  • English Classics Furniture Large Round Pedestal Dining Table

English Classics Furniture Large Round Pedestal Dining Table
What we have here is a truly magnificent large round pedestal dining table recently crafted by hand, with care in England. The maker is a third generation furniture maker and his generations of skill and knowledge shine through on this table. The round shape is perfect for encouraging conversation between all guests at the table. The splayed legs on the pedestal base are set back enough that they do not interfere with chairs or feet at the table. This size round dining table comfortably seats 8-10 and can squeeze more if necessary. The most obvious and beautiful feature of this table is the beautiful selection and expert execution of the flame mahogany wood. Flame mahogany (also known as crotch mahogany) features a swirling grain well suited for a large round pedestal dining table. The maker then “segments” the top. This means rather than veneering it all in one direction he takes pie shaped slices and veneers them in a circle creating more patterns with the grain. The edge is then banded with an ebony inlay and rosewood cross band. He finishes the entire table off with a seven stage hand finish giving this new table an antique look and feel. The result is this gorgeous dining table that will impress all who see it. The top is fixed to the base via four large brass thumb screws. This means it will ship in two pieces (top and pedestal) making it much easier to get inside your home.

With both leaves up, the table measures a full 72″ long x 60″ wide, perfect for regular dining or for special occasions. When the table is not in use, it can be placed against a wall like a sideboard. This functionality allows drop leaf dining tables like this one to adapt to many uses, hence the enduring popularity of the design after several centuries of use in traditional English furniture settings. The principle wood used in this lovely table is a rich selection of oak. Yew banding forms a beautiful, accentual border around the oval top, which contrasts beautifully with the oak. During construction, the wood was treated to an elaborate finishing process, beginning with hand-distressing and ending with a polish of fine, hand-rubbed wax. This last step helps to protect and enrich the natural beauty of the wood; wax can even be re-applied twice a year to maintain the polish. Finally the French legs, every bit as sturdy as they are elegant, are quite attractive in themselves and complement the oval table top. Few drop leaf dining tables can compare in quality to this astounding piece. The leaves continue to lift and drop very smoothly and rest on thick, solid wood supports that run beneath the table. The legs are very strong and their French design even strengthens the joins for durable support. The wood is also a prize selection, although one small part of the yew banding has been filled in owing to a small imperfection in the original wood. Overall the table is extremely well-made and will last for many decades to come as any truly heirloom quality piece should.
  • English Classics Furniture Antique Style Cherry Drop Leaf Dining Table

English Classics Furniture Antique Style Cherry Drop Leaf Dining Table
As flexible as it is beautiful, this stunning drop leaf dining table was recently hand-crafted in England by a third-generation cabinetmaker. Few furniture pieces offer such a solid combination of quality and function, one that is sure to complement any setting. From the selection of wood to the techniques used in the making of this exquisite drop leaf dining table, no detail was spared. The solid cherry and yew banding were first carefully selected by hand, and once the yew was inlaid into the cherry, the wood was then distressed using iron and stone implements. Next, the cabinetmaker applied stain, finish, and finally a thick, hand-rubbed coat of wax, which both protects and enriches the natural beauty of the wood. Standard furniture paste wax can also be re-applied to repair and maintain the wax coating. The result is a marvelously elegant dining table that would complement any setting. Often called a loper table, or sometimes even an Irish wake table, this piece offers a great deal of functionality in addition to its hand-crafted beauty. Because it is a drop leaf table, when not in use it takes up very little space relative to when it is opened. At 84″ long, it measures just 23.5″ wide with the leaves down and 60″ with both leaves up. This allows the table to be placed to the side–sometimes against a wall like a sideboard or hall table–serving as storage space or decor until it is needed for dining. Traditionally this has meant that the drop leaf dining table as a design enables the spaces that it occupies to serve multiple purposes (just like bureaus and nests of tables), which was quite a necessity in the small English homes and rooms that would have housed the first drop leaf tables. Structurally this table is quite strong. The solid cherry promises to not only grow more beautiful as time passes and a patina sets in, but it will also withstand years of use in the dining room. The leaves themselves rest on strong solid wood supports that slide out from the middle of the table. Lastly the round tapered legs, which end in sturdy pad feet, offer firm and durable support. This table will certainly withstand the test of time–the true measure of heirloom quality antique style reproductions!
