    Alvar Aalto (1898-1976), one of the founders of Artek, was born in Kuortane, Finland. He is recognized today as one of the great masters of modern architecture. He began designing furnishings as a natural and important extension of his architectural thinking. His contribution to furniture design was among his foremost achievements in its own right, and it sowed the seed from which many of his architectural ideas sprang forth. Alvar Aalto's furniture and lighting pieces form the basis of the Artek range. The A809 Floor Lamp is one of Aalto's designs. Floor lamp A809 was designed for the living room of the house of the French gallerist Louis Carré. Features: Designed by Alvar Aalto, 1959. Made in Finland. Hand-riveted, white paint louvered steel shade, base and stand covered with black leather. Black plastic cable. Available with color: upper part polished brass or upper part nickel plated brass.     Artek was founded in 1935 by four young idealists, Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl. The business idea of the company was 'to sell furniture and to promote a modern culture of habitation by exhibitions and other educational means". While valuing traditions Artek has at the same time entered a new era. Combining the ideology of the radical founders and a contemporary and dynamic approach to product development, the company is more art and tech than ever. Floor lamp A811 was designed to supplement the Artek product range. The basic shape of the shade is similar to that of the lamp designed for the corridors of the head office building of the National Pensions Institute. Features: Designed by Artek, 1965. Made in Finland. Hand turned white painted steel shade with lower part hand-riveted steel, base and stand covered with black leather. Black plastic cable.
