  • Sigvard Bernadotte Pitcher 1010

    Sigvard Bernadotte Pitcher 1010
The spare, geometrical silver design of Pitcher 1010 reflects the functionalistic idiom of Bernadotte’s style. He replaced Georg Jensen’s typical hammered finish with a clean and smooth surface. Despite his devotion to functionalism, his designs also embody a sort of personal sensitivity that gives them appealing warmth. Pitcher 1010 is also called the ice-water jug due to the functional sieve that works as a strainer hindering ice cubes or lemon pieces from slipping out. The content in the pitcher stays ice cold all day. Pitcher 1010 with it’s timeless design and ebony handle is one of Bernadotte's own personal favourites. The Pitcher became a design icon in 1980 when Sarah Booth Conroy wrote - ‘The Sterling Silver ice-water jug, designed by Bernadotte in 1952, is fit not only for a king but a god’ - in the Washington Post. Design year: 1952. Materials: Sterling silver, ebony. Measurements: H: 17.2 cm / 6.77 inches L: 9.4 cm /3.7 inches W: 10.4 cm / 4 inches.
  • Georg Jensen GRAPE pitcher 407A
    georgjensen.com
    Georg Jensen GRAPE pitcher 407A
As most of Georg Jensen’s designs Pitcher 407A is in the Art Nouveau style with the characteristic ornamental curved lines, organic structures, decorative ornaments of flora and fauna, and the use of honest and skilfully crafted materials. The Grape Motif was first introduced in 1918 on the Grape Bowls. This Pitcher was designed just after the end of World War 1 (1914-1918 ) - a very rich period where unprecedented abundance of money circulated, trade flourished everywhere and the Silversmithy had a record turnover. During these years Georg Jensen created some hollowware pieces more richly decorated than normally seen from his side. These pieces have a touch of it – it is more distinct in the almost baroque Candelabra No. 383. However, very characteristic of Georg Jensen, he does show restraint in the use of decoration. The exquisite ornamentation is limited to the base leaving the rest of the item only decorated on the surface with hammer marks. The chaser has many hours of work on the base of the pitcher. When the chaser gets the base it is totally smooth so the first step is to draw the pattern to be chased with a pencil. This is necessary to ensure that the convex shaped squares have the exact same size and that the delicate pattern underneath the grapes is laid out correctly. Then the patient work with the hammer and the punches starts. The Pitcher 407A has an ebony handle carved with its own design and it is fitted especially for each individual pitcher. At the bottom of the base of the Pitcher you will find a rod – a strong ring of silver which has been soldered on to make the edge of the base strong and less vulnerable to dents. Design year: 1925. Materials: Sterling silver, ebony. Measurements: H: 23 cm / 9.05 inches.

  • Henning Koppel Pitcher 974B
    georgjensen.com
    Henning Koppel Pitcher 974B
Henning Koppel’s Pitcher 974B is a unique item decorated with a flat silver thread. The silver thread which 'extends' the 'neck' is inspired by the african tradition of giving a girl a new ring to put around her neck each year. To make Pitcher 974B the silversmith cuts out two identical flat pieces of silver which are then shaped i.e. raised by the same technique as the covered dish 1026. When the silversmith has gone through the long process of raising the silver, heating it often to ensure that it stays soft and flexible he continues to work on the surface with many different hammers to make it smooth. When the two halves have their final shape they are given a final press in a form to ensure a perfect fit. The edges of the two halves are grinded and carefully prepared for a perfect fit and they are then carefully soldered together. One of the challenges with Pitcher 974B is that the soldering seams must be invisible – and watertight of course! The bottom is the last part to be soldered on. Design year: 1946. Materials: Sterling silver. Measurements: H: 24.2 cm / 9.52 inches Ø: 16 cm / 6.29 inches.

Georg Jensen BLOSSOM vegetable dish 2A
As most of Georg Jensen’s designs this serving piece is in the Art Nouveau style with the characteristic ornamental curved lines, organic structures, decorative ornaments of flora and fauna, and the use of honest and skilfully crafted materials. As typical for Georg Jensen’s pieces the decoration is concentrated on the top of the lid and to the handles. Serving dish 2A is decorated with the Magnolia bud so very characteristic for Georg Jensen. The Magnolia has been in production from the beginning and its popularity is still growing. The flower bud was inspired by Japanese art, which uses the magnolia bud as a symbol of the month of May. The Magnolia – like the bunch of grapes - has become a symbol of the beautifully exuberant design of the founder of the company. The metal spinner starts out by raising the bowl and the lid of the serving dish from flat sheets of silver. When the centre of the lid has been raised, the chaser makes the motive underneath the floral decoration with his/her fine hammer and punches and then applies the hammer marks. The silversmith makes the hammer marks on the dish while the chaser hammers the lid. To ensure that the overall impression is the same the two craftsmen co-ordinate that their hammer marks are applied with the same strength and in the same pattern so that the look is soft and harmonious. The silversmith will build up the floral decoration on top of the lid piece by piece: Each lid is fitted especially for each dish. When the hammer marks are applied the silver will stretch slightly and therefore each dish will vary. It may be just 1 mm or less but it is enough for the lid not to fit perfectly unless it is fitted especially for the dish. The handles on Dish 2A also have the Magnolia blossom decoration in between the bowl and the strong solid rim of silver. The handle alone consists of 21 pieces. Design year: 1905. Materials: Sterling silver. Measurements: H: 11.9 cm / 4.68 inches Ø: 24.1 cm / 9.48 inches.

  • Georg Jensen BLOSSOM tray 2E

    Georg Jensen BLOSSOM tray 2E
This oval Blossom tray with handles is a typical Georg Jensen Art Nouveau design from 1905. The Blossom design and details on the tray demonstrates Georg Jensen’s inspiration by nature. His fascination for the reflection of Scandinavian moonlight is the inspiration for the hammered surface. The flower bud was inspired by Japanese art, which uses the magnolia bud as a symbol of the month of May. Not all silversmiths have the ability or the patience to become a tray maker! Trays are the most difficult and time consuming type of hollowware to make – it takes a lot more than 4 years of apprenticeship to learn how to make trays and you do not learn it by reading a book but by practice, practice and more practice. Silver in itself is a very soft material so if you cut out a sheet of silver, put some handles on and then place a jug of water on the tray, the tray will simply give way/collapse – it does not have the strength to hold practically anything. To give it that strength the silversmith must hammer on the silver in a certain way over and over again. The goal is to obtain the right span and the right hardness and part of the long process is to hammer lightly in the curvature with 5-6 different hammers. Design year: 1905. Materials: Sterling silver. Measurements: L: 47 cm / 18.5 inches W: 33 cm / 13 inches.

    Harald Nielsen PYRAMID creamer 600A
Creamer 600A is part of the pyramid coffee and tea set. The elements are based on geometric shapes: The ball, the triangle, the circle and straight lines. The lines are slightly curved, the profiles are accentuated, and the leaf underneath the jug’s handle accentuates the sweep of its arch. The Pyramid design belongs to the Art Déco style, which was an international style of design and architecture. The form language of Art Déco favoured the basic structures of geometry like the cube, the triangle and the circle. The inspiration came from various free art movements like Dada’s machine aesthetic, Cubism’s geometrical approach and Surrealism’s interest in the subconscious. The spectacular discovery of the virtually intact tomb of King Tutankhamen in Egypt also influenced the Art Déco style with motifs from the Egyptian furniture and pyramids. The shape of this service is a challenge to the silversmith. Silver is a very lively material when it is heated and especially when the top of the pot is soldered on it is vital that the top part is kept at an even temperature all the time. Otherwise, the silver will bend out of shape. Design year: 1930. Materials: Sterling silver. Measurements: H: 5.2 cm / 2.04 inches Ø: 10 cm / 3.93 inches.

    Sigvard Bernadotte Pitcher 856A
Pitcher 856A is sometimes called ‘the melon pitcher’ because of its shape and similarity to the fruit. Although it was initially designed as part of a set together with Bowl 856 A+B for serving strawberries, the bowl displaying the strawberries beautifully and the pitcher being a perfect size for the cream. The smooth top part of the pitcher is made out of a separate flat piece of silver which has been cut, bent and shaped to fit perfectly with the body before being soldered together. The handle is hollow and has been raised from another flat piece of silver. The handle has a line running down the middle which must be absolutely centred and straight – this can be a very time consuming adjustment for the silversmith. If it is not absolutely straight it will be disclosed immediately due to the lines on the body of the pitcher. The chaser accentuates these very straight and fine lines with his/her hammer and punches moving them in a steady and even movement over the silver. Design year: 1938. Materials: Sterling silver. Measurements: H: 15 cm / 5.90 inches Ø: 11 cm / 4.33 inches.

This shallow platter by Nicola Tassie is part of "Material Status," a collection of ceramics composing of faceted jugs, bowls and cylinder pitchers, made especially for The Future Perfect. Tough but tactile, this group of ceramics avoids simplicity through a richness rooted in the quality of the clay used in its construction. Gravel and grog are mixed into the clays to disturb their normally pristine state. Some of the black clay is flecked with porcelain grog to resemble a starry cosmos or an archeological relic. The smooth grey vessels compliment and complete the group. Limoges Porcelain with added course grog, raw on the outside, with a transparent glaze on the inside. The exteriors are unglazed, sanded down to a softer finish.
