Nicolas Barth Nussbaumer CONCAVE - 39 mm, Quartz, sunray dial, steel bracelet

    More info
Nicolas Barth Nussbaumer CONCAVE 316 - Large black dial
The Concave watch, by Swiss designer Nicolas Barth Nussbaumer, challenges the traditional design of the modern watch by integrating the dial and the watch case into one form so that all visible elements of the watch are concave. Barth Nussbaumer explains "I wanted to create a watch where the case and the dial fused together giving the impression they are a single form. Even the hands of the watch are crafted to match the concave contours of the form. The watch dials are inspired by a human eye and the changing gradients of colour. This adds depth and sensuality to the concave form." The stainless steel case measures 39 mm. The black dial is adorned with 60 diamonds with a total of 0.25 carats - one diamond for each minute. The watch is fitted with a black calfskin strap with stainless steel pin buckle. Strap size Medium is mounted on the watch. A stainless steel bracelet is available for additional purchase. Swiss Made. Type: 2 hands. Movement: ETA Quartz 956.032 H3. Case: 39 mm, stainless steel. Crystal: Sapphire. Dial: Black laquered. Strap: Black calfskin. Vivianna Torun Bulow-Hube, know as Torun was born on December 7, 1927 in Malmo, Sweden. Her father was director of town planning in Malmo and her mother was a sculptor. Torun was the youngest of four children, born after a gap of nine years. All four children pursued artistic careers with a brother and sister becoming architects and another sister, a poet. But it was Torun who became the most famous, as the first woman silversmith in the world to gain international recognition. Torun studied at Konstfack, the School of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, beginning in 1945 while pregnant with her first child, Pia. Eventually she married the child's father, a Danish journalism student. In 1948, Torun spent the summer in Paris meeting Picasso, Braque, Matisse and the other great artists of the day. She married a French architect and lived in Stockholm until 1956 having a second child, a son, Claude. As early as 1952, Torun exhibited her jewelry, made both in Stockholm and France (and bearing hallmarks from each country) in Paris. In 1956, Torun and her husband divorced and she lost custody of her son. She moved to France with her third husband, Walter Coleman, an Afro-American painter, meeting many of the jazz greats of that time. She designed jewelry for among others, Billie Holiday which Holiday wore when she performed. The couple moved to Biot in the south of France in 1958 to avoid political problems they were encountering in Paris as a result of the war in Algeria.Torun produced many pieces during this period when young Swedish silversmiths would come to work in her studio, introducing her to new techniques. Torun renewed her acquaintance with Picasso who lived in the area and an exhibition of Torun jewelry was held at the Picasso museum in Antibes from 1958 to 1960. Torun had two children with Walter, Ira and Marcia. In 1965, her marriage broke up and in 1966, she became involved with the Subud spiritual movement, an association which continues to today. In 1961, Torun won the Lunning Prize which was awarded from 1951 to the 1970s to someone who had "pioneered a unique artistic contribution". In 1968, she moved to Wolfsburg Germany and in 1975 to the neighboring village of Wendhausen to be closer to the Subud community. She had a workshop and worked with other artists in an association called "Die Schwinge".Beginning in 1967, Torun's production was taken over by Georg Jensen silver. Since moving to Germany, Torun has worked on things other than jewelry including cutlery, chinaware and handbags. In 1978, Torun moved to Indonesia where she still lives. On November 5, 1992, Torun was awarded the Prince Eugen medal by King Carl XVI Gustav of Sweden. The medal ia bestowed for outstanding artistic achievement. In September of 1992 Georg Jensen in Copenhagen held an exhibition to celebrate 25 years of Torun's association with the company, 45 years of working with silver and her 65th birthday. From October 1992 to January 1993, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in the Louvre held a 45 year retrospective of Torun's work.

Harald Neilsen Bio: Harald Nielsen (1892 - 1977) is an important figure in the history of the Georg Jensen Silversmithy. He was not only a masterful designer; he helped facilitate a smooth transition from the first generation of the firm’s designers, notably Georg Jensen and Johan Rohde - to those who followed, and played a key role in ensuring the continuity of high standards of craftsmanship and design creativity. Nielsen was the younger brother of Georg Jensen’s third wife, Johanne Nielsen. Although he aspired to be a painter, in 1909 he became an apprentice in Jensen’s small workshop, where he was initially employed as a chaser. Later, he became one of the Silversmithy’s designers and the director of the smithy’s school for apprentices, the latter a position he held for seventeen years. He served as the Silversmithy’s director from 1954 through 1958, and as its artistic director from 1958 to 1962. A talented designer in his own right, Nielsen created many jewelry, holloware, and flatware designs for the Jensen firm. His designs are characterised by an emphasis on form and line, with a minimum of ornamentation. There is often a striking similarity between the work of Nielsen and Rohde. Like many of Rohde’s designs, Nielsen’s often possess a small amount of applied ornamentation; a stylized dolphin was a favorite device. Other designs by Nielsen, particularly those that reflect the pared-down functionalist style of the 1930s, clearly stand apart from the work of Rohde and other Jensen designers. A prime example is Nielsen’s sleek, geometric flatware design known as “Pyramid” introduced in 1926. Excerpt from Georg Jensen Holloware, The Silver Fund Collection.

Georg Jensen Bracelet No 73 by Sigvard Bernadotte Stunning curved solid segments hinged together beautifully. Heavy. In excellent original condition. Sigvard Bernadotte (1907 - 2002) was a Swedish prince, the second son of King Gustav VI of Sweden. He was also the brother of Queen Ingrid of Denmark. As a young man, he wished to become an actor, but his father and grandfather were against it. Thus deterred, he went on to study art history at Sweden’s Uppsala University. His interest in drawing and painting developed during this period and, in 1929, after completing his degree at Uppsala, he enrolled in the School of Decorative Arts, in Stockholm. In 1930, he attended the Stockholm Exhibition and was greatly affected by what he saw there. Bernadotte’s connection with the Georg Jensen Silversmithy began in 1930. His talent as a designer was recognized by Jorgen Jensen, Georg Jensen’s second son who was then living in Stockholm, and by Niels Wendel, a Swede who was a partner in the Jensen firm. Wendel passed along a recommendation to the Silversmithy general manager and Bernadotte was offered a contract to design for the company. The designs Bernadotte created for the Silversmithy represented a completely new look for the firm. Thoroughly modern, they are characterized by an emphasis on form. Bernadotte had a predilection for classic geometric shapes, especially cylinders, funnels and spheres. There is also a strong element of streamlining in his work. Ornamentation is restrained and is generally confined to straight, often parallel, incised lines. His work, which is readily identifiable, consistently exudes a cool, understated elegance. Excerpt from Georg Jensen Holloware, The Silver Fund Collection.

Nicolas Barth Nussbaumer CONCAVE 315 - Small white dial
The CONCAVE watch, by Swiss designer Nicolas Barth Nussbaumer, challenges the traditional design of the modern watch by integrating the dial and the watch case into one form so that all visible elements of the watch are concave. Barth Nussbaumer explains "I wanted to create a watch where the case and the dial fused together giving the impression they are a single form. Even the hands of the watch are crafted to match the concave contours of the form. The watch dials are inspired by a human eye and the changing gradients of colour. This adds depth and sensuality to the concave form." The stainless steel case measures 30 mm. The white dial is adorned with 60 diamonds with a total of 0.15 carats - one diamond for each minute. The watch is fitted with a white calfskin strap with stainless steel pin buckle. Strap size Medium is mounted on the watch. A stainless steel bracelet is available for additional purchase. Dimensions: 6"W X 5" (Interior measurement) Drop: 2.5"L X .57"W Vivianna Torun Bio: Vivianna Torun Bulow-Hube, know as Torun was born on December 7, 1927 in Malmo, Sweden. Torun was the first woman silversmith in the world to gain international recognition. Torun studied at Konstfack, the School of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, beginning in 1945 while pregnant with her first child, Pia. Torun produced many pieces during this period when young Swedish silversmiths would come to work in her studio, introducing her to new techniques. Torun renewed her acquaintance with Picasso who lived in the area and an exhibition of Torun jewelry was held at the Picasso museum in Antibes from 1958 to 1960. In 1961, Torun won the Lunning Prize which was awarded from 1951 to the 1970s to someone who had "pioneered a unique artistic contribution". In 1968, she moved to Wolfsburg Germany and in 1975 to the neighboring village of Wendhausen. She had a workshop and worked with other artists in an association called "Die Schwinge". Beginning in 1967, Torun's production was taken over by Georg Jensen silver. Since moving to Germany, Torun has worked on things other than jewelry including cutlery, chinaware and handbags. In 1978, Torun moved to Indonesia.

Georg Jensen's wonderful modern sterling silver bracelet, No. 88A by the designer Henning Koppel. Henning Koppel's signature modern flowing form is beautifully expressed in this large, heavy bracelet. Designed for Georg Jensen by Henning Koppel in 1940s. The "Splash" bracelet is handmade in Denmark, in the 1950s. It measures 7" closed and is in excellent condition. A similar example is pictured in Georg Jensen: A Tradition of Splendid Silver, by Janet Drucker, p. 153. Henning Koppel (1918 - 1981) was educated as a sculptor and designer at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and the Academy Rancon in Paris. During World War II, he lived in Stockholm, where he served as an assistant to the sculptor Carl Milles, painted watercolors, and designed jewelry for Svenskt Tenn. In 1945, Koppel returned to Copenhagen and joined the Georg Jensen firm. Koppel’s jewelry, holloware and flatware designs represent a radical departure from the work of all the Jensen designers who preceded him, from the lush, nature-inspired designs of Georg Jensen himself to the austere, functionalist designs of Sigvard Bernadotte. Koppel’s highly original work, infused with the energy and nonconformist spirit of modern art, signaled a bold new direction for the firm; it attracted international attention and made the Georg Jensen company a leader in what became known as Scandinavian modern design. Henning Koppel’s drawings and works in silver, porcelain, and glass are represented in museum collections throughout the world. His many awards include the Lunning Prize in 1953; gold medals at the Milan Tiennale in 1951, 1954, and 1957; the International Design Award of the American Institute of Interior Designers in 1963; and the ID Prize of the Society of International Design for the stainless steel tableware he designed for Jensen in 1966.
