choked.
“Well, you read up on me didn’t you?”
“Of Course I did,” I said putting on my game face, “ Your editorial in the November/December volume this past winter was superb.”
“Thank-you. You writing is well done but lacks style. With help and mentoring you could go far.”
“Well isn’t that what you’re for?” I joked, lightening the mood.
“I’ll tell you what, I need help writing an article for next months issue. I’ll give a good report to headmistress Queller if you can produce a publishable article by 6 o’clock.”
“I’ll try my best ma’am,” I said taking the manila folder from her hands.”
“I’m sure you’ll do fine,” she said taking a drink of her Chai latte “You’ll work in there,” she pointed me in the direction of an empty office with a desk and a Mac book. “Good luck,” she said pulling the door up as she left. I opened the folder and sifted through the pictures and magazine articles. I pulled out my iPhone and started to send Erika a text, but there was a knock on the door.
“Uh, come in,” I called putting my phone in my lap.
“Hey, I’m April. I’ll be your assistant today. I’m just outside if you need me.” The face at the door startled me. April was tall and beautiful, around 5’ 8” and had long black hair. She had green striking green eyes and a perfect smile.
“Thanks, I’m Em. How long have you been working for Mrs. Anderson-Macey?”
“Oh, Phoebe? Just a little over three years,” she replied. “How did you get here?”
“I’m a senior at Victorian Academy and I proudly participated in Senior Skip Day, and this is my punishment.”
“Really?” April asked. She put down her folders and walked closer to my desk. “What’d you do?”
“My two best friends and I went to Disney World,” I replied taking a sip of my coffee. “We had a good time, but this is my punishment.”
“APRIL!”
“Ouch, gotta go. Duty calls.” April left, answering the call of Mrs. Anderson-Macey. “Bye!” she waved on her way out the door.

“Okay, so will you be home by like 7?” Erika asked on the on one line. I looked around the office I was working in, papers were littered all over the floor. Snickers wrappers filled the trashcans.
“Yeah, cause we’re having a movie night. In Erika’s room…” Samara said. Ah, movie nights were the epitome of schooling.
“My deadline is 6. I need to be done by then,” I said cradling my phone between my shoulder and my ear.
“Well hurry Mean Girls won’t wait forever…” Erika said.
“Listen, I…” I was interrupted by the door opening. “Hang on, girls.” My mouth dropped and I’m sure that I was drooling. Standing in the doorway was the hottest boy I had seen in forever. He had black hair and familiar green eyes.
“Hey, April told me to I should ask you to dinner,” he said. “I’m Dylan, by the way.”
“Oh,um. Yeah, hang on,” I stuttered. “Girls, I’m going to have to call you back…” I said into my phone hanging up. “Um, yeah. Dinner?”
“Yeah. April, works outside…she’s my sister.”
“Oh, really,” I said pushing my hair behind her my ears.
“Yeah, I stopped by to pick her up for dinner and she suggested I invite you too. We’re headed uptown. Care to join us…”
“Emily. I’m Emily,” I said gathering my stuff. “And I’d love to go to dinner…” I said.
“Sweet, I’ll let April know,” Dylan said closing the door. I picked up my phone and sent a quick text to Erika and Samara…I had a feeling I wouldn’t be watching Mean Girls tonight.
“Ready to go?” Dylan said, handing me my coat from behind the door.
“Thanks, and yeah. Let me just drop off my article.” I strode down the hallway to Mrs. Anderson-Macey’s office.
“Good work today, Emily,” she said, her red hair thrown up in a bun and her thin wire glasses slipping on her nose.
“Thank you. Thank you so much!” I said smiling. “And if you ever need an article for another issue…”
“I’ll keep you in mind dear,” she smiled. I nodded and closed her office door.
“Ready, kiddo?” April said taking me by the arm.
“Let’s head out,” Dylan said winking at me.
“So you’re a senior?” Dylan asked me after dinner.
“Yup…” I replied.
“Big plans for after high school?” April asked.
“I want to write,” I said. “It’s been a dream.”
“So that’s why you got paired with Phoebe, huh?”
“Queller works that way,” I said shrugging. “I guess I got lucky, I’ve been hearing horror stories all day.”
“Yeah, Phoebe’s not bad. You just have to get used to her nagging, complaining, and criticism. She’s really nice.”
“Yeah, I just hope she puts in a good word with Queller,” I said. April’s car pulled up to the front gates. “I guess this is me,” I said grabbing my stuff and opening the door, but Dylan beat me to it.
“It was nice to meet you, Emily,” he said helping me out of the car. “I’ll see you around.”
“Yeah, I had a good time, thanks guys.” I turned back to Dylan, and said, “I’ll see you later.”
“Bye Emily,” he said kissing me on the cheek.
“Bye Dylan.”
