    notNeutral City Plate - Shanghai
Part of our first collection of City Plates. The theme of the first collection is City as Gateway. The theme of the first collection is City as Gateway and the cities chosen are Los Angeles, Shanghai, Cairo and Berlin. With this theme we asked: how is each city dealing with the effects of agglomeration as its population begins to reach critical mass? Shanghai. Shanghai, the largest commercial and financial power in China, is one of the largest ports in Asia. Its central location on China"s Pacific coast has made the city a major gateway between China and the Western world. The city"s urban center has a unique organic form, caused in part by the wide curve of the Huangpu River, which bisects the city and comes across as a dramatic swath of blue on the plate. The areas allotted to foreign powers after the Opium Wars – the British, French, and Americans – reflect the grid-form of traditional Western city planning. These porcelain plates measure 12” across, with each city"s downtown core printed on a black background. Key buildings are represented with persimmon icons, while rivers and public spaces are shown in blue and green. Each plate is boxed and includes a key to the buildings and spaces included on the plate. 12" diameter. Dishwasher safe. Boxed with Printed Key.

notNeutral Garden Plate - Central Park: Great Lawn
The Garden Plate collection features notable urban parks and gardens from around the world. While the color palette and graphic language coordinate with our existing City Plate collection (so you can intermix), the Garden Plates focus on the contrast between the organic elements of the highlighted park and the surrounding urban context. The first series showcases New York City's Central Park, the first large-scale (843 acres) public space in the United States, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in 1858. Each of the four plates highlights a different segment of the Park: the Sheep Meadow, the Great Lawn, the Reservoir, and the North Meadow. Each plate articulates the park's intricate network of roads and bridle paths, trees, and bodies of water to convey the landscape design and to trigger memories of places visitors may have strolled, ridden bikes, played softball, or picnicked. Garden Plate – Central Park: Great Lawn. Great Lawn – Situated at the geographical center of the park, the Great Lawn is one of the most famous greens in the world. This lush carpet is the stage for countless softball games, music performances, and picnics, but it is also an ideal spot for sunbathing or just admiring the park"s forest of more than 20,000 trees. The nearby Belvedere Castle also offers panoramic views of other landmarks in this area, including Turtle Pond, the densely wooded 30-acre Ramble, and the Delacorte Theater. As the summer home of the Public Theater, the Delacorte attracts an international audience of over 100,000 for free outdoor stage performances of Shakespeare and other classic works. Another major attraction in this area is the picturesque Lake, which is populated by rowboats from spring through fall. Other features include the Conservatory Water and Kerbs Boathouse, which is a popular site to launch model boats. Also of note is Strawberry Fields, the memorial to John Lennon in the area adjacent to the stately Dakota apartment building, where he made his home. This section of the Park is flanked to the west by the American Museum of Natural History and Hayden Planetarium, and to the east by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. 12" diameter. Dishwasher safe. Boxed with Printed Key.

Garden Plate – Central Park: North Meadow. North Meadow– Far from the incessant hum of midtown, the northernmost portion of the Park is a remarkably peaceful zone. This secluded area is home to the North Woods, which were designed to recall the nearby Adirondack Mountains. Also in this quiet corner is the Harlem Meer (a Dutch word for lake), a thriving habitat for fish, turtles, and waterfowl. In contrast to these wildlife oases, the six-acre Conservatory Garden on the eastern edge of the Park is a sampling of traditional formal gardens. It is composed of 3 smaller gardens each with a distinct style: Italian, French, and English. This segment of the Park is bordered by Harlem to the north, East Harlem to the east, and the northern end of Museum Mile, home to the Museum of the City of New York, El Museo del Barrio, and the Africa Center at the northeast corner of the Park. 12" diameter. Dishwasher safe. Boxed with Printed Key.

Grand Army Plaza serves as the official gateway to the Park's southeastern corner. Visitors who enter the Park from midtown encounter popular destinations like the Pond, the Zoo, Wollman Rink, and the Carousel. The expansive 15-acre Sheep Meadow is the most famous lawn in the Park. Once home to a flock of purebred sheep, this site has hosted everything from demonstrations to concerts, not to mention a regular audience of sunbathers and kite flyers. Another prominent feature is the 12,000-foot-long Mall, populated by one of the largest remaining stands of rare American Elms. Notable architectural landmarks in the neighborhood surrounding the Park include the Museum of Art + Design at Columbus Circle, Carnegie Hall, the Plaza Hotel, and the Frick Collection. 12" diameter. notNeutral City Plates-Collection 2
Collection 2 of four City Plates the theme of which is Culture and Capital(ism): New Orleans, Washington DC., Las Vegas and Dubai. notNeutral has introduced four more 12” City Plates. The theme is Culture and Capital(ism) and the chosen cities are New Orleans and Washington, D.C., both rich in history and culture, and the booming megalopolises of Las Vegas and Dubai. Our notion of how cities arise (if antiquated) usually follows an organic model—a natural feature of the earth"s topography lends itself to the support of human existence, and provides the foundation for human progress (a bottom-up process.) But in the current age of man"s virtually complete control of the environment, cities can be fabricated almost instantaneously (in geological terms) and at the whim of greater and greater feats of civil engineering (a top-down process.) If culture and capital are two of the elements that define a successful society, what happens when they are used as preconceived notions, planned into a city rather than spontaneously resulting from the natural course of a city"s development over time? That is, how does a capital investment in manufacturing culture impact city form? New Orleans, Washington DC., Las Vegas and Dubai. 12" diameter Porcelain. Individually boxed with Key.
