Vitra Miniatures Collection: Eames® Plywood Elephant
Charles and Ray Eames were fascinated by elephants. Many images of these gentle giants are found in Charles' photographic documentations of Indian culture and the circus world. The Eames Plywood Elephant (1945) is among the plywood pieces designed by the Eameses and one of the most difficult to produce. In the early 1940s, they successfully developed an innovative method for molding plywood into three-dimensional shapes, which they used to produce a wide range of furniture and sculptural objects. To render the Elephant, tight angles and compound curves require a sophisticated mastery of plywood technology. It was so complicated that the full-size Plywood Elephant never went into production. Only two prototypes were made, both of which were displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in 1945 and 1946. Today only one known model remains in the possession of the Eames family. Vitra Design Museum has reproduced the Plywood Elephant at a scale of 1:6. True to the original pieces in structure and, the miniatures are precision-crafted, making them a thoughtful gift for a furniture lover or design professional. Each miniature comes handsomely packaged in a wood box with an informational booklet. Made in Poland.

    Vitra Gueridon Bas Table
About the Designer Jean Prouve France (1904 - 1984) Jean Prouvé, born 1901 in Paris, was trained as a metal artisan under Emile Robert, Enghien und Szabo in Paris. In 1924 he opened his own workshop in Nancy and began to produce his first furnishings made of formed sheet steel in 1925. He was a founding member of the Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM) in 1930. In the following year he established his own manufacturing firm, Les Ateliers Jean Prouvé. During the 1930s, the company produced numerous furniture designs, as well as some of the first prefabricated architectural elements, including components for the Maison du Peuple in Clichy (in collaboration with the architects Beaudoin and Lods), whose steel-and-glass structure attracted a great deal of attention. Due to the scarcity of steel during the Second World War, Prouvé constructed wood furniture and developed simple houses made out of prefabricated parts. Active in the French Résistance, Prouvé was elected mayor of Nancy after the city was liberated. He designed and constructed residential buildings for the homeless. In 1947 he established the Maxéville factory, a facility of 25,000 square meters in which furnishings, prefabricated homes and schools were produced by 200 employees. In order to meet the increasing demand for furniture, this division came under the direction of Steph Simon as a separate division with exclusive marketing rights in 1949. Due to disagreements with the majority shareholders, Jean Prouvé left the company in 1953. He designed and built his own residence in 1954. After working as head of the construction office of the Compagnie Industrielle de Matériel de Transport (CIMT) in Paris between 1957-68, Prouvé ran his own architectural consulting firm in Paris from 1968-84. He taught as professor at the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers (CNAM) from 1957-70. As chairman of the jury for the Centre Pompidou architectural competition in 1971, he played a major role in selecting the design of Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers. Between 1980-84, Prouvé again turned his attention to the further development of his furniture designs. He died in Nancy in 1984. In many of his works, Jean Prouvé achieved the goal of uniting functional requirements, the honest use of materials and economical concerns with the complex demands of mass production. Beginning in 2002, in close collaboration with the Prouvé family, Vitra has devoted itself to the re-edition of numerous designs by this great constructeur. In the early 1940s, Jean Prouvé began to work more extensively with wood. The Guerdon Bas table has a heavy top in oak veneer that rests on 3 solid oak legs. These elements are joined together by a construction made out of bent sheet metal. The Guerdon Bas is also available in dark stained oak, harking back to an original version made of tropical wood called 'Table Africaine'.Dimensions: Overall Height - Top to Bottom: 13.5 Inches. Verner Panton's career as a designer first peaked at the end of the 1950s. With a series of furniture featuring basic geometrical shapes he pre-empted Pop Art ideas and yet with the base frames clearly adopted the elegance of Scandinavian Modernism. The best-known models from the series are the Cone Chairs and Heart Cone Chairs, originally designed for a restaurant. With the C1 armchair created around the same time, Verner Panton for the first time chose a section of a sphere. On swivel bearings and slightly tilted, the upholstered seat shell is astonishingly comfortable – both for relaxed sitting leaning back and for upright sitting. The C1 can be integrated into private apartments, hotels or reception areas, cuts a fine figure in larger groups. Also available in leather.

    Vitra Jean Prouve Side Chair
Powder-coated sheet steel and tubular steel frame. Seat and backrest in untreated oak or oak with dark stain. Varnished oak for natural wood effect. Design is the process by which almost all objects in Vitra's surroundings are instilled with a specific design and function - from cars to paper clips, from clothing to chairs. And design does not just mean giving things a shape. Design creates the basis which enables things to function in the desired manner. It is a process in which complementary but often mutually contradictory requirements have to be met (comfort, technology, ergonomics, ecology, economics, aesthetics). Design can be successful only when the balance of all these factors is attained. Once in the factory, Vitra staff manufacture furniture to precise standards, individually ensuring the quality of each product. Vitra has been certified for DIN EN ISO 9001: 2000. Vitra's focus on quality does not end at the factory door - they believe that providing clients with exceptional service is just as important as manufacturing furniture. In order to make certain Vitra clients enjoy consistently high quality in all Vitra products, they have set up their own test center which monitors products against criteria that are far more stringent than the statutory standards. Ergonomics is an applied science that studies the relationship between human beings and machines. Vitra produces furniture that responds to the ergonomic requirements of the body and as a consequence has a positive effect on health and well-being. All Vitra products (except for the experimental series Vitra Edition) have been tested by independent institutions. They comply with prescribed standards under the European Directive on VDU Work and are marked with the GS seal (= Gepr fte Sicherheit or Tested Safety, seal of the independent certification company LGA). Vitra's contribution to ecological conservation does not stop with a close examination of materials and processes. All aspects of the company's work involve ecological thinking. In 1991, Vitra set up an internal ecology committee to discuss environmental topics. This team identifies new tasks, and its project teams work together to find solutions. Vitra uses only non-CFC foams and adhesives free of toxic solvents; all possible materials are recycled. Wherever possible, Vitra uses recycled materials. Vitra's goal during production is to minimize noise and emission levels as well as to reduce waste. Packaging materials are kept to a minimum and re-used as often as possible. Jean Prouve collection. Vitra - Davy Table
The Vitra Davy Table is a robust table to be used outside. Its construction is made of anodized aluminium sheet and aluminium tube, which ensures high stability despite of the low weight. The young Swiss designer Michel Charlot developed the Davy Table as complementary piece for the legendary, Hans Coray designed Landi Chair. This is how the Davy Table and the Landi Chair perfectly suit each other, but other chairs and tables combinations. The weatherproof Vitra Davy Table suits in very different places, despite of (or because of) its technical, untreated looking material and thanks to its compact proportions. The Davy Table has a punched hole for sunshades in the middle of the table top; up to four tables are stackable and its four pads are height adjustable if the ground isn’t flat. Vitra produces the table top and the frame of the Davy Table out of aluminium sheet with a matt anodized surface. The legs-support is made of powder-coated zinc-die casting, while the stacking protection and the pads are made of light grey TPE. Practical against tilting: The height of the single table legs can be adjusted by turning the pads.

    Vitra - Landi Chair
The Landi Chair from Hans Coray is a masterpiece, which is still trend-setting today. The classic piece is produced again by Vitra, 75 years after its first presentation on a Swiss exposition in 1939. The Landi Chair dates back to design’s origins. Hans Coray, a Swiss humanist and artist, designed the aluminium chair as official seat for the outside of the Swiss Exposition of 1939. The graduated Romanist and auto-didactic among furniture designers made a chair, which was weatherproof and as weightless as comfortable. It is still trend-setting because of the efficient use of materials and the functional elegance. As a classic piece of modernity, the Vitra Landi Chair reached a fix place in design’s history and in numerous international design museums. Vitra Landi Chair: A pioneer’s achievement of modernity The Landi Chair uses the technical advantages of aluminium processing as no other model of that time does. The austere and elegant design is adapted to the industrial production and processing of the material and it entered the history as masterpiece of modernity. The sear of the Vitra Landi Chair doesn’t only follow the contour of the sitting person, but it is also shaped in its cross direction, unlike the plywood seats of Alvar Aalto. A three-dimension formed seat, whose comfort is still raised by the flexibility of the aluminium sheet, emerged this way for the first time. The seat has 91 punched holes, which give the Landi Chair its characteristic look; they reduce the weight of the chair and also let rain water drain. Hans Coray used aluminium in a different way for the base of the Landi Chair: As extruded section, which is weightless and also stable because of the c-like cross section. The bent aluminium profiles form a pair of legs with armrest and – connected by two thin tubes – each one and they are the base together. The punched seat of the Vitra Landi Chair floats on this base only supported at four points. The Landi Chair therewith introduced a constructive principle, which was systematized and perfected by Charles and Ray Eames some years later and which is indispensable in furniture design today: The seat and backrest bowl which rests in a self-carrying base. The weatherproof Landi Chair is produced industrially according to the original design of 1939 today, and it is vertically stackable. The matt anodized surface of the material offers the characteristic, silver-shimmering presence to this classic piece by Vitra.

The most exceptional material used is a hexagonal table top out of polished aluminium. Alexander Girard, famous as big designer of fabrics, colours, patterns and textures, equipped it with a tree-dimensional triangle pattern, which is able to mirror the incoming light as geometric pattern on the walls.
