Japanese Ghosts and Demons 2

Japanese Ghosts and Demons 2
Most creatures in stories of unfortunate spirits were women. They were vengeful ghosts, and the greater the misery endured by the woman during her lifetime, the more threatening her ghostly spirits would be after her death. Cruelty to women is a recurring theme in Japanese lore and legend. ~Norman A. Rubin "Ghosts, Demons and Spirits in Japanese Lore"

Cruelty to women is a huge trend in east Asian culture as a whole. Ultimately, many Chinese officials wrote stories and poetry in the point of view of suffering women, often to project the suffering they feel about serving the Court and, more importantly, the Emperor. Since then, there's been a huge wave of stories like that and they've been integrated into culture--particularly Japanese culture.
