    Verner Panton’s career as a designer first peaked at the end of the 1950s. With a series of furniture featuring basic geometrical shapes he pre-empted Pop Art ideas and yet with the base frames clearly adopted the elegance of Scandinavian Modernism. The best-known models from the series are the Cone Chairs and Heart Cone Chairs, originally designed for a restaurant. With the C1 armchair created around the same time, Verner Panton for the first time chose a section of a sphere. On swivel bearings and slightly tilted, the upholstered seat shell is astonishingly comfortable – both for relaxed sitting leaning back and for upright sitting. The C1 can be integrated into private apartments, hotels or reception areas, cuts a fine figure in larger groups. Also available in leather.

    The Organic Chair is a comfortable small reading chair and was made in 1940 as a contribution to the New York MoMA's "Organic Design in Home Furnishings" competition. Formally speaking it was ahead of its time, but owing to the lack of manufacturing techniques, never went into series production. It was not until after 1950 that it became possible to manufacture larger quantities of organically shaped seat shells and market them.     The Jill chair is the first cooperation of Vitra and Alfredo Häberli. Inspired by the beginnings of plywood deformation, Jill sounds the borders of this technology out.     With the Basel Chair Jasper Morrison renews the category of the plain classic wooden chair, like it has been industrially produced for the last 100 years. The Basel Chair offers a corrected seating comfort and in its two versions also a special optical attraction thanks to this material combination. The harmonically balanced proportions catch the viewers eye, but the chair only reveals innovations after detailed examination: Seat and back rest of the Basel Chair are made of plastic and they can therefore be better formed organically, structured in the surface and made thinner contrasting plain wood chairs, as a result, they are even more flexible. The designer Jasper Morrison was oriented by classic wooden chairs for his design, changing them according to his idea: “My Basel Chair for example, leans on an ancient, classic form of the German Frankfurt chair.     The Organic Conference is a classic piece of furniture, which isn’t really a classic: The chair by the design legends Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen couldn’t be produced in series because of a lack of technique in the 1940s. It was vitalized by Vitra in 2006 for the first time. Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen created a complete series of Oranic Chairs in different editions for the competition “Organic Design in Home Furnishing” of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 1941. The designs were futuristic formally, but they weren’t produced because of a lack of technique then. The organic seat could only be produced and distributed in bigger amounts later, so were the Eames Plastic Chair by Charles & Ray Eames or the Tulip Chair by Eero Saarinen. Vitra and the Vitra Design Museum vitalized the classic piece in 2006 with the first serial production of the Organic Chair, the Organic Highback with high backrest and headrest followed in 2008. The shape of the seats of the Organic Chairs is adapted to the seat demands of the human body. The user sits in a lower, slightly backwards inclined position in the reading chairs Organic Chair and Organic Highback, while the Organic Conference is slightly higher and more upright, supporting sitting at a table. The organic shape of and the comfortable cushions ensure exceptional sitting comfort. Vitra produces the Organic Chairs out of ash wood with polyurethane foam cushions.     As early as the 1960s, cardboard furniture emerged as a cheap and light alternative to traditional furniture. At that time, slotting and folding as well as supports were used to ensure that the cardboard could bear sufficient weight. Nevertheless, cardboard furniture hardly had a chance against plastic furniture, which was equally light. Frank O. Gehry discovered a process which enabled cardboard furniture to be made in massive blocks – cardboard sculptures, as it were. »One day I saw a stack of corrugated cardboard in my office; it was the material I used to build my architectural models. And I started playing around with it, gluing it together and then cutting it into shape with a handsaw and a pocket-knife«. Gehry called the material made of corrugated cardboard glued in layers that ran at right angles to each other »Edge Board«. In the years that followed, Charles and Ray Eames concentrated on developing a process that enabled plywood to be shaped as they wanted. The club chair B3, known today as »Wassily« was also created in connection with this renowned institution. Lt is the first piece of seating furniture in the history of design to be made from seamless, precision-drawn tubular steel. Lts transparency and visible structure are expressions of the stringent aesthetic approach that prevailed in architecture and design following World War I. Marcel Breuer replaced the massive upholstered corpus of the traditional club chair with a skeleton-like construction made out of bent steel tubing, thereby overcoming the physical weightiness of conventional seating. He exploited the elasticity of the material, complementing it with tautly stretched fabric strips of reinforced canvas for the seat and back.     The furniture making up the indoor-outdoor group goes back to an idea by Alexander Girard and Eero Saarinen, who were looking for furnishings to harmonize with the house they had just completed for Irvin Miller. Girard, one of whose interests as an architect was landscape gardening, complained that though there was a good choice of furniture for interiors, there was nothing to grace attractive patios – and no decent garden furniture. Charles Eames became preoccupied with this problem until one day during a flight he came up with the idea of an aluminium frame construction combined with a material »seat«. He wanted to develop a shape following the natural lines of the body, not however as a hard shell, but as a resilient length of material stretched between two supports which trace the body’s natural form. A narrow plastic strip extending the length of the material acts as reinforcement. The material is held in place by insertion into slits on the frame’s outer edge. Experiments with different covering materials later resulted in an upholstered sandwich construction consisting of two layers of »Nauga hide« with a thin filling of vinyl-foam and vinylwadding stitched at intervals of 1 7/8 inches using a high-frequency welding technique. Originally conceived for outside use, the first aluminium easy chairs to be mass produced, are today used solely in interiors. Nelson compared the Coconut Chair with an eight-piece-sliced coconut, in which he turned the colour of the coconut: The outer seat bucket made of plastic is white, the one-piece pad is available in different colours. The original version was made of a bent steel sheet, whose foam rubber padding was offered with imitation leather, material, or leather covers. The frame was made out of steel tubes which were bent around the shell. Those gave the viewer's eye the expression, that the frame tightened a sweeping, suspended form, and fixed them on the floor.
