    An enclosed structure over the Rio di Palazzo in Venice, the Bridge of Sighs originally served as a walkway between the interrogation rooms in Doge's Palace to the New Prison. Lord Byron named the bridge in the 19th century, implying that the picturesque view from its barred windows might be the convict's last – hence a lyrical sigh. The Ponte dei Sospiri (Bridge of Sighs) was designed by Antonio Contino and built of white limestone in 1600. Contemporary photograph by Joseph Eta.
