The original rug was intended to represent an embracing welcome to the community who gathered in the space, with the nesting circles in the pattern referencing traditional symbolism for the cycle of life and eternity. The rug design was also conceived of as a metaphor for a basket. The banding and radiating linear elements evoke the weave of a basket, which, similar to a community center, relies on interwoven individual members for strength and is a vessel for holding belongings together. notNeutral City Plate - Cairo
Part of our first collection of City Plates. The theme of the first collection is City as Gateway. The theme of the first collection is City as Gateway and the cities chosen are Los Angeles, Shanghai, Cairo and Berlin. With this theme we asked: how is each city dealing with the effects of agglomeration as its population begins to reach critical mass? Cairo. Cairo is Africa’s largest city, as well as the cultural center of the Middle East. It lies at the center of three continents, serving as the primary gateway between Europe, Africa, and Asia. Cairo lies along the banks and on the small islands of the majestic Nile river, which runs dramatically through the center of the plate design. The large white edge of the plate represents the vast desert in surprisingly close proximity, just outside the city’s border. The 1863 completion of the Suez Canal brought a large number of Westerners, along with significant investment. It also brought a re-imagining of the city center, and using the standard design of European cities – especially Paris – Cairo transformed into the modern megalopolis it is today. These porcelain plates measure 12” across, with each city’s downtown core printed on a black background. Key buildings are represented with persimmon icons, while rivers and public spaces are shown in blue and green. Each plate is boxed and includes a key to the buildings and spaces included on the plate. 12" diameter. Dishwasher safe. Boxed with Printed Key.

Los Angeles. The Los Angeles plate design, ringed with freeways, shows that what used to be labeled ‘sprawl’, is now being looked at as a model for modern development. A deep green mass represents Dodger Stadium and Elysian Park; and vivid red icons represent key buildings in the city’s historic core. Los Angeles, with the port of Long Beach, is the largest port in North America, and is vital to trade with Asia and the Pacific Rim. The city, thanks to its youth and love of the automobile, has also developed in a singular way that runs counter to the traditional condensed urban cores of east coast cities. As cities’ populations grow and cities themselves drift towards each other, the multiple city-center approach of Los Angeles is becoming more and more familiar. These porcelain plates measure 12” across, with each city’s downtown core printed on a black background. Key buildings are represented with persimmon icons, while rivers and public spaces are shown in blue and green. Though the reunification of East and West Berlin has not been easy, the fall of the Wall has led to the sharing of ideas, art, and the shape of Europe’s post-Cold War future. Berlin is consistently heralded as a modern marvel, and is regarded as one of the world’s great showcases of architectural freedom and expression. notNeutral City Plates-Collection 1
Collection 1 of four City Plates the theme of which is City as Gateway: Los Angeles, Shanghai, Cairo and Berlin. The four featured cities - Los Angeles, Shanghai, Cairo, and Berlin - were chosen by our design team for their reputations as gateways, and for the way each is dealing with the effects of agglomeration as its population begins to reach critical mass. These porcelain plates measure 12” across, with each city’s downtown core printed on a black background. Key buildings are represented with persimmon icons, while rivers and public spaces are shown in vivid blue and green. The plates’ designs portray a bold, graphic representation of four distinctly fascinating cities. Berlin, Shanghai, Los Angeles and Cairo. 12" diameter Porcelain. Individually boxed with Key.
