Long before Yohji and Rei arrived in 1980's Paris with their battalions of tattered black ragamuffins, Kansai Yamamoto was already established as one of the city's most provocative and exuberant designers. Having more in common with show men such as Mugler and Montana, Kansai brought color, drama and joy to the runways of Paris. This extraordinary anime inspired Super Hero wool sweater has an incongruous palette of mustard, black, white and violet which works beautifully. The black chenille yarn becomes a textural counterpoint to the flat wool knits used elsewhere. The shoulder pads are likely conical bust pads which have been crocheted into an optical swirling pattern. From these oversized epaulets fall chenille tails in black chenille trimmed violet. Pac men or alien heads float across the chest in black and white while graduated dotted paddles lurk below. A pair of slash pockets is added (for practicality!). Kansai Yamamoto brought his unique cultural influences into a garment which hybridized "his" cutting edge long before later designers began referencing manga, anime and the cartoonish aspects of Japanese pop culture. This "sweater" has such an overall, graphically bizarre and mental presence which makes it so special, unique and highly collectible. France 1980s. Excellent condition.
