notNeutral Garden Plate - Central Park: Great Lawn
The Garden Plate collection features notable urban parks and gardens from around the world. While the color palette and graphic language coordinate with our existing City Plate collection (so you can intermix), the Garden Plates focus on the contrast between the organic elements of the highlighted park and the surrounding urban context. The first series showcases New York City's Central Park, the first large-scale (843 acres) public space in the United States, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in 1858. Each of the four plates highlights a different segment of the Park: the Sheep Meadow, the Great Lawn, the Reservoir, and the North Meadow. Each plate articulates the park's intricate network of roads and bridle paths, trees, and bodies of water to convey the landscape design and to trigger memories of places visitors may have strolled, ridden bikes, played softball, or picnicked. Garden Plate – Central Park: Great Lawn. Great Lawn – Situated at the geographical center of the park, the Great Lawn is one of the most famous greens in the world. This lush carpet is the stage for countless softball games, music performances, and picnics, but it is also an ideal spot for sunbathing or just admiring the park’s forest of more than 20,000 trees. The nearby Belvedere Castle also offers panoramic views of other landmarks in this area, including Turtle Pond, the densely wooded 30-acre Ramble, and the Delacorte Theater. As the summer home of the Public Theater, the Delacorte attracts an international audience of over 100,000 for free outdoor stage performances of Shakespeare and other classic works. Another major attraction in this area is the picturesque Lake, which is populated by rowboats from spring through fall. Other features include the Conservatory Water and Kerbs Boathouse, which is a popular site to launch model boats. Also of note is Strawberry Fields, the memorial to John Lennon in the area adjacent to the stately Dakota apartment building, where he made his home. This section of the Park is flanked to the west by the American Museum of Natural History and Hayden Planetarium, and to the east by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. 12" diameter. Dishwasher safe. The banding and radiating linear elements evoke the weave of a basket, which, similar to a community center, relies on interwoven individual members for strength and is a vessel for holding belongings together. Reinterpreted with warm and vibrant colors, and made available to you in 2 generous sizes, our Eccentric rugs will create a convivial centerpiece for any room in your home. 100% wool, hand tufted. notNeutral City Plate - San Francisco
Part of the sixth collection of City Plates. This Collection honors the American Dream. The sixth series of cities is presented on a white background with the addition of topographic details delineated in taupe. Each of the cities in the series - Boston, San Francisco, Hollywood, Palm Springs - has inspired the spirit of the American Dream. Whether it was freedom from religious persecution, the promise of fortune and fame, or the desire for a golden age of leisure, that instigated the proliferation of these four cities in particular, they are all landmarks -historically and architecturally- that represent the persistence of a national ethos that is full of ambition and optimism. San Francisco - The California Gold Rush put San Francisco on the map for tens of thousands of Americans and immigrants from around the world who were in search of buried treasure. What was once a small settlement became a boomtown connected to the rest of world by sea and rail. The pioneering and entrepreneurial outlook that helped San Francisco recover from the devastating earthquake and fire of 1906 is a quality that is still palpable in the city today. These porcelain plates measure 12” across. Key buildings are represented with persimmon icons, while bodies of water and public spaces are shown in blue and green. Each plate is boxed and includes a key to the buildings and spaces included on the plate. 12" diameter. Dishwasher safe. Boxed with Printed Key.

Part of our fourth collection of City Plates. The theme for this fourth collection is Empire Building. The theme for this fourth collection is Empire Building and takes a look at the global impact of Empires on settlement patterns, national borders, cultural identity, and modern city form. These four ancient cities are compared at their height with their modern cityscapes today. Mexico City - pop. 19.6 million. The first incarnation of Mexico City was as Tenochtitlan during the Aztec Empire. The historic core, the area in white in the center of the plate, is inspired by Aztec city planning and overlaps the Baroque city planning that was brought to the Americas by the Spanish. Spanish colonialists expanded their empire though conquests in the Americas and brought an entirely new form of architecture to Mexico City. This is seen in the very Baroque designs along Paseo de la Reforma (in green) which tells of the city’s transformation along its central extension. The great Chapultepec Park (in green) at the one end houses both the Natural History Museum and the National Anthropology Museum (both in red) stand in congruence with the great urban respite farther down the Paseo de la Reforma, the Alameda Central (in green). On the other side of that, the Zocalo ends this central corridor. These porcelain plates measure 12” across, with each city’s downtown core printed on a black background. Key buildings are represented with persimmon icons, while rivers and public spaces are shown in blue and green. Three of the new cities were at one time the seat of government; one became its nation’s capital in 1960. All remain centers of economic power, cultural leaders, and symbols of their country’s national identity. Brasilia - pop 2.5 million. Brasilia, a very new city whose 41-month construction began in 1956, was inaugurated in April 1960, when the government migrated from Brazil’s two former capitals, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador. Brasilia is futuristic and ambitious; it was principally designed by Lucia Costa and Oscar Niemeyer in what has been termed the -Pilot Plan’. A huge influx of migrants instantly created a larger city than any planner had ever envisioned, and continues to keep Brasilia on the map as a growing city. A percentage of all Brasilia City Plate sales will be donated to the Amazon Conservation Team (ACT), a nonprofit group that helps displaced local tribes protect their forest, culture, and ancient system of healing that uses the forest’s abundant botanical resources; at the same time, the tribes are offered job opportunities, education, and clean water. notNeutral City Plate - Las Vegas
Part of our second collection of City Plates. The theme of the first collection is Culture and Capital(ism). The theme of this second collection is Culture and Capital(ism) and the cities chosen are New Orleans and Washington, D.C., both rich in history and culture, and the booming megalopolises of Las Vegas and Dubai. With this theme we asked: how does a capital investment in manufacturing culture impact city form? Las Vegas – pop. 1.8 million. The capital of sin. Compared to New Orleans – and most other American cities – the amount of capital flowing into Las Vegas is staggering. According to the latest estimates, Las Vegas gaming revenues in 2006 totaled about $6.5 billion. Big dollars mean big development; the Vegas building boom is shown on the plate in red. The mammoth scale of Las Vegas’ casinos is stunning when compared to the White House or the Capitol building seen on the Washington, D.C. plate. The glitzy Vegas strip is shown in white and water is rendered in blue. Other plates in the collection feature large expanses of natural blue water, but the only notable water in Las Vegas resides in the pools and fountains dotted along the Strip. The amount of green space found in the Vegas plate design is also miniscule. Lacking in large, public, outdoor spaces, the green area does not represent public parks; it instead denotes private golf courses. These porcelain plates measure 12” across, with each city’s downtown core printed on a black background. Key buildings are represented with persimmon icons, while rivers and public spaces are shown in blue and green. The theme of the first collection is City as Gateway and the cities chosen are Los Angeles, Shanghai, Cairo and Berlin. With this theme we asked: how is each city dealing with the effects of agglomeration as its population begins to reach critical mass? Shanghai. Shanghai, the largest commercial and financial power in China, is one of the largest ports in Asia. Its central location on China’s Pacific coast has made the city a major gateway between China and the Western world. The city’s urban center has a unique organic form, caused in part by the wide curve of the Huangpu River, which bisects the city and comes across as a dramatic swath of blue on the plate. The areas allotted to foreign powers after the Opium Wars – the British, French, and Americans – reflect the grid-form of traditional Western city planning. These porcelain plates measure 12” across, with each city’s downtown core printed on a black background. Key buildings are represented with persimmon icons, while rivers and public spaces are shown in blue and green. The dramatic white band on the plate marks where the Berlin Wall once stood. Though the reunification of East and West Berlin has not been easy, the fall of the Wall has led to the sharing of ideas, art, and the shape of Europe’s post-Cold War future. Berlin is consistently heralded as a modern marvel, and is regarded as one of the world’s great showcases of architectural freedom and expression. The theme of the first collection is City as Gateway and the cities chosen are Los Angeles, Shanghai, Cairo and Berlin. With this theme we asked: how is each city dealing with the effects of agglomeration as its population begins to reach critical mass? Los Angeles. The Los Angeles plate design, ringed with freeways, shows that what used to be labeled -sprawl’, is now being looked at as a model for modern development. A deep green mass represents Dodger Stadium and Elysian Park; and vivid red icons represent key buildings in the city’s historic core. Los Angeles, with the port of Long Beach, is the largest port in North America, and is vital to trade with Asia and the Pacific Rim. The city, thanks to its youth and love of the automobile, has also developed in a singular way that runs counter to the traditional condensed urban cores of east coast cities. As cities’ populations grow and cities themselves drift towards each other, the multiple city-center approach of Los Angeles is becoming more and more familiar. These porcelain plates measure 12” across, with each city’s downtown core printed on a black background. The theme for this fourth collection is Empire Building and takes a look at the global impact of Empires on settlement patterns, national borders, cultural identity, and modern city form. These four ancient cities are compared at their height with their modern cityscapes today. Tokyo - pop. 33.2 million. Tokyo began as a settlement named Edo (noted in white), which by the mid-1600s was the center of a shogun powerbase that had a nationwide military presence. In 1869 Emperor Meiji renamed the city and claimed it as the seat of the Japanese Empire. Twice left in ruins, after the Great Kanto earthquake in 1923 and extensive firebombing in WWII, the city rebuilt itself, peaking in the 1980s during its real estate and technology boom. Tokyo has continued to build upon itself, building on top old ruins to make way for the new in a city with intense density. With this theme we asked: how does a capital investment in manufacturing culture impact city form? New Orleans - pop. 485,000 (2006); 1.4 million (pre-Katrina) America’s capital of culture – devastated by floods during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The massive scale of the flooding is frightfully apparent; the white area on this particular plate represents the parts of the city that were flooded. The Mississippi River curves across the plate in a swath of blue; Audubon Park – on the river’s bank – and City Park, adjacent to Lake Pontchartrain, are rendered in green. While two other cities immortalized in the series – Las Vegas and Dubai – are experiencing record influxes of capital and growth, New Orleans is still struggling. One of America’s richest cultural bastions, New Orleans is still in need of a tremendous capital infusion. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this plate will go toward the recovery and rebuilding of 1300 acres of City Park that experienced serious damage to grounds, trees, infrastructure and facilities. The theme of the first collection is City as Gateway and the cities chosen are Los Angeles, Shanghai, Cairo and Berlin. With this theme we asked: how is each city dealing with the effects of agglomeration as its population begins to reach critical mass? Cairo. Cairo is Africa’s largest city, as well as the cultural center of the Middle East. It lies at the center of three continents, serving as the primary gateway between Europe, Africa, and Asia. Cairo lies along the banks and on the small islands of the majestic Nile river, which runs dramatically through the center of the plate design. The large white edge of the plate represents the vast desert in surprisingly close proximity, just outside the city’s border. The 1863 completion of the Suez Canal brought a large number of Westerners, along with significant investment. It also brought a re-imagining of the city center, and using the standard design of European cities – especially Paris – Cairo transformed into the modern megalopolis it is today. Many refer to it as Australia’s -sporting and cultural capital’. Founded in 1835, Melbourne quickly grew into a major financial hub, owing in part to its strategic location on Port Phillip. Its huge global influence on finance, trade, politics, and culture has been felt for more than a century, and it is seen around the world as the symbol of the American Dream. It is the most densely populated city on the globe. This fact alone gives New York its absolutely unique urban form. With this theme we asked: how does a capital investment in manufacturing culture impact city form? Dubai – pop. 1.5 million. A city where man-made islands are fashioned in the shape of palm trees and plans for the world’s first rotating skyscraper are underway – Dubai is Las Vegas on steroids. The city’s erratic, spiraling layout is the combined result of a rich history that dates to at least 3000 B.C. and the contemporary drive to create and contain the perfect artificial environment. The Dubai plate is distinguished by the vast blue expanse of the Persian Gulf that is kept at bay by the city’s strange, mesmerizing form, a form that owes its unique patterns to the current, unceasing explosion of commerce and trade. Along the shore is Jebel Ali, the largest manmade harbour in the world. With 67 berths it is the biggest port in the Middle East. The areas in red depict highlights of the robust architectural development in the city, including the Burj Dubai, which became the world’s largest skyscraper on July 21, 2007. This former Roman outpost was established as the seat of British power by William the Conqueror. The city underwent two major catastrophes in rapid succession: a plague in 1665 and a fire in 1666 that wiped out 85% of its buildings. By the age of industrialization, London was not only a thoroughly modern city, but also the seat of a vast colonial empire that served as model for the development patterns of its new settlements. Today, London is a sprawling city, large enough to accommodate strikingly modern architecture along with relics of the past, an evolution of city form that writes its history into the urban landscape. Founded in 1790 along the banks of the Potomac, the planned city’s layout was influenced by the Baroque style (the prominent style of the day for planned cities in the U.S.) and drafted by Pierre Charles L’Enfant, a French architect who arrived with Gen. Lafayette during the Revolution. The National Mall, rendered in bright green, is expansive, taking up as much space as the main stretch of the Las Vegas Strip. The Potomac River, depicted in blue, bisects the plate and is the border between Washington, D.C. and Virginia. The green areas along the Virginia side of the plate are Rock Creek Park, which is twice the size of Central Park, and the enormous. Arlington National Cemetery. The Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Capitol, and the White House are represented in red, but appear tiny when compared to the mammoth structures seen in Vegas and Dubai.
