The special something: Electro-gadgets can be placed on the table lamp to be charged. It was only a question of time for the star designer Philippe Starck to approximate to modern problems. Flos - AIM Pendant Lamp
An arts object as pendant lamp: The AIM by Flos, made by the design brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, questions two fundamental light design basics. The first basic is the geometric middle of the light point: Lamps are mostly hanged in the middle of the room. In the AIM pendant lamp this doesn’t matter, since the grounding occurs via a long cable. The second basic is broken by both designers with the assumption that the cable is only there to be hidden: The AIM by Flos presents a cable forest with impetuous lines and as aesthetic function. The lamp’s head can be fixed at the adjustable diagonal in the desired height – the complete liberty allows unique combinations. The installations, which emerge thereby, remind us more of artworks than of design! The direct, clear light is suitable for living rooms as well as to illuminate single objects. Flos produces the AIM out of polished aluminium, ABS and polycarbonate. The AIM pendant lamp is energy efficient and it can create different light moods in a room because of the dimmable LEDs, while the 9 meters cable suits for different suspension variants.

In addition to t-shirts, teddy bears, kayaks and gas masks, Miss Sissi belongs to the "non-products for non-consumers” which Starck wanted to offer for "a moral market of the future” like a "political tool which aims directly at the heart of consumption.” Right after designing Miss Sissi, Starck said about the table lamp: "It was not me who created it, it was all of us.” The form language of Miss Sissi stresses anonymity and functionality and is thus a pretty good example of "non-design”. "In times where the trend on the market goes to far too complicated lamps with a narcissistic design, I thought, it would be necessary to regain the idea of an archetypical, small lamp like it is in all of us. The result is Miss Sissi. The usage of synthetic material facilitates the mass production and ensures that Sissi is affordable for everyone. As Sissi is a model of non-design, its conception arose from our collective memory. The table lamp spreads direct light and diffuse light. Light corpus, diffuser and diffuser holder are made out of injection molded, painted polycarbonate (UL-94 V0), the light's socket ensures stability with included sinker. On and off switch is regulated at the two-branch cable.

If one believes Marcel Wanders’ explanations, the Skygarden pendant lamp was inspired by the stucco ceilings in his house: ”There were astonishing antique ornamented stucco ceilings in my ancient house. I called them my Skygarden. It looked good all the time – completely without green thumb and without any kind of care. It didn’t need water or sunlight and lived only with the warm beams of the electric light among it. I liked it that much, that I couldn’t leave it behind when I moved away. I had to find a way of taking it with me into my new home. So I took my tools and stole it from the roof. This fabulour piece of history is now hidden in a small architectural area in the core of my new home, where I can share it with friends. If you don’t tell anybody about that, I can also share the secret with you”. Marcel Wanders.

    Flos - Taccia Floor Lamp
Achille and Pier Giacomo designed the table and floor lamp Taccia in the year 1958 for Flos. The lamp classic offers indirect and reflected floor illumination as well as an adjustable diffuser out of transparent glass. In an interview from 1970, the ancient master Achille Castiglioni said about Taccia: ”It is the Mercedes Benz among all the lamps for us; a symbol of success, possibly because the socket is similar to an ancient pillar. When we designed the Taccia Lamp however, not the prestige stood in the foreground. We focused on the surface that stays cool”. The conception from Taccia was thought by the Castiglionis in 1958, the prototype was then presented one year later. However, the Flos manufacturer took it’s time to prove the design before the Taccia Lamp went into serial production in 1962. The reflector of the Taccia Lamps possesses a glossy white lacquered interior space and a white powder coated exterior. The adjustable diffuser consists of mouth blown, transparent glass, and the lamp’s body of black or silver anodized, continuous aluminium casting. The socket is made out of polished, nickel chromed and zapon lacquered steel. The On/Off control is on a switch in the electric cable.
