Knoll International Knoll - Saarinen Tulip Chair
Eero Saarinen designed the first version of the Tulip Chair in 1953 and created therewith the base of a revolutionary design classic among seating furniture – there has never been a chair before that connected foot and seat to one closed form. In cooperation with the manufacturer Knoll, the Tulip Chair has been further developed. 1956 the chair finally came to the market with its characteristic shape that it still wears. The purist designed Tulip Chair reminds us of a tulip as its name says, combined with classic Scandinavian design. The background of the design of the Tulip Chair is described by Eero Saarinen: "I wanted to order the confusing feet mixture. I wanted to make a unity out of a chair again.” This made the four-feet chair as one knows it, a one-feet chair. The seat of the Tulip Chair is made out of plastic and reinforced with fiberglass. It sits on a trumpet-shaped base which is made out of weightless metal and has a Rilsan-surface coating. Moreover the chair is available in different editions: initially there is the choice between a chair with armrests and one without them. The Tulip Chair can be ordered in a swivel version or standing, furthermore one can choose an upholstered seat or a separate cushion for it. The coatings are available with numerous different fabrics and colours. Also the chair itself is produced in black and white. Of course we would be glad to suggest you about colours, forms and tissues for your individual Tulip Chair! More details: Characteristics: The Tulip Seating furniture collection by Saarinen includes an armrest chair, a chair without armrests, with swivel base or fixed foot and a stool. The chairs are available whether with an upholstered cushion or wholly upholstered seats with seat cushion. The swivel chair with upholstered seating cushion fulfills the collection. The KnollStudio logo and the signature from Eero Saarinen are printed on the lower part of the foot. Construction: Pillar foot out of cast aluminium with Rilsan coating on all black and white models. The platin coloured pillar feet have a polyurethane coating with transparent finish. The bowl is made out of fiberglass reinforced plastic. Surface: Bowl and frame are black, white or platinum coloured. Wholly upholstered seats with seat cushion with different fabrics available. For chairs with seating cushions there are many different fabrics and Spinneybeck leathers available to be chosen. Awards: Award of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1969 / Federal Republic Prize for product design / "Gute Form”, Germany, 1969 / Award for design career of Design Centers Stuttgart, Germany, 1962.

Already admired by teachers, students and visitors of the Dessau Bauhaus, where it stood in a few houses of the "master town”. And already in 1926, the production beginning year, it was honored as "masterpiece” in the exposition of the Dresden arts hall. The first steel rod lounger B 3 from Marcel Breuer – later known as "Club Lounger” or "Wassily” – soon reached publicity and was part of the interests to the Bauhaus. Finally it should cause a worldwide boom for steel rod furniture that stood for avant-gardism and the break of industrial aesthetics into privacy. With the also new black-silver contrasts which also remind of valuable jewelry and modern machines, he created "magic of precision”, as a French critic wrote. Breuer saw "apparatus of today’s life” in his furniture. They should be weightless, open, affordable, demountable and hygienic. B 3, which has also been available as folding furniture and which has been built by Breuer in his leisure time together with a locksmith, fulfilled these criteria. Therewith he connected to designs of Gerrit Rietveld among others. Breuer didn’t create an everyday object with the Wassily Chair as he desired, but a new furniture type and an "abstract-real-sculpture” (Siegfried Geidion), in whose open geometry the minimalism of new form-finders is displayed. It became a real design icon, a central symbol of modern times and not for nothing the first furniture piece that became a classic in the 60es. By the way: numerous myths are told around the name giving of the Wassily chair. Some say that it got its name because Wassily Kandinsky was the roommate of Marcel Breuer in the Bauhaus. Others say it only has the name because the chair was a design for Wassily Kandisky’s apartment at the Bauhaus in Dessau. More details: Characteristics: A classic KnollStudio Design; produced after the original design of Breuer. The KnollStudio logo and the signature of Marcel Breuer are imprinted in the lower frame of the chair. Construction: Seamless formed round tube steel, high gloss chromed. Surface: The upholstery in Cowhide leather is available in black, light brown and natural white. The upholstery in Spinneybeck Belting leather is available in a wide colours selection. Awards: The Museum of Modern Art Award, 1968 / Recognition as "Work of Art" Germany, 1982.

  • Knoll International Knoll - Florence Sofa

Knoll International Knoll - Florence Sofa
As manager of the „Knoll Planning Unit", Florence Knoll steadily thought about the connections between all furniture pieces when she designed something. It was important to her that furniture was suitable for all kinds of rooms. The geometric forms of the Florence Sofa have their origin in architecture. Florence Knoll would never compromise, which is why she often designed new products when there wasn’t any suitable piece for her room planning. And since she never contemplated herself as a furniture designer, Knoll’s aim for harmony and consistence in design led to many products considered iconic pieces of the manufacturer; simple and unpretentious as the Knoll Florence Sofa. When skycrappers grew in America, Florence Knoll believed she had to adapt her furniture to that new architecture, adapting therewith interior decorations to it as well. She created geometric, clear furniture pieces as the Florence Sofa, which was clearly influenced by her mentor Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, by means of reducing architecture scales and making them more "human” with colours and textures. There is a comfortable springing inside of the sofa, which avoids the body from subsiding: Armrests, seat and backrests of the Florence Sofa are filled with foam in different densities.

Knoll International Knoll - Wassily Canvas
Already admired by teachers, students and visitors of the Dessau Bauhaus, where it stood in a few houses of the "master town”. And already in 1926, the first production year, it was honored as "masterpiece” in the exposition of the Dresden arts hall. The first steel tube lounger B 3 from Marcel Breuer – later known as "Club Lounger” or "Wassily” – soon reached recognition and was part of the interests to the Bauhaus. Finally it should cause a worldwide boom for steel tube furniture that stood for avant-gardism and the break of industrial aesthetics into privacy. With the also new black-silver contrasts which also remind of valuable jewelry and modern machines, he created the "magic of precision”, as a French critic wrote. It became a real design icon, a central symbol of modern times and not for nothing, it is the first furniture piece that became a classic in the 60es. By the way: numerous myths are told around the name of the Wassily chair. Some say that it got its name because Wassily Kandinsky was the roommate of Marcel Breuer in the Bauhaus. Others say it only has the name because the chair was a design for Wassily Kandisky’s apartment at the Bauhaus in Dessau. According to the Bauhaus philosophy, the Knoll Wassily Canvas has a special original, pure charm. As canvas edition, the armchair is coated with a robust linen with pure appeal.

Marcel Breuer was an apprentice at the Bauhaus when he conceived the world's first tubular steel chair. Inspired by the frame of a bicycle, a product he greatly admired for its functional design, Breuer saw tubular steel as a way of building a more transparent chair. The composition of leather strips suspended on steel tubes was the first chair of its kind. Breuer later named the chair after Wassily Kandinsky, the first person to whom he showed the chair. The wire frame furniture pieces by Warren Planter are clearly for design enthusiasts already since the middle of the 1960es. Knoll brings the long unproduced Easy Chair by the American designer back. The Easy Chair and the Ottoman have initially been presented in 1966. The still modern design proves that good design doesn’t age – since the Planter collection today still has a remarkable number of lovers and fans. The production out of steel wire was extremely complicated and newish then, which wasn’t an irrelevant reason for the fame of the original "Planter Collection”: The base construction out of bent wire acts weightless and contrasts the round, comfortable forms of the seat. The Easy Chair by Knoll is the embodiment of a comfortable chair: The seat has an anatomic shape and it is softly foamed. Thanks to the big shape, one will find a comfortable place in the most different positions. The Easy Chair is wonderfully completed by the Ottoman by Warren Planter. We also offer the Knoll Easy Chair with other coatings and in the most different colour combinations. More details: Characteristics: The Easy Chair by Warren Planter is available with the most different coatings and colour combinations. Construction: Frame out of steel wire, nickel plated and coated with clear lacquer. Seat out of foam fiberglass. Cushion with latex core and Velcro closure, to fix at the Easy Chair.

Saarinen Tulip Dining Table By Knoll
Eero Saarinen did not, in fact, invent the pedestal table, but we might be forgiven for thinking he did. The Saarinen Tulip Dining Table was a revolutionary design, in part, because it stood in such stark contrast to the standard pedestal table designed before Saarinen's Tulip collection for Knoll entered the design scene in 1957. "The underside of typical chairs and tables makes a confusing, unrestful world. I wanted to clear up the slum of legs,” he told Time magazine in 1956. And so he did, with a base said to be inspired by "a drop of high viscosity liquid." Intrigued by the possibilities in emerging technologies like molded plywood and fiberglass, Saarinen, a Finn, was also predisposed to the Nordic design sensibilities of simplicity and rationality. Half a century later, it's that clarity of vision that elevates Saarinen's Tulip Dining Table from merely beautiful to full-fledged classic. Construction and Details Tabletop features beveled edge. Top attaches to base with threaded rod. Tabletops available in a wide range of laminates, woods, marbles and granites. Base is heavy molded cast aluminum available with white, black or platinum paint. GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certified. The wire frame furniture pieces by Warren Planter are clearly for design enthusiasts already since the middle of the 1960es. The Ottoman is the suitable fulfil for the Easy Chair out of the Planter collection by Knoll. The Easy Chair and the Ottoman have initially been presented in 1966. The still modern design proves that good design doesn’t age – since the Planter collection today still has a remarkable number of lovers and fans. The production out of steel wire was extremely complicated and newish then, which wasn’t an irrelevant reason for the fame of the original "Planter Collection”. The base construction out of bent wire acts weightless and contrasts the round, comfortable forms of the seat. Thereby it is up to you whether using the Ottoman as stool or as footrest. Thanks to the big shape, the Ottoman by Warren Planter is an extremely comfortable piece of furniture. The Ottoman is wonderfully emphasized together with the Easy Chair by Knoll and it therewith offers the highest sitting and lying comfort. We also offer the Knoll Ottoman with other coatings and in the most different colour combinations. More details: Characteristics: The Ottoman by Warren Planter is available with the most different coatings and colour combinations. Eero Saarinen designed the first version of the Tulip Chair in 1953 and with it, he created the base of a revolutionary design classic among all the chairs – there has never been a chair that connected its base and seat in one closed form before. The Tulip Chair was further developed in cooperation with Knoll. Finally, the chair went to the market in its characteristic design known until today, in 1956. The purist designed Tulip Chair reminds us of a tulip, as its name reveals, and it combines modernity with classic Scandinavian design. The background of the design of the Tulip Chair is described by Eero Saarinen as follows: "I wanted to stop the confusing mixture of chair-feet. I wanted to make a unity again out of an armchair.” This is how the four-feet chair as we know it, became a one-foot model. The seat of the Tulip Chair consists of synthetics, fiberglass reinforced. It sits on a trumpet-shaped base which was cast out of light metal and has a rilsan-surface coating. Moreover the chair is available in different editions: initially there is the selection between an armchair and a design without armrests. The Tulip Chair can be delivered in a rotating or rigid edition, moreover the seat is available upholstered or alone and with a separate cushion. The coatings are available in numerous different fabrics and colours. Also the chair itself can be produced in black and white. Of course we will gladly advise you when it comes to choose the right colour, fabric and shape of your individual Tulip Chair! More details:. Characteristics: The Tulip chairs collection by Saarinen includes an armchair, a chair without armrests, with rotating base or a rigid one and a stool. The chairs are available with a cushion or fully upholstered. The swivel chair with upholstered seat fulfils the collection. The KnollStudio logo and the signature by Eero Saarinen are on the lower part of the base. Construction: Pillar foot out of aluminium casting with rilsan-coating on all black and white models. The platinum bases have a polyurethane coating with transparent finish. The seat consists of bent, fiberglass reinforced synthetics. Surfaces: Seat and frame black, white or platinum. The fully upholstered seats are available with cushions in different fabrics. Many different fabrics and spinney beck-leathers are available for chairs with cushions. Awards: Award of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1969 / Federal prize for product design/„Gute Form", Germany, 1969 / Award for design career by the Design Centre Stuttgart, Germany, 1962.

Knoll International Knoll - Laccio 2 Coffee Table
The design of the Laccio coffee table has already been coined by Marcel Breuer in 1925. The table with the characteristic U-shape frame is also known as Bauhaus table and presents a modern and simultaneously timeless design. Initially the Laccio couch table was used as stool, until it finally found utility as a table. The table frame consists of steel tube – a material with which Breuer experimented for years before he used it for the Laccio couch table among others. The designer Breuer has been fascinated about forming never ending shapes out of steel rod and then designed a series of different steel tube furniture pieces. Breuer wanted to create "apartments of today’s life” with his designs and especially focused on making his products demountable and hygienic. The Laccio coffee table fulfils these demands and is moreover a high quality design classic since many years. The table board of the Laccio coffee table is made out of plastic laminate and available in white, red or black. The round-tube-steel made frame is shaped seamless and high glossy chromed. The rectangular Laccio model is moreover combinable with a smaller, square edition of the Laccio coffee table. More details: Characteristics: As Bauhaus trainee, Marcel Breuer designed the low table as companion of the Wassily Chair in 1925, the first steel-tube-design based on steel-tube-frames of bicycles. Construction: Tabletop out of plastic laminate in black, white or red, seamless formed round –steel-tube, high gloss chromed. Surface: Frame with polished chrome-plating.

The seating furniture that has been designed in the end of the 20es by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for the German pavilion of the world exposition in Barcelona, counts to the absolute classic today, deservedly. On one hand because the ensemble of the clear pavilion made the cold lifestyle famous later – becoming the "International Style”. On the other hand, because there are historic references. That is how Greek folding chairs (scissor- or driving-chairs as throne for gods and monarchs) served as inspiration. More or less this is a new-time throne (without folding function). In reality, the furniture pieces for the Barcelona pavilion fulfilled highly representative purposes in their initial context: They should serve as royal chairs during the opening ceremony of the world exposition in Barcelona. This conception stands in contrast to the social, even socialistic aims, which was kept by many protagonists of the "New Constructing” at that time. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe used band steel and leather upholstery on the world exposition in celebrity white. The chair Barcelona was a luxury furniture and moreover hardly suitable for the series. The frame had to be welded sophistically by hand, which meant that the chair could be firstly produced in a changed version from 1948 on. However, it is a really innovative design which enlarged the repertoire of modern times. More details: Characteristics: A signed KnollStudio-Furniture, which is manufactured with Mies van der Rohe initial specifications. In 1953 the designer offered exclusive market and production rights to Knoll. Also a children’s edition of the Barcelona Stool is available. Awards: Award of the Museum of Modern Art, 1977.
