"I designed the Petal Table to accompany the Bertoia Chairs that Harry Bertoia designed for Knoll. The tops on these tables are made of eight petals, which are mounted on a beautifully crafted cast aluminum spider. Olivares Aluminum Chair By Knoll
On a quest to create a perfect outdoor chair, Jonathan Olivares has designed a chair that is not too heavy, not too light, more comfortable than anything else, and smart enough should it make its way inside. The chair is constructed with a cast aluminum shell and extruded aluminum legs, allowing the chair to achieve its thin profile and organic shape without compromising its durability. Designed to give any space a jolt of color, the chair is offered in a lively palette of bright, electric hues. After graduating from Pratt Institute and the New School, Jonathan Olivares established his own design studio Jonathan Olivares Design Research (JODR) in 2006. The firm deploys a multi-angle approach to product and exhibition design, and research. For the research arm of his design consultancy, Olivares has completed an analysis of the American furniture industry for Domus, and a survey of the history of office chairs, supported by Knoll, and published in 2011 by Phaidon as “A Taxonomy of Office Chairs.” For the Olivares Aluminum Chair, developed for Knoll, Olivares eventually specified a die-cast aluminum shell, a technique that allows for optimum comfort, durability, and weight. Features: Suitable for outdoor use. Shell is constructed of die-cast aluminum with outdoor powder coat paint. Leg tenons are integrated in the shell and a subtle reveal transitions the shell to the extruded aluminum legs. Legs are secured to the shell using epoxy and stainless steel fasteners. Chairs stack 6 high on the floor and 10 high on optional dolly. Stacking bumper distributes the chair’s weight over a wide area. Designer’s signature and the KnollStudio logo are located under the seat. Nylon glides included. GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certified. This product is available in more colors and finishes.

Knoll International Knoll - Petal Dining Table
Knoll already presented the Petal dining table in 1960. The table was immediately included in the exposition of the MoMA in New York because of the harmonic shape Richard Schultz gave to it. The Petal table was developed as suitable counterpart for the Bertoia chairs by Harry Bertoia. The surface of the Petal is shaped out of eight “petals”, placed on top of the handmade aluminium frame. Petal was inspired by the “Wild carrot” Dancus carota) , a plant spread in North America and Europe, whose surface makes us think of the Petal dining table: Each part of the flower is held by an own stem. This is how the dining table by Knoll doesn’t need any surrounding rings and it has harmonic and organic shapes, which is wonderfully suitable to be used outside. The frame of the Petal dining table is made of stainless steel and aluminium, the table top is made of polyurethane. Nylon pads protect the surface of the design classic from Richard Schulz and a lower version of the floral table is also available on demand.

Knoll International Knoll - Bertoia Outdoor Bench
The simple shape of the Bertoia bench was the first sketch of the Italian designer for Knoll. The design of 1952 clearly shows the enthusiasm of working with metal, characteristic in the Bertoia products. Harry Bertoia wasn’t the kind of designer that researched a lot for his creations. His inspiration had to come from the inside. This was how the Bertoia bench emerged, which showed all the typical characteristics of the designer’s works for the first time: the usage of tubes and wire of metal. The metal base gives the unmistakable character to the Knoll Bertoia bench, and the visual simplicity makes it unobtrusive, timeless and suitable for all kinds of surroundings at the same time. Knoll produces the Bertoia outdoor bench with a frame out of welded steel tube with Rilsan coating and battens out of teak wood or acrylic stoneware. Acrylic stoneware is a mixture of aluminium, acrylic resin and natural pigments. The aluminium reinforces the material, while the plastic makes the whole construction easily cleanable, water resistant and vivid regarding the colour. Teak wood is also predestined to be used outside: Teak is water repellent, wear-resistant, form stable and weatherproof. These qualities make the Bertoia bench perfectly suitable to be used on the terrace, the balcony and the garden. The Bertoia outdoor bench is also available with other legs (black, white, stainless steel).

    Knoll Saarinen Outdoor Dining Table
Design Eero Saarinen, 1957. Aluminum base, slate or engineered top, stainless steel hardware. Made by Knoll. In his purist approach to design, Finnish-born Eero Saarinen sought out the essential idea and reduced it to the most effective structural solution. "The underside of typical chairs and tables makes a confusing, unrestful world," explained Saarinen. "I wanted to clear up the slum of legs." In his pedestal collection, which includes a dining, coffee and side table, Saarinen realized his ideal of formal unity: "Every significant piece of furniture has a holistic structure." Winner of the 1969 Museum of Modern Art Award. Construction notes: Base is constructed from molded heavy cast aluminum polished and coated in tough, abrasion-resistant rilsan finish (black & white). Engineered Vetro Bianco top is offered in .75" thick with a beveled edge. It is bright white, nonporous and more compact than most granites. Comprised of 93% fused quartz. It does not yellow or stain and is scratch resistant. Suitable for outdoors. 28.25" h | top: 42.25" dia. | base: 20" dia.

Whether chrome plated, satined or coated for outdoors (Rilsan-protection coating), the wire netting of the Harry Bertoia designed and by Knoll produced Diamond chair served as inspiration source for new ideas for generations of aspiring young designers. The Diamond armchair is part of a whole series of chairs, loungers and stools, designed by Harry Bertoia in the beginning of the 1950s. All of the furniture with this wire netting frame are produced and welded by hand in a highly complicated procedure. The trained sculptor and silversmith Bertoia – who saw his chairs as “research in room, form and metal” - placed and slightly pulled a square at its top – interplay of forms with a pleasant result: The armchair is weightless and comfortable. The Diamond chair by Bertoia is exposed in many collections of famous design museums today. It has a classic modern design, which enlarges every surrounding. Its filigree shape reminds us more of a sculpture than of an armchair, but the Diamond chair is still extremely comfortable and it fulfils all the practical demands of seating furniture. The Bertoia Diamond armchair remains a fascinating study out of bent round-tubes and it is an icon among sitting furniture. Knoll offers the Diamond chair in different editions: fully upholstered, with chrome plated or satined frame, as well as with a frame with Rilsan-protection coating as outdoor model. There are suitable cushions for the Diamond Chair by Knoll optionally. Moreover the Diamond armchair is available in an XL edition and as smaller children edition. More details: Characteristics: A classic, modern design which enlarges every surrounding. The Harry Bertoia Diamond armchair remains a fascinating research out of bent round-tubes and an icon of the middle century. Available fully upholstered or only with a cushion. The Logo “Knoll” is engraved in the frame. Construction: Welded steel construction which is available high-glossy/ satined or with a white/ black Rilsan coating. The upholstery is tensed over the seat and fixed with hooks. The cushions are fixed with flaps and buttons. The edition without upholstery in Rilsan is also suitable for outdoors. Surfaces: The Diamond armchair is available highly glossy or satined chrome-plated and with Rislan coating (black or white). The armchair is available whether with a cushion or fully upholstered. Awards: Designer of the Year, USA, 1955 / Certificate of Merit, American Institute of Architects / Design Center Stuttgart Award, Germany, 1962.

Knoll International Knoll - Barcelona Lounger
The seating furniture that has been designed in the end of the 20es by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for the German pavilion of the world exposition in Barcelona, counts to the absolute classic today, deservedly. On one hand because the ensemble of the clear pavilion made the cold lifestyle famous later – becoming the “International Style”. On the other hand, because there are historic references. That is how Greek folding chairs (scissor- or driving-chairs as throne for gods and monarchs) served as inspiration. More or less this is a new-time throne (without folding function). In reality, the furniture pieces for the Barcelona pavilion fulfilled highly representative purposes in their initial context: They should serve as royal chairs during the opening ceremony of the world exposition in Barcelona. This conception stands in contrast to the social, even socialistic aims, which was kept by many protagonists of the “New Constructing” at that time. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe used band steel and leather upholstery on the world exposition in celebrity white. The chair Barcelona was a luxury furniture and moreover hardly suitable for the series. The frame had to be welded sophistically by hand, which meant that the chair could be firstly produced in a changed version from 1948 on. However, it is a really innovative design which enlarged the repertoire of modern times. The separate seat and back cushions “fall” by themselves into the desired position. Thereby the lounger wins its apparent attractiveness, not at last because of the contrast of the swung frame to the more static acting leather modules. More details: Characteristics: A signed KnollStudio-Furniture, which is manufactured with Mies van der Rohe initial specifications. In 1953 the designer offered exclusive market and production rights to Knoll. Also a children’s edition of the Barcelona Stool is available. The logo KnollSTudio and the signature of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe are imprinted in every furniture piece. Construction: The chromed frame is high gloss polished by hand. Each cushion consists of 40 single leather pieces that are hand-cut, sewed and equipped with seams and buttons out of one skin. The viewable side of the straps have been coloured suiting the upholstery. Surface: Available in different spinneybeck-leathers. The frame is chromed and polished. Awards: Award of the Museum of Modern Art, 1977.

Petal Collection Tables with White Petals: The Petal Collection was originally designed by Richard Schultz to accompany the Bertoia Chairs that Harry Bertoia designed for Knoll. The tops on these tables are made of eight petals, which are mounted on a beautifully crafted cast aluminum spider. Richard Schultz was inspired by Queen Anne's Lace, a weed that grows near his house in Pennsylvania. Each cluster of flowers is supported on its own stem. By making a table in this manner there is no need for a ring support, and each petal is independent which allows the table to expand and contract with the weather. The Petal Tables were introduced by Knoll in Los Angeles in 1960 and were immediately made part of the MoMA Design Collection.
