  • Knoll International Knoll - Petal Dining Table

Knoll International Knoll - Petal Dining Table
Knoll already presented the Petal dining table in 1960. The table was immediately included in the exposition of the MoMA in New York because of the harmonic shape Richard Schultz gave to it. The Petal table was developed as suitable counterpart for the Bertoia chairs by Harry Bertoia. The surface of the Petal is shaped out of eight “petals”, placed on top of the handmade aluminium frame. Petal was inspired by the “Wild carrot” Dancus carota) , a plant spread in North America and Europe, whose surface makes us think of the Petal dining table: Each part of the flower is held by an own stem. This is how the dining table by Knoll doesn’t need any surrounding rings and it has harmonic and organic shapes, which is wonderfully suitable to be used outside. The frame of the Petal dining table is made of stainless steel and aluminium, the table top is made of polyurethane. Nylon pads protect the surface of the design classic from Richard Schulz and a lower version of the floral table is also available on demand.

Knoll International Knoll - Bertoia Outdoor Bench
The simple shape of the Bertoia bench was the first sketch of the Italian designer for Knoll. The design of 1952 clearly shows the enthusiasm of working with metal, characteristic in the Bertoia products. Harry Bertoia wasn’t the kind of designer that researched a lot for his creations. His inspiration had to come from the inside. This was how the Bertoia bench emerged, which showed all the typical characteristics of the designer’s works for the first time: The usage of tubes and wire of metal. The metal base gives the unmistakable character to the Knoll Bertoia bench, and the visual simplicity makes it unobtrusive, timeless and suitable for all kinds of surroundings at the same time. Knoll produces the Bertoia outdoor bench with a frame out of welded steel tube with Rilsan coating and battens out of teak wood or acrylic stoneware. Acrylic stoneware is a mixture of aluminium, acrylic resin and natural pigments. The aluminium reinforces the material, while the plastic makes the whole construction easily cleanable, water resistant and vivid regarding the colour. Teak wood is also predestined to be used outside: Teak is water repellent, wear-resistant, form stable and weatherproof. These qualities make the Bertoia bench perfectly suitable to be used on the terrace, the balcony and the garden. The Bertoia outdoor bench is also available with other legs (black, white, stainless steel).

    Knoll Schultz Petal Dining Table
Design Richard Schultz, 1960. Aluminum, Steel, HPDE or Teak. Made in USA by Knoll. "The Petal table is a flower that is always in bloom." - Richard Schultz. "I designed the Petal Table to accompany the Bertoia Chairs that Harry Bertoia designed for Knoll. The tops on these tables are made of eight petals, which are mounted on a beautifully crafted cast aluminum spider. I was inspired by Queen Anne's Lace, a weed that grows near our house in Pennsylvania. Each cluster of flowers is supported on its own stem. By making a table in this manner there is no need for a ring support, and each petal is independent which allows the table to expand and contract with the weather." The tables were introduced by Knoll in Los Angeles in 1960 and were immediately made part of the MoMA Design Collection. After 20 years, Knoll and Richard Schultz are together again, offering a comprehensive collection of durable, modern, and iconic outdoor furniture. Richard Schultz is no stranger to Knoll. He previously worked with Harry Bertoia during the development of Bertoia's wire chairs and later designed the Petal Collection to accompany the Diamond Chair. In 1992, Richard Schultz began his own furniture manufacturing and design company, where he and his son, Peter, have been able to build an impressive line of outdoor furniture collections including Topiary, Swell, and Mateo. Now, after 20 years, Knoll and Richard Schultz are together again, providing distinctive modern outdoor furniture. The Petal collection features an aluminum and stainless steel base and stem powder-coated in a variety of colors. The top petals are offered in either white machined HPDE (High Density Polyurethane) or vertically grained Teak with a natural finish. The collection is completed by the coffee and side tables. Suitable for the outdoors. Optional grey vinyl cover is also available. 28" h | 42" dia.

Whether chrome plated, satined or coated for outdoors (Rilsan-protection coating), the wire netting of the Harry Bertoia designed and by Knoll produced Diamond chair served as inspiration source for new ideas for generations of aspiring young designers. The Diamond armchair is part of a whole series of chairs, loungers and stools, designed by Harry Bertoia in the beginning of the 1950s. All of the furniture with this wire netting frame are produced and welded by hand in a highly complicated procedure. The trained sculptor and silversmith Bertoia – who saw his chairs as “research in room, form and metal” - placed and slightly pulled a square at its top – interplay of forms with a pleasant result: The armchair is weightless and comfortable. The Diamond chair by Bertoia is exposed in many collections of famous design museums today. It has a classic modern design, which enlarges every surrounding. Its filigree shape reminds us more of a sculpture than of an armchair, but the Diamond chair is still extremely comfortable and it fulfils all the practical demands of seating furniture. The Bertoia Diamond armchair remains a fascinating study out of bent round-tubes and it is an icon among sitting furniture. Knoll offers the Diamond chair in different editions: Fully upholstered, with chrome plated or satined frame, as well as with a frame with Rilsan-protection coating as outdoor model. There are suitable cushions for the Diamond Chair by Knoll optionally. Moreover the Diamond armchair is available in an XL edition and as smaller children edition. Knoll Schultz Petal End Table
The collection is completed by the coffee and dining tables. Suitable for the outdoors. 19" h | 16" dia.

Design Harry Bertoia, 1953. Welded steel rods. Made in USA by Knoll. Harry Bertoia's 1950 experiment with bending metal rods into practical art produced a revered collection of seating, including this previously unreleased piece. Innovative, comfortable and strikingly handsome, the chair's delicate appearance belies its strength and durability. In Bertoia's own words, "If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them." Harry Bertoia designed the Asymmetric Chaise in the early 1950s, but the chair was never produced beyond the prototypical form. Sculptural, airy, and breathtaking in shape and form, the Asymmetric chaise is considered to be a masterpiece of mid-century American furniture. The Asymmetric Chaise can be specified unupholstered, with a seat cushion, or with a full cover. Available in chrome or white outdoor finish.
