  • Herend Pair of Imperial Foo Dogs
    scullyandscully.com
Herend Pair of Imperial Foo Dogs
With their origins in China, Herend’s Foo dogs are the perfect models to be dressed in the dramatic Chinoiserie pattern called Macao. This pattern first made its debut at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair where it, among other patterns on display, led to the Herend manufactory winning a gold medal. The saturated tones of Macao are due to the fact that the pattern is painted in enamel colors. Enamel painting is a very difficult process in that the enamel has a unique density and more layers than normal are applied to create the rich pigmentation. However, it is a balancing act of beauty versus technical constraints because if one layer is applied unevenly, it can prevent the paint from adhering to the piece. Therefore, only seasoned artists, with their skills and knowledge, are entrusted with working with enamel colors. Limited edition of 250. Each measures 6 ½"l x 3"w x 6"h.
  • Herend Reserve Birds and Nest

    Herend Reserve Birds and Nest
Hopefully mother bird is an early riser and got her worm because she clearly has a hungry chick on her hands with more about to come! One thing she has to be less concerned about is safety because father bird created the perfect little home for this songbird family and wove a tight little nest hidden among the tree branches. Of course, like all discerning women, she tested his building skills first and only picked the suitor that offered her the best sanctuary. While the scene is sweetly familiar, what is new is the type of bird. Bird watchers should rejoice in seeing this recently discovered species which originated in Hungary but is starting to be spotted by birders all over North America. With dramatic plumage in raspberry, various shades of orange and 24K gold, sightings are starting to come in from east to west coast as this new species clearly establishes itself in a new location. Measures 4 ¼"l x 6 ½"w x 3 ¼"h. Limited edition of 200.
  • Herend Reserve Tree Frogs On Leaf
    scullyandscully.com
Herend Reserve Tree Frogs On Leaf
Some species of tree frogs use a technique called startle coloration to protect themselves from predators. If a hungry bird or snake happens to approach a sleeping tree frog, the frog will suddenly open its bulging eyes and reveal the bold splash of red. This will usually stun the predator long enough for the frog to gain a few seconds to escape. In the case of Herend’s tree frogs, the artists may have inadvertently compromised the full effect of startle coloration by painting the frogs in such a captivating way that rather than being stunned, the primary response is apt to be admiration. Measures 9 ¼"l x 3 ¾"h. Limited edition of 250. Handmade Herend porcelain from Hungary.

Gray wolves communicate through subtle as well as dramatic facial postures and looking directly in the eyes is a commonly accepted behavior. The sophisticated coolness of the platinum and gray-tone fishnet yields center stage to the drama of the wolf’s fiery eyes whose message is clearly in a universal language. Limited edition of 150. • Herend Tang Horse Limited Edition Figurine
    scullyandscully.com
Herend Tang Horse Limited Edition Figurine
War horses were the pride of the Tang (AD 618-907), a dynasty of prosperity, military expansion and artistic achievement. Tang emperors were known for their openness to new ideas about art, religion, philosophy and music, unlike most Chinese dynasties which tried to cut off their empire from outside influences. Since the horse was so revered culturally, it was often the subject of artistic endeavors during this time. Among the most treasured Tang art figures were ceramic horses glazed in cobalt blue since they comprised such a small percentage of all Tang horses. Cobalt was an extremely expensive commodity from the Middle East that was even more valuable than gold. Its use meant the horse was created for someone of the highest rank. While the price of blue has decreased over the years, the use of the color still renders this figurine the pride of any Tang nobleman. Sapphire blue fishnet combined with the blue coloration of the chrysanthemum pattern on the blanket offset by the 24 karat gold highlights throughout the body make for a very saturated and intense figurine. Handmade and hand-painted in Hungary on white porcelain. Limited Edition of 150. Measures 14"l x 12"h.

  • Herend Reserve Collection Mermaid on Shell
    scullyandscully.com
Herend Reserve Collection Mermaid on Shell
Depictions of mythical mermaids differ strongly. Sometimes they are sirens of the sea luring sailors to their deaths with their song. Other times they are keepers of the ocean charged with rescuing mankind from accidents. Regardless of the mermaid’s intent, the legends agree that they are elusive, alluring beauties. Herend’s mermaid, with her soft smile, is not sharing her secrets today but even without her song, she still enchants. Perched on a giant clam shell with its pearlized core exposed, she holds a 24K gold tulip shell - maybe a silent invitation to the riches of the watery depths below. Blue layered upon green strokes of color comprise her key lime fishnet- the perfect camouflage for a water nymph. Perhaps not even her porcelain skin will prevent her from slipping away to once again entice and confound seafarers everywhere. Limited Edition Size 250. (9"L X 10"H)

  • Herend Reserve Collection Buddha
    scullyandscully.com
    Herend Reserve Collection Buddha
Meaning “The Awakened" or “Enlightened One,” Buddha was the title given to Siddhartha Gautama, believed to have lived 563-483 B.C. According to legend, Gautama left a life of luxury at age 29 and devoted himself to years of contemplation and self-denial, finally reaching enlightenment while meditating beneath a tree. Henceforth, he spent his life teaching his beliefs and achievement of the enlightened state of Nirvana. Herend’s Reserve Collection Buddha is modeled after a smaller version sculpted in 1937 by Kata Gacser. The chinoiserie design decorating Buddha’s robe was created in 1996 to symbolize autumn, with its glorious colors of nature offset by a sense of mourning over the pending harshness of winter. The skills of eighteen Herend craftspeople are required to create each piece, which takes over a day to paint. Limited Edition Size 250 (8.6"H)
  • Herend Reserve Collection Sea Life Vase
    scullyandscully.com
Herend Reserve Collection Sea Life Vase
From the 2008 Frankfurt collection, a dramatically painted vase and bowl offer a peek into an underwater paradise. Depending on the piece, lionfish, powder blue sturgeon, clownfish, and threadfin butterflyfish (among others) play around coral and kelp. While Herend is famous for its fishnet painting, for these sea life vignettes Herend artists have wisely chosen to use a natural coloration thereby maximizing the detail and beauty of the tropical fish. The aquatic landscape is further enhanced by various shades of blue which give the viewer a sense of depth while hinting at the tropical sun shining overhead. (15"H X 9.5"W)
  • Herend Reserve Collection Silk Road Elephant
    scullyandscully.com
Herend Reserve Collection Silk Road Elephant
This striking elephant is a replica of an antique figurine depicting an elephant carrying goods along the silk road. The silk road was an interconnected series of ancient trading routes stretching from China to the Mediterranean Sea. The silk road not only served as a means of moving precious commodities back and forth but was also significant for bringing new cultural influences. This Pink Elephant figurine certainly demonstrates this Eastern influence through its highly ornate decorative style including the dramatic rug on its back. The figurine was reissued from the Herend archives to commemorate the Manufactory’s 180th anniversary. Limited edition size of 180. 10 ¼" X 3 ½" x 9 ½"h.

  • Herend Reserve Collection Tropical Reef
    scullyandscully.com
    Herend Reserve Collection Tropical Reef
It takes one Herend painter 4 days to create this masterpiece which consists of 40 different components. Only a complex figurine could properly convey a coral reef- known as the busiest neighborhood in the ocean. Often referred to as the rainforest of the sea, the diversity and colors of the animals inhabiting a coral reef is unmatched anywhere else in the aquatic realm. While many theories abound, there are two popular thoughts as to why the fish in a coral reef are so colorful and textured. First, the reef and its inhabitants reflect so many colors that the fish are just doing their part to blend in with their surroundings and be less obvious to predators. Their colors act as camouflage. A second reason is that the colors and patterns allow fish to identify friend and foe and find their own kind in the crowded reef environment. With Herend’s tropical reef, the viewer has stumbled on a symphonic fishnet celebration with blue, key lime, and butterscotch fish dancing through the welcoming arms of a key lime coral dappled with 24K gold. Conch shells, sea snails, brain coral and starfish, while not as exuberant as their fish friends, add their own style of fun to the neighborhood party. Limited Edition Size 100. (8.5"L X 13.5"H)

  • Herend Reserve Collection Peacock
    scullyandscully.com
    Herend Reserve Collection Peacock
In reality it is a simple courtship display yet the striking fanned plumage of peacocks has fascinated people for thousands of years. From folklore to mythology to the history of a nation (it is the national bird of India), peacocks have both enchanted and drawn suspicion. To the peahen (female peacock), the peacock’s famous train made up of elongated tail “covert” feathers decorated with “ocelli” or eye spots is simply a test to determine the best mate. The greater the number of ocelli, the more attractive she finds the peacock. In ancient Greece, the ornamental eyes had a different significance. According to Greek mythology, the god Zeus was having an affair with the beautiful priestess Io. To hide the affair from his jealous wife, Hera, he turned Io into a cow. Hera, however, was not fooled by this and tricked Zeus into giving her the cow as a gift. Hera then sent her faithful servant Argus to protect the cow and since Argus was covered in one hundred eyes, he made a fine watchman. Zeus in turn dispatched Hermes to release Io from her captivity. Hermes accomplished this by lulling Argus and his many eyes into sleep and then killing him. To honor her faithful watchman, Hera took Argus’ eyes and placed them on the tail of her favorite bird - the peacock. Argus would certainly be proud of how the artists at Herend have immortalized him. Limited Edition 250. (9.75"W X 9.25"H)
  • Herend Reserve Collection Geisha
    scullyandscully.com
    Herend Reserve Collection Geisha
The elegant, high-culture world that geisha are a part of is called karyûkai or "the flower and willow world". With that in mind, Herend artists have reinterpreted their geisha originally created in 1943 by Gyula Maugsch. They have dressed her up in a kimono in the ornate Empereur pattern which features lotus blossoms among other flower motifs finished off by a striking green border alluding to the long, sweeping branches of the willow tree. This level of detail takes 3 Herend artists a combined total of 42 hours to complete. Limited Edition Size 250. (5.5"L X 8.5"H)
  • Herend Reserve Collection Pitcher w/ Lizard Handle
    scullyandscully.com
Herend Reserve Collection Pitcher w/ Lizard Handle
Herend Chinoiserie had no parallel in 19th century porcelain and it is this creative period which gave rise to the shape of this elaborate water pitcher with a stylized Chinese water dragon handle. It would take until the 21st century before it was paired with the elaborate Jiangxi pattern. The result is both an homage on the part of Herend artists to their brothers in the East as well as a bit of a competitive tweak. For while the Jiangxi pattern was inspired by the Far East, it was designed by Herend artists who deliberately endowed it with a significant name. Jiangxi is a province in China that houses the city of Jingdezhen otherwise known as the Capital of Porcelain. It takes 2 painters a combined total of 65 hours to create this masterpiece. (13.5"H)

  • Herend Reserve Collection Laughing Buddha
    scullyandscully.com
    Herend Reserve Collection Laughing Buddha
The Laughing Buddha emerged from Chinese folktales of the 10th century. The original stories centered on a monk named Ch'i-t'zu who was an eccentric but much-loved character who worked small, charitable wonders. The tales of Ch'i-t'zu soon spread throughout China, and he came to be called Pu-tai which means "hempen sack." Of course, any Feng Shui practitioner would be well acquainted with this smiling character since he is a popular symbol of happiness, generosity and luck and his presence is said to impart wealth and abundance on any home or office. Any depiction of the Laughing Buddha is heavy on symbolism. For example, many theories abound about why he is shown with elongated earlobes with the most pervasive being that the earlobes reflect that the Buddha is all-hearing and has ears big enough to listen to all of our tales of suffering. His name, Pu-tai, refers to the omnipresent hempen sack containing precious gifts. At the same time, he also uses the sack to dispose of people’s problems. The Laughing Buddha usually clutches a set of prayer beads which represent “a never-ending meditation practice, even when engaged in worldly activities”. His ample stomach, which is rubbed for good-luck, is prominently exposed to reflect “abundance” as well his ability to stomach all of the world’s problems and transform them into happiness. The artists at Herend have made the Laughing Buddha their own by incorporating new layers of symbolism. By painting him in the rich, highly ornate Jiangxi pattern, they have created one more reference to abundance. The Jiangxi pattern also features a recurring lotus motif which is very prominent in Buddhism. The lotus flower represents the Buddha mind because, “though growing in mire, it puts forth beautiful, immaculate flowers”. Presented in a limited edition of 250, the Laughing Buddha stands 14” tall and comes in a luxury case. Limited Edition Size 250. (5.25"L X 14"H)
  • Herend Reserve Collection Watchful Owl
    scullyandscully.com
    Herend Reserve Collection Watchful Owl
It isn’t vanity that drives the owl to don his face mask daily; rather, these feathers heighten his sensory perception and allow him to notice the smallest stirrings on the forest floor. Known as a facial disc, the feathers act as a parabola which collects sound waves and directs those to the owl’s ears. Along the same lines, the owl’s mottled feather pattern is more than just decorative and serves to camouflage the owl by allowing him to blend into the branches of a tree. Brought to dramatic new heights by Herend’s painters in a mantle of green, rust, brown and terracotta, the Watchful Owl’s camouflage wings allow this nocturnal bird of prey to become a stealth hunter. During the day, it allows him to get a good day’s rest hidden among the tree branches, undisturbed by scolding songbirds who, under the protection of daylight when an owl is less effective without the element of surprise, will often gang up on an owl to let him know exactly what they think of him (from the safe distance of a branch or two away of course). Herend Reserve Collection Rothschild Birds
Suddenly, the garden was devoid of any melodic tunes. A serious tone had overtaken the usually noisy expanse as word spread quickly that the Baroness de Rothschild was missing her pearl necklace. Ignorant of the disturbance, two songbirds are chattering away excitedly about their recent discovery. Once they realize who the rightful owner is, the songbirds will do the honorable thing because they proudly demonstrate their loyalty to the Rothschild household by the dramatically painted pattern on their wings. Their blue, green and brown fish scales have become intertwined with the Rothschild name and story. For the first time, the Rothschild Bird pattern has been rendered in sculptural form. Offering a stylized depiction of the birds, this lovely figurine brings to life the story including the tree that anchors all 12 Rothschild Bird motifs, the colorful buzzing insects as well as the famous pearl necklace. Herend Reserve Collection Large Giraffe
Herend’s newest figurine will no doubt incite similar curiosity to those first “diplomatic” giraffes since their newest introduction is an ambassador of creativity. Showcasing an unusual spin on traditional fishnet, the reserve collection giraffe features a modified fishnet made to look like animal print. This new fishnet technique is a complex process. It takes one artist over 20 hours to paint since it requires much concentration as the artist has to create “unnatural” breaks to mimic the spots - contrary to the usual, fluid style involved with painting fishnet. Herend Reserve Rooster Fishnet Rainbow Colors
A magnificent new fishnet design premiers on Herend’s classic rooster, a commanding figure designed by Sandor Keleti in 1924. For the first time in Herend’s 182-year history, a harmonious medley of fishnet colors is composed in concert to create a synchronized fishnet symphony. The product of 17 craftspeople, each rooster requires 19 hours to paint. Herend’s traditional single-colorway fishnet design first took shape in 1874, when an artist was inspired by a Chinese plate’s fish scale design and replicated it onto a rooster figurine’s breast to imitate feathers. In keeping with tradition, Herend again chose a rooster to model the unprecedented symphonic fishnet design. Limited Edition Size 250. (16"H)

  • Herend Reserve Collection Tulip Vase
    scullyandscully.com
    Herend Reserve Collection Tulip Vase
Originally manufactured by the Alt Wein Porcelain Manufactory, the Tulip vase was replicated by Herend in the early 1900s and then reintroduced to great success in pink coloration in 2007 and yellow coloration in 2008. The vase itself in both shape and decoration is an example of Secession style (what the Art Nouveau movement was called in Vienna). This school of design was richly ornamental embracing asymmetrical, flowing lines and often incorporating stylized plant motifs. Behind the scenes, the vase is a complex dance between its impressive height and its delicate features which is accomplished through skillful design and carefully sculpted components. Limited Edition Size 25. (18.25"H)

    Herend Reserve Collection Bison
His thick fur makes him impervious to snow and he uses his large head like a snow plow and yet the American bison can achieve speeds of up to 40 MPH. Mother Nature may have made him a highly efficient powerhouse but North America’s largest land mammal has always felt more hulking than handsome – until now. The artists at Herend have beautifully captured his virility and strength and covered it all in a mantle of gold accents and dramatic chocolate fishnet. Next breeding season the cows definitely won’t play so hard-to-get! Limited edition of 250.
  • Herend Reserve Collection Canadian Ducks
    scullyandscully.com
    Herend Reserve Collection Canadian Ducks
Two impressive painting techniques combined in one striking figurine: symphonic fishnet coupled with faux bois! Two Canadian ducks pose in their feathery finest with alternating colors of yellow, green, brown and terracotta fishnet offset by dramatic gold highlights. Their coy expression could be attributed to the fact that they know a secret: the logs they are sitting on aren’t real. Herend artists have done a masterful job painting in the faux bois style and only a close-inspection reveals the true porcelain composition. Limited Edition 250. (9.5"L X 7.75"H)
  • Herend Reserve Collection Toucan
    scullyandscully.com
    Herend Reserve Collection Toucan
Also described as the “rainbow-billed” toucan, these birds are gregarious in both coloration and behavior. Known for croak-like calls that can be heard a ½ mile away, keel-billed toucans like to be social and playful and are considered one of the noisiest birds in the jungle. While this South American bird reflects the effervescence of his native land, his aerial acrobatics cannot be described as having any Latin rhythm. Keel-bill toucans are notoriously awkward fliers and prefer to hop- perhaps to better show off their lovely blue pedicure. The hallmark of the toucan is their colorful bill and yet the origin of its unusual size (it can be almost as big as the bird) and color are not fully understood. Some experts propose the beak is used for thermoregulation. Others theorize that the beak may intimidate smaller birds or it allows the toucans to exploit a feeding niche by being able to pluck fruit off of branches too small to bear their weight. What is known is that while the bills appear heavy- they are actually hollow and lightweight and made out of thin rods of bone and keratin. Limited Edition Size 250. (5.5"L X 6.75"H)
  • Herend Reserve Collection Covered Urn

    Herend Reserve Collection Covered Urn
The story reveals how one day Baroness Rothschild went for a stroll in her garden in Vienna and lost the pearl necklace she was wearing. An exhaustive search by her staff yielded nothing. A few days later, a gardener noticed the birds were excitedly chirping and fluttering around something and he went over to investigate. That is when he discovered the birds had taken a liking to the Baroness’ necklace which was caught on a tree branch In 1860, this story inspired the creation of the Rothschild Bird pattern which was so well-received that soon similar bird designs were being produced by almost every major European porcelain manufacturer. With this introduction we celebrate Rothschild Bird and all of its many moods with a covered urn featuring all 12 motifs as well as all of the border colors that have been presented over the years. Available in a limited edition of 250, the urn is inscribed with a special commemorative anniversary logo which reads “Rothschild Bird 150th Anniversary”. Limited Edition 250. Herend Reserve Collection: Horse Bust
Quiet dignity, abundant grace and unbridled spirit are adroitly captured in Herend’s porcelain portrayal of one of society’s best-loved animals. Although horses’ earliest contact with man was around 30,000 B.C., domestication wasn’t seen until 3000 B.C. In China where horse-drawn carriages were used in wars. Horses became a popular subject in Roman art, and they gained further recognition by cowboys and American Indians who relied heavily on them for survival. The word “equus” – meaning horse – originated in ancient Greece and means “quickness.” Seventeen craftspeople give form to Herend’s magnificent horse bust, which requires three days to paint. Limited Edition 250. (11.5"L X 11"H)
  • Herend Tesserae Tortoise
    scullyandscully.com
    Herend Tesserae Tortoise
As much as the strength of porcelain is celebrated, the wrong trajectory as a piece falls out of an artist’s hand can still yield broken shards. A natural hazard of life at the Herend manufactory has consequently inspired the dramatic Tesserae Tortoise (available in a limited edition of 250). Taking its name from the small pieces of stone, glass or ceramic used in mosaics, thirty-eight different Herend patterns create a mosaic-like composition on the tortoise’s shell. A crossroads of east meets west and past & present: four chinoiserie patterns anchor the center stripe of the turtle’s back while flanking the center tile featuring the Sèvres Petites Roses pattern which takes inspiration from French artistry. A medley of fruits and flowers dances around the rest of the shell. The tortoise himself is painted in the new, complementary key lime fishnet which draws out the subtle nuances of the many greens. It takes 5 different Herend artists a combined total of 19 hours to paint the entire figurine. Limited Edition 250. (8.75"L X 3"H)
  • Herend Reserve Collection Swirl Hen

    Herend Reserve Collection Swirl Hen
While the hands are busy, the artistic mind wanders to dreams of a variation on a theme of fishnet. Not quite a revolt, but after 153 years of painting the fishnet pattern, the creative team at Herend wanted to spread their wings. A chance to make a change at once both subtle and bold where a quick glance would still reflect the rhythmic pattern of fishnet but further scrutiny would reveal an altered state. Similar to the way the internal mirrors of a kaleidoscope adjust reality and reflect things back in a new geometric fashion, the artists at Herend pushed fishnet to the furthest corners of their imagination to see what they could find. Many new patterns were created and two were deemed dramatic enough to make their debut. It was a rooster figurine in 1858 which first enticed a painter to dress a figurine in Herend’s signature fishnet pattern. Of course, the ensuing fame only added to the rooster’s bravado around the farmyard. With word of two new patterns making their grand entrance in 2011, the long-suffering hens marched on the manufactory and demanded equal time in the spotlight. They are proud to feature one of their own in a dramatic debut of swirls and curls and kaleidoscope dreams. Limited Edition 100. (5"L X 7.25"H)
  • Herend Reserve Collection Carnival Woman with Mask
    scullyandscully.com
Herend Reserve Collection Carnival Woman with Mask
Imre Schrammel, who served as artistic advisor to the Herend manufactory for a time, was inspired to design the carnival figurine series after experiencing Venetian Carnival first-hand. Schrammel, a world-renown ceramic artist, described the collaborative process with the Herend artists who bring to life his craft as that of a composer who has his work performed by a superlative orchestra. Similar to the Venetian revelers whose costumes become more elaborate every year, Schrammel has an appreciation for what Herend artists can accomplish using his Carnival series as a blank canvas. This year, the mysterious man and the enigmatic woman have been transformed into a walking celebration of the 160th anniversary of the Queen Victoria pattern. Dramatic green stripes highlight peonies and butterflies while only a tell-tale scarf hints at the reveler behind the mask. Limited Edition Size 100. (16"H)

Many new patterns were created and two were deemed dramatic enough to make their debut. He is certainly proud enough to carry the premiere on his shoulders and, yet, it wasn’t just his cocky countenance that made the rooster the obvious choice for the kaleidoscope treatment. Rather, it was an ability to close the circle since it was a long-lost relative, a rooster figurine in 1858, which first enticed a painter to dress a figurine in Herend’s signature fishnet pattern.
