FEATURED IN POLYVORE TOP STORIES 4/9/13
Lilly Pulitzer, a Palm Beach socialite-turned-designer whose tropical print dresses became a sensation, died on April 7 at the age of 81. Ms. Pulitzer (that’s right, THE Pulitzers… the newspaper family) got her start in fashion the day she spilled orange juice on her dress. She asked her seamstress to make dresses in colorful prints that would camouflage fruit stains. (I wonder if this story is true? It's in the New York Times.)

Her dresses were THE fashion item in the 1960s. I had one my Freshman year of college. It was just a little A-line shift in a bright print, but if it was good enough for Mrs. Kennedy (and it was), it was certainly good enough for me!
