Thos. Moser Cumberland Stool-25" seat height in Cherry/Ash Qty. 2
The Cumberland Stool represents the only stool in the Thos. Moser lineup with only three legs. Designed to be versatile in its application; whether as a seat for a meal or a perch for a guitar session, the stool can be sat in from any of the sides - it is up to the user to decide. The seat itself is simply the sum of three equal parts. Each of the three seat segments is machined to be exactly as the next, from a single board to ensure a color match. The three like pieces are then joined with solid wood splines. This joinery serves both a structural and aesthetic function. The exposed joinery approximates the finger joints in the other pieces of the Cumberland collection, establishing its visual cohesion. The legs of the stools are turned from White Ash and joined with an exposed wedged tenon at the top of the seat.

    thosmoser.com
Thos. Moser Crescent High Stool -25" seat (Cherry) Qty. 3
Tom Moser accepted the challenge to design a stool whose overall presence is understated, is simple in form, and is truly representative of all that is Moser - from the hallmark use of turned legs and stretchers made of ash to the visible and embraced joinery via wedged through-tenons joining the legs to the cherry or walnut seat. The Crescent High Stool uses a minimum of finely tooled shapes to achieve its airy, graceful stature. Topped with a backless, steam-bent seat, this stool can be accessed from the front, back, or either side and it tucks neatly beneath a counter when not in use. Light weight and exceptional durability make this stool suitable for everyday use. About Stool Heights: We offer three standard stool seat heights: 25" stools for standard 36" high counters; 27" stools for taller counters; and 31" stools for a 42" bar height.

A gradual reverse tapering of the front legs gives weight to the bottom of these chairs while terminating gracefully at the top. This slight taper is echoed in the back design, which resembles a Wright-style stained-glass window. The armchair features a visible through joint on the armrest. Mortise-and-tenon joints are glued and pinned to ensure a secure fit for generations of use.

    Thos. Moser Windward Bookcase
Offered in 36-inch high sections with two adjustable shelves, Windward Bookcases can be stacked, set side-by-side or separated to flank a fireplace or doorway. From Father to Son There is a very interesting story behind the Windward Bookcase, which dates back to the 1920s. While growing up in Chicgao, Tom Moser had to endure the loss of both of his parents before finishing high school. His father Joseph Moser, a pressman at the Chicago Tribune, died on Tom's eighteenth birthday in 1953. Shortly thereafter Tom had quite school, left home, and joined the air force. When Tom came back some years later, there was almost nothing what so ever left from his mother and father. He had some little coffee cups from his mother, and nothing from his father. Then in the late 1980s, Tom's uncle Walter gave Tom a bookcase which had been made by Tom's father as a gift for his sister, Tom's aunt Annie, in the 1920s. It is nicely designed and well made Arts & Crafts style bookcase, and to this day it is the only thing that Tom owns that once belonged to his father. In designing the Windward Bookcase Tom made a number of changes, including removable shelves, but that's where it began, from an approximately 1922 bookcase that was designed and built by Joseph Moser. It also influenced the entire Windward Collection, included the patented Windward Chair and Sofas.

Thos. Moser Pasadena Side Chair in Walnut
The Pasadena Dining Chair was named "Best of Year" in 2008 for Product Design/Residential Dining Chair by Interior Design magazine.... A modern, geometric hourglass defines the telltale shape of the Pasadena Dining Chair, continuing the action set in motion by the Dining Table. Only one flat plane exists on each chair, where the back and the seat joint are reinforced. Otherwise, they seem more carved than assembled. Their shapely legs are faceted and splayed to provide stability without bulk. The seats are wide and as comfortable as any solid wood dining chair could be without upholstery. The slender back of the Side Chair scrolls up from this strong foundation, using the least amount of material needed to comfortably support the sitter. The Arm Chair has a central back splat to support its broader profile, and the Side Chair is available with or without a similar back. As a whole, the Pasadena Dining Chairs enhance the space they inhabit, without overpowering it. STOCK IMAGES SHOWN IN CHERRY WOOD

Thos. Moser Coal Shovel Stool 25"
The inspiration behind the Coal Shovel Stool comes from a faraway and unlikely source. Remote and untainted, New Zealand's seemingly supernatural geography and stark simplicity inspired the clean lines, quiet elegance and confident presentation of this piece. Through the filter of one of New Zealand's own craftsman, in friendship with another at Thos. Moser, the design of the Coal Shovel stool highlights the inherent beauty of the cherry grain while at the same time, strengthens its unrelenting standard of utility. About Stool Heights We offer three standard stool seat heights: 25" stools for standard 36" high counters; 27" stools for taller counters; and 31" stools for a 42" bar height.

Originally designed and crafted by Thomas Moser himself over 30 years ago, our High Stool was intended as a hard working piece. True to the creative spirit of Moser, however, the enduring value of our High Stool lies in its ability to humbly serve both the artist at the easel and the craftsman at the bench. Both in inspiration, both in grace. Made from American cherry on four tapered ash legs, the seat itself is reminiscent of that of a tractor or a saddle, offering the same historic simplicity and remarkable comfort. In wood and in artisanship, our High Stool is as sculpted on the bottom as it is on top, making it singularly pleasing and inviting to its use.

    Thos. Moser Meridian Dining Chair
David Moser's acute sense for aesthetic details are found in the fine radius of the dining chair's underside, the inverse matched radius at the top of the leg, and the optical correction effect at the termination of the chair's crest. The independent yet strong single back slat is a first for David and accentuates the sleek lines. Another first is the use of ash as the primary wood. While also offered in cherry, the clean, crisp aesthetic of ash creates an uplifting lightness that matches perfectly with this contemporary design and allows the grain and texture of the wood to come to the fore. The finish on Meridian in ash is a clear lacquer finish with a UV inhibitor to protect and seal the ash and minimize the impact of light and air on the color of the wood over time. This will be the first time we have used this exact finish, but we expect it will be a durable finish and easy to live with. The finish on Meridan in cherry is our standard oil and wax. Like all our furniture, Meridian is guaranteed for the life of the original owner, and there is much more finish info available in our maintenance and care guide which can be downloaded by clicking here.

  • Thos. Moser Cumberland Dining Chair, walnut (shown)

Thos. Moser Cumberland Dining Chair, walnut (shown)
This latest addition to the Moser portfolio embodies our enduring commitment to simplicity. Though inspired by Danish Modern forms, the Cumberland Dining Chair has its own perspective and is a uniquely artistic interpretation of its historical antecedents. Check out the Cumberland Lookbook... Perhaps not apparent at first glance are the nuanced relationships of the parts that inform the overall proportion of this chair. Typical of Moser furniture, we've tried to simplify each piece, stripping it to its required elements alone. The opportunity for elevating the modest furniture forms comes through the attention to the relationship of one of these spared parts to another. The rails that span the legs and support the saddled solid wood seat employ an innovative double-housed mortise and tenon joint - allowing us to achieve the desired simplicity without compromising strength. Atop the turned tapered legs sits the continuous arm and crest rail. This element is the sum of three pieces, a single solid wood steam bending at the back, joined with the collections hallmark visible finger joint to the arms. Due to the well-considered geometry of the seat and the relationship to the continuous arm + crest rail, the saddled solid wood seat provides comfort without relying on the use of an upholstered foam seat. We've enabled ourselves to decrease the thickness of the seat which creates a visual lightness which furthers the simplicity that is characteristic of this collection. Like any Moser furniture, this piece is guaranteed for life. We are confident that our innovative joinery has only raised the bar for Moser quality.
  • Thos. Moser Continuous Arm Chair
    thosmoser.com
    Thos. Moser Continuous Arm Chair
Our signature piece, the Continuous Arm Chair, remains a unique, trademarked Moser design. To form the arms eleven knife-cut slices of the same board just one-tenth of an inch thick, called flitch, are laminated together. Then each continuous arm is painstakingly rasped, filed and sanded to a perfect smoothness. Learn more about this iconic design below... The Origin The continuous arm chair is a Windsor chair, a design that originated in England in the 1700s for use as garden furniture. Some people think the name Windsor came from the castle of the same name. One thing for certain, the original Windsor chairs were large, heavy (thus, hard to move around) but offered a good deal of comfort, which is the chief reason the style endured. In about 1750, Rhode Island cabinetmakers came up with the idea of making the arm and the back of the chair from a single piece of hickory or ash, two types of wood that lend themselves to being steam bent and curved. While undoubtedly beautiful and comfortable, the Continuous Arm Chair took tremendous skill and patience to make, because of the need to form a compound curve with right angle bends. In the early 1970s, Tom Moser set out to create a new generation of Continuous Arm Chair. It took him many years to perfect the design. He made the first prototypes for the back of the chair out of copper plumbing pipes, because they were easily bent and held their shape. Once he got the form just right, he created a wooden prototype and began experimenting with lamination and bending techniques. As Tom recalls, "Originally I used wedges, then I used a cams and straps to create the right pressure to form the bend. It still wasn't right, so I employed a stainless steel strap with a couple of arms that came off a logging truck and some ratchets. Finally, I graduated to using air pressure. The whole process took years, a little piece at a time." By the late 1970s, the Thos. Moser Continuous Arm Chair was ready to make its debut. Judging from the reception the chair received from our customers, it was well worth the effort. How it's Made The continuous arm in our signature chair is created using flitch-cut cherry. The process involves quartering and steaming sections of logs, then slicing them into tenth-inch thick strips. Because the strips are cut with a knife, not a saw, no saw dust is created and the strength of the board is preserved. Hence, when you glue the pieces back together, they are just as they grew in the tree. The beauty is that while it retains the appearance of a solid wood, the continuous arm is actually comprised of eleven different layers. It takes a tremendous amount of hand work to shape each continuous arm, because it's shape is oval in at the top, becomes round, then U-shaped with a flat surface where it meets the arms. Each arm is trimmed, then filed by hand using a course file called a horse rasp, then a finer rasp, and finished with a hand sander. Even the holes are drilled by eye. The Continuous Arm Chair also includes other refinements, such as a highlight (raised section) that runs around the back of the chair, where the spindles join the seat. The spindles extend all the way through the seat and are wedged top and bottom, making them not only aesthetically pleasing, but easily repaired, should the need ever arise. The spindles are so finely tuned, you can pluck them the way you would with a string on a harp and they should resonate at the same frequency. One more well considered detail of the Continuous Arm Chair are its legs. Most Windsor chairs have stretchers that connect the legs to one another. Often times, the stretchers get creaky and tend to loosen. In addition, they are dust collectors and prevent the sitter you from crossing their legs underneath. So, Tom Moser replaced the stretchers with a curved brace called a ship's knee. Supportive and strong, the ship's knee is created from 1/32" laminated ash that is bent to shape, then set into a slot that is cut and shaped into the leg, so it is flush to the surface. Over 30 years since we first introduced the Continuo

Perhaps the most bold example of the finger joint in the Cumberland Collection, the table's skirts come together at the corners with this visible traditional joint. The end grain creates a contrast in tones visible from alternating sides. The skirt's corner joint is then shaped to sympathetically accept the top of the turned tapered leg, with the width of the fingers aligning with the diameter of the top of the leg. A healthy chamfer is introduced at the top of the leg to allow the joint some breathing room and draw its due visual attention. The table is designed to comfortably accommodate six (6) guests, three (3) on each side. This spacing is based on a standard place setting and is applicable when pairing with Cumberland Dining Chairs.

Thos. Moser Harpswell Stool 25-inch seat
To create the back crest of the Harpswell Stool, we begin with a three-inch-block of cherry, called a twelve-quarter by the lumber mills. As we carve into the block, swirling grain patterns emerge. Each crest is an individual canvas - no two are alike. When the seats are lined up together the effect is stunning. We've added our skill as joiners of wood, but nature has held the paintbrush. About Stool Heights We offer three standard stool seat heights: 25" stools for standard 36" high counters; 27" stools for taller counters; and 31" stools for a 42" bar height.

An elegant and lasting solution for the shared spaces of personal offices, Windward Bookcases can be stacked, set side-by-side or separated to flank a doorway. Each 36-inch high section has two adjustable shelves.

  • Thos. Moser Hawthorne Arm Chair
    thosmoser.com
    Thos. Moser Hawthorne Arm Chair
The Hawthorne Chair is a wooden-seat chair that incorporates the best of the Windsor form and box-frame architecture. There are no side rails as with a box-frame chair. The back legs are square and run all the way from the floor to the top crest. The front legs are also square as in a box-frame chair, but terminate in the seat with a tenon, in true Windsor fashion. The top crest is unique in our experience. Square spindles are connected using individual blocks of cherry along the top, rather than a single piece of wood. This is done in such a way that obviates the need for a solid top rail. Patterned like the teeth of a comb, the fan of the spindles lends the sitter truly comfortable and hardy support, be it for a long dinner conversation or a day at the desk. Twelve solid cherry spindles cut from one board are molded to form a splayed back terminating in a unique upper crest, allowing the natural contrasting hues of the wood to show through, much like piano keys. The wide seat is carved to cradle the sitter and is attached to the tapered front legs using curved braces we call "knees." Unique half-lap joints attach the back spindles to the seat and provide both visual interest and enduring strength. The Arm Chair has hand-polished cherry arms and struts that curve in to provide arm support.

It is the product of the first Emerging Designer Program by Thos. Moser, in collaboration with Dwell magazine and City Modern New York , and was recognized as a 2014 Best of Year Honoree by Interior Design magazine. >> CLICK HERE to read about the Fahmida Chair on the Architectural Digest blog > GearPatrol.com has named the Fahmida Chair as one of the "Greatest 100 Products On Earth" in the 2014 GP100 << Fahmida Lam, a residential furniture and accessories designer from Brooklyn who graduated from Pratt Institute, was selected to take part in a week-long experiential apprenticeship with Thos. Moser Director of Design, Adam Rogers. The result was the prototype for chair you see here, which we have named Fahmida in reference to the designer and was launched to the public at Dwell on Design 2014. The design of the Fahmida Chair is influenced by the Mid-Century Modern style, specifically, Danish Modern. Although admittedly inspired by the furniture born of the style, this piece - like any Thos. Moser piece or collection - has its own perspective and is a unique interpretation of its historical antecedents, through the lens of designer Fahmida Lam. Leveraging the strength and beauty of hand-finished American hardwoods such as cherry and walnut, the chair cuts a fresh, airy profile that naturally complements any thoughtful and clean aesthetic. Just as the Shaker style served as an appropriate creative spark in classic Thos. Moser pieces, the Danish Modern aesthetic acts here as a vehicle, identified and chosen because of its compatible philosophies, such as; a foremost dedication to quality, a dedication to functionally driven objects, formal simplicity, the characteristic elimination of ornament, use and celebration of traditional materials, and an emphasis on craftsmanship. These characteristics are not only compatible, but exemplary of what the Thos. Moser brand has come to stand for, and this piece is yet another iteration of Thos. Moser quality. "When we introduced the emerging designers program, my goal was to heighten respect for the craft of wood furniture; how it necessarily requires an understanding of and respect for the natural material, while allowing the craft itself to serve as a counterpart in the design process" - Adam Rogers , Thos. Moser director of design ABOUT THE DESIGNER In 2013, Pratt graduate and Brooklyn native, Fahmida Lam was invited to Thos. Moser to design and build a chair. Fahmida, an emerging residential furniture and accessories designer whose portfolio also includes lighting, home accessories and soft goods, worked closely with Adam Rogers, Director of Design and Product Development, and master craftsman Warren Shaw, to leverage the techniques, material and joinery of Moser to guide and express her design. The collaboration resulted in the decision to launch and include the Fahmida Chair in our product offerings for summer 2014.

    Thos. Moser Pasadena Arm Chair

    Thos. Moser Pasadena Rocker, cherry
Approaching design with a sculptor's eye, David Moser's passion is stirred by contemporary sources of objective beauty. Such was the case with the Pasadena Rocker, the progeny of a long line of high craft design-builders such as Sam Maloof, Art Carpenter, Wharton Esherick and New Zealand furniture designer David Haig. The Pasadena Rocker was awarded Interior Design magazine's BEST OF YEAR award in the residential seating category.. When David Moser began exploring the nuances of his own rocker form, he was particularly moved by Haig's design accomplishment, exemplifying sublime form and sheer simplicity. And so in consummate Moser fashion we again challenged ourselves to coax movement and fluidity from solid wood. David's intent was to build a quintessentially functional Moser piece in the "studio" genre; rollover edges and flowing joints. The result is a stand-alone sculptural piece, satisfying the visual senses while offering comfort and long service. Available in cherry or walnut.

Thos. Moser Cumberland Dining Table, walnut (shown)
The Cumberland Dining Table has been named "Best of Year" for 2014 by Interior Design magazine.. This latest addition to the Moser portfolio embodies our enduring commitment to simplicity. Though inspired by Danish Modern forms, the Cumberland Dining Table has its own perspective and is a uniquely artistic interpretation of its historical antecedents. Check out the Cumberland Lookbook...

The middle drawer is actually a keyboard tray with a flip-down front, while two side drawers provide storage. Sale price will be shown in shopping cart after entering promotional code APR15 before final checkout. Sale ends April 30, 2015. Designed in collaboration between Tom and David Moser and introduced in 2000, our Chaise takes its inspiration from contemporary furniture designs created by European architects in the 1920's and 1930's. Taking our cue from the likes of Finnish architect Alvar Aalto and Swiss-born architect and designer Le Corbusier, we've replaced tubular steel with the warmth of natural cherry and precision crafted mortise-and-tenon joinery. The sinuous cherry frame supports a webbed back, upholstered in full-grain leather. A removable headrest provides additional comfort, if desired. The two-position Chaise reclines fully without any handles or gadgets. Simply lean back and let gravity do the rest. The secret is in the geometry of the pivot, called a fulcrum, which is engineered to transfer an adult's center of gravity from slightly upright to supine in one fluid motion. Tom Moser's inspiration for this movement? The simplicity of a contemporary Italian-made aluminum lawn chair he sat in one afternoon in a friend's backyard. After many days of trial and error, he and David were finally able to make it work in wood.

Thos. Moser Vita Chair, Walnut w/ Black Leather
The Vita Chair and Ottoman represent the evolution of our design ethos, merging the sentiments of modernism with the substance, grace, and tradition of solid cherry and leather. The Vita Collection pays tribute to master architect Mies van der Rohe, originator of the term "less is more", by harnessing the natural strength of wood to achieve suspension and cantilever with minimal form. The curved back and tufted cushions echo a familiar silhouette, while the architecture of the base and the materials are something else entirely. A solid, matched-grain cherry back and seat are joined in an ergonomically curved frame.
