    Artifort Oyster Lounge Chair
Design Pierre Paulin, 1960. Foam upholstered shell, chrome frame. Made in The Netherlands by Artifort. "A chair should be more than simply functional. It should be friendly, fun and colorful." -Pierre Paulin. True design is timeless. It survives all trends. Without aging. Take Oyster for instance. Modern, exciting, smart, respectable, comfortable. One of the first designs in the Classic Collection and 'the easy' chair of the sixties. The chromed metal base is so minimalist that the seating shell seems to float. All over the world, this chair decorated, and still decorates, the living areas of Artifort fans with a feeling for style. The Oyster was in the Artifort collection until 1979 and by request, it was brought back into the collection in 1999. Pierre Paulin studied stone carving and clay modeling at the Ecole Camondo in Paris in the early fifties where he began designing furniture for Thonet. In 1958, he became the designer for Artifort where he created a series of sculptural chairs with an inner structure of steel tubing, covered in foam and fabric. • Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand LC3 Grand Modele Armchair – Chrome Frame/Blk Leather
    dwr.com
Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand LC3 Grand Modele Armchair – Chrome Frame/Blk Leather
The Le Corbusier group referred to their LC2 and LC3 collections (1928) as "cushion baskets," which they designed as a modernist response to the traditional club chair. These pieces reverse the standard structures of sofas and chairs by having frames that are externalized. With thick, resilient pillows resting within the steel frames, the idea was to offer all the comfort of a padded surface while applying the elegant minimalism and industrial rationale of the International Style. The color-saturated frames and fabrics were chosen from the color palettes or "color keyboards" that Le Corbusier developed in the 1930s and 1950s. Each color was chosen for its spatial and physiological effects, and Corbu's palettes allow each hue to match the others -go ahead and pair any fabric with any frame. Each piece is signed and numbered and, as a product of Cassina's Masters Collection, is manufactured by Cassina under exclusive worldwide license from the Le Corbusier Foundation. Made in Italy. The differences among the collections are that the LC2 is more compactly scaled, and the LC3 has the option of either down- or Dacron-wrapped cushions. This piece is available in leather upholstery with a chrome frame or a choice of three fabrics with seven different frame colors. In the fabric pull-down menus below, the frame color is listed first. See "additional views" for frame and fabric swatches.
  • Artifort Tulip Chair

    Artifort Tulip Chair
Design Pierre Paulin, 1965. Upholstery, polished swivel base, chrome. Made in Holland by Artifort. "A chair should be more than simply functional. It should be friendly, fun and colorful." -Pierre Paulin. As if Pierre Paulin had premonitions of Flower Power, the simple Tulip spreads its half-open petals around the sitter, inviting and warming at the same time. The Tulip is stately with a high back, which is an eminently comfortable armchair. With its matching footstool, it makes a strong and yet exceptionally comfortable combination. In 1968, Paulin collaborated with Le Mobilier National and received many important government commissions including furniture and interiors for the Elysee Palace in Paris. He also designed home appliances. Restored to its place of honor - the Tulip chair has been reintroduced with its original cross-base. Having once fallen from favor due to the arrival of the swivelling disk base, it can now be admired in all its original glory. The metal-strip cross-base looks lighter and airier than the disk and gives the Tulip an elegant twist. 35" W | 32" d | 37" h | seat: 15" h. Matching ottoman also available.

    Herman Miller® Eames® Lounge Chair
Design Charles & Ray Eames, 1956. Molded plywood, die-cast aluminum legs, leather upholstery. Made by Herman Miller® "Who would say that pleasure is not useful?" -Charles Eames. The Eames lounge chair is the culmination of Charles and Ray Eames' efforts to create comfortable and handsome lounge seating by using production techniques that combine technology and handcraftsmanship. Its heritage goes back to the molded plywood chairs pioneered by the Eameses in the 1940s. The Eames lounge chair is considered among the most significant and collectible furniture designs of the 20th century and is part of the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art. Charles Eames said his goal for the chair was the "warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman's mitt." Every one is a special refuge from the strains of modern living. The first lounge chair, produced in 1956, was a birthday gift for friend Billy Wilder, the Academy Award-winning film director, and it made its public debut on Arlene Francis' Home show, which later became the Today show. With a grand sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned their curiosity and boundless enthusiasm into creations that established them as a truly great husband-and-wife design team. Their unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Playful and functional. Sleek, sophisticated, and beautifully simple. That was and is the "Eames look." Every lounge chair manufactured since the original has received the same meticulous handcrafted attention. The rich veneer and supple leather suggest old-fashioned luxury translated into modern forms, setting an enduring standard for comfort and elegance. In addition, the lounge chair is now available in a veneer called santos palisander, a lustrous veneer that has the same characteristics as the original rosewood, color and grain. The chair has 6-inch thick urethane foam cushions and rich leather upholstery available in your choice of colors. The wood is harvested exclusively from sustainably managed forests and is available in five finish options. All pieces are hand assembled with a built-in swivel mechanism. Artek Kiki Lounge Chair
Design Ilmari Tapiovaara, 1960. Lacquered steel frame, PU foam & dacron, upholstery. Made in Finland by Artek. Tapiovaara wanted to design inexpensive furniture for a broader audience. He made use of materials that were readily available in Finland in the 1940s, such as solid birch. Later in the 1950s, he began to develop multipurpose chairs made of steel tubing and plywood. Ilmari Tapiovaara designed Kiki in 1960. It was originally conceived as a chair whose stackability allowed it to be used to seat large groups, such as in auditoriums. In the Kiki series Tapiovaara employed a more clean cut design idiom instead of the more organic style he had favored previously. Instead of wood, he chose oval steel tubing as the structural and unifying element of the whole Kiki collection. Kiki was a success, establishing the current direction for furniture design at this time. Kiki's timeless and elegant design idiom has made it one of the most popular pieces of public furniture in Finland. Llmari Tapiovaara was one of the greatest interior architects and designers of his era. With the mind of an explorer and a soul of a craftsman, Tapiovaara was always seeking for new solutions to improve everyday objects. During his long career Tapiovaara created dozens of iconic objects loved by the public. He was revered as a master of characteristic and human objects and surroundings who captured the essence of Finnish identity. Ilmari Tapiovaara was awarded a total of six gold medals at the Milan Triennials as well as many other important awards throughout his career. 23.6" W | 29.5" d | 26.7" h | seat: 15.4" h.

    Kartell Joe Colombo 4801 Armchair
Design Joe Colombo. Transparent or batch-dyed PMMA. Made in Italy by Kartell. For the first time in its 60-year history, Kartell will pay homage to one of the most iconic - and perhaps uncharacteristic - pieces in its archive with the reissue of Joe Colombo's 4801 Armchair. Originally designed by the Italian master in 1965, the 4801 chair is famous for being the only Kartell piece ever to be made entirely of wood. Now, nearly fifty years later, Kartell has developed the complex and technically challenging engineering methods necessary to produce the design as originally envisioned, in its signature plastic. An authentic symbol of design in the '60s, the highly sought-after 4801 chair is revered by private collectors and institutions alike, and has been displayed internationally at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The second generation of the 4801 chair is to be available in a numbered series beginning in February 2012, captures the curving sinuous lines and exact proportions of Colombo's design, now in sleek transparent or white and black plastic (PMMA). Joe Colombo, in his design utopia, gathered many of the common hopes of the 60's in Italy and Europe but was never slave to ideological bounds. His extremely fast escalation in becoming an internationally known designer brought him three medals at the XIII Triennale in Milan, the 1967 Compasso d'Oro award and creations which are included in permanent collections around the world. 24.4" W | 25.2" d | 27.2" h | seat: 9.8" h.

    Vitra C1 Lounge Armchair
Design Verner Panton, 1959. Laminated body, foam, upholstery, stainless steel. Made in Germany by Vitra. "Most people spend their lives living in dreary, beige conformity, mortally afraid of using color. The main purpose of my work is to provoke people into using their imagination and make their surroundings more exciting." -Verner Panton. Verner Panton's career as a designer first peaked at the end of the 1950's. With a series of furniture featuring basic geometrical shapes he pre-empted Pop Art ideas and yet with the base frames clearly adopted the elegance of Scandinavian Modernism. With the C1 armchair created around the same time, Verner Panton for the first time chose a section of a sphere. On swivel bearings and slightly tilted, the upholstered seat shell is astonishingly comfortable-both for relaxed sitting, leaning back and for upright sitting. The C1 can be integrated into private apartments, hotels or reception areas, cuts a fine figure in larger groups, and can be complimented by the matching stool. As one of the most influential and remarkable designers of the era, Verner Panton has created objects, spaces and art. His original, space age designs have won numerous awards and been exhibited in museums and private collections around the world. His ideaologies and design concepts are apparent and have had great influence on 21st century design. Chair: 29" h | 26" w | 22.75" d.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe MR Armchair
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s MR Chair was designed in 1927 as part of his contribution to the Weissenhof exhibit in Stuttgart, Germany. The chair’s cantilevered design uses tubular steel, then a technological novelty, to create an intuitively accessible and ergonomic seat. (When asked why he created chairs with generously sized seats, Mies van der Rohe allegedly replied that he designs chairs he’d be most comfortable sitting in.) The MR Armchair, still made to his specifications, is perfectly balanced, featuring the material innovation and lack of ornamentation that epitomize the International Style. The Armchair is manufactured by Knoll® according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in U.S.A. The MR Collection includes side chairs, armchairs and lounge chairs. This fully licensed classic was awarded the Museum of Modern Art Award in 1977 and the Design Center Stuttgart Award in 1978. The KnollStudio logo and Mies van der Rohe’s signature are stamped on the inside of one leg.

Joe D'Urso D'Urso Lounge Chair in Leather and Fabric
Whether designing interiors for residential homes, creating retail showrooms for Calvin Klein and Esprit, or developing furniture collections for Knoll, Joe D'Urso delivers elegant, livable solutions. Even the industrial "high tech"loft movement that he pioneered in the 1970s was about functional, comfortable living (albeit a bit stark compared with how D'Urso uses color these days). His D'Urso Collection (2008) for Knoll is an example of the warmer, more colorful Joe. Whether designing a room or an armchair, D'Urso always designs on a human scale. Made in U.S.A. An interesting mix of textures, this Lounge Chair is upholstered in both leather and fabric. The comfortable bouclé-upholstered cushions are nestled in a leather-upholstered frame. Suitable for commercial or residential use.

    hivemodern.com
    Vitra Monopod Lounge Chair
Design Jasper Morrison, 2008. Polyethylene, foam seat, upholstery. Made in Germany by Vitra. Jasper Morrison's Monopod is a sculptural piece, vaguely reminiscent of primordial stone or wooden objects. The Monopod stands sturdily, tapering with an elegant curve to a wedge-shaped backrest. As a small visitor armchair, the Monopod is a companion for sofas and larger armchairs, and in public areas, thanks to its solidity, can be used in lounges and reception areas. The structure of the armchair, with its plastic shell upholstered on the inside means that the Monopod retains its precise shape even if used for lengthier periods and is very comfortable. Born in London, Jasper Morrison studied design at the Royal College of Art and at the HdK in Berlin. Editor of the Design Year Book in 1999 with a passion for the history of design. Morrison's objects provide a quiet contrast to the creative exuberance of the Eighties. The visual restraint, high functionalism and constructive simplicity attract attention to his work. 29" H | 18.75" w | 29" d | seat: 14.5" h.

Knoll Saarinen Tulip Arm Chair - Black
Design Eero Saarinen, 1956. Aluminum base, fiberglass, upholstery. Made in USA by Knoll. In his purist approach to design, Finnish-born Eero Saarinen sought out the essential idea and reduced it to the most effective structural solution. He designed the 1956 Tulip chair in terms of its setting, rather than a particular shape. "In any design problem, one should seek the solution in terms of the next largest thing." he said. "If the problem is a chair, then its solution must be found in the way it relates to the room..." In Tulip Saarinen realized his ideal of formal unity: "Every significant piece of furniture has a holistic structure." Winner of the 1969 Museum of Modern Art Award, the Tulip is Saarinen's genius solution to clearing up the "slum of legs" that populates the under-carriage of most dining sets. Construction notes: Base is a cast aluminum, rilsan coated finish. Shell is molded fiberglass with a reinforced plastic bonded finish. Upholstered foam cushion is removable, with zippered cover and Velcro fastening. Finishes; Base and shell finishes available in White or Black. Upholstery; available with a seat cushion only or with a fully upholstered inner shell. 26" W | 23.25" d | 32" h | seat: 18" h | arm: 25.38" h.

Design David Chipperfield, 2008. Tubular steel, polyurethane foam, aluminum. Made in Italy by B&B Italia. For this project Chipperfield was particularly concerned with finding versatile, robust seating which would meet rigorous usage requirements while conveying a sense of refined luxury. This line of research has been combined with another theme that Chipperfield was keen to explore; that of obtaining comfortable soft seating from thin upholstered sections applied to a light and dynamic structure, using advanced industrial production techniques. David Chipperfield was born in London in 1953 and he obtained his Architecture Degree in 1977. In 1984 he founded the David Chipperfield Architects firm. With branches in London and Berlin, the firm is a multi-language and multi-cultural center. The 90 people who work for the firm come from 16 different countries and speak more than 22 different languages; a very important diversity to have because this multifaceted reality helps to constantly widen the procedural vision "from the inside". The molded plastic chairs are a flexible and comfortable seat with a variety of base options. Available in your choice of colors, which are permeated through the material so they remain vibrant even after years of hard use. The molded plastic seats are produced of ecologically friendly, recyclable polypropylene. The Eames plastic stacking chair is offered with a trivalent chrome finish base with your choice of shell color. New materials, especially those that held promise for doing more with less, fascinated the Eameses thoughout their careers. Plastic was no exception. They saw in it the chance to form organic seat shells that conform to the body's shape. The Eameses adapted manufacturing techniques developed during World War II to mass-produce this design in side and armchair versions. As they typically did, the Eameses required that materials be expressed honestly and unselfconsciously so these were the first one-piece plastic chairs offered without upholstery or covering. Their enduring design and quality construction make them durable performers in many environments. With a grand sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned their curiosity and boundless enthusiasm into creations that established them as a truly great husband-and-wife design team. Design Pierre Paulin, 1967. Tubular steel frame, upholstery. Made in Holland by Artifort. "A chair should be more than simply functional. It should be friendly, fun and colorful." -Pierre Paulin. Pierre Paulin designed Le Chat in 1967. Its tense curves seem to leap from a single point. Drawn with a single stroke of the pen. Without hesitation. You can feel the power, the readiness to leap. But it also invites you to sit. It's fully shaped to your body. Dynamic and restful. Now, in 2007, Artifort has re-introduced Le Chat. In 1968, Paulin collaborated with Le Mobilier National and received many important government commissions including furniture and interiors for the Elysee Palace in Paris. He also designed home appliances. Pierre Paulin's designs are true works of art. They are challenging. They inspire. But, above all, they are pieces of furniture that you can sit in. They are not form for the sake of form but applied design. 25.6" H | 30.3" w | 35.8" d | seat: 14.2" h.

About the Designer Joe Colombo Italy (1930 - ) Born in Milan in 1930, Joe Colombo studied at the Academy in Brera and then attended Architecture at the Polytechnic of Milan, which he left to run his father's business concern. In the early 50s, he devoted himself to informal painting and took part in the MAC, Movement of Concrete Art. In 1964, he was awarded the In-Arch prize for the furniture design of a hotel. He was awarded the Compasso d'Oro prize in 1967 and in 1981 and the SMAU prize in 1981. He developed for Bayer "Visiona 69", a habitat suggestion shown at the MOMA in New York. Kartell pays homage for the first time to one of the most iconic pieces in its museum with its re-edition of the 4801 armchair designed by Joe Colombo, an authentic symbol of design in the '60s, and now much sought-after in auctions of modern historical pieces. Well-known also for being the only piece produced by Kartell made entirely of wood, that same product can be made using today's industrial technology to reproduce the curving sinuous lines of the piece.

Design Charles Pollock, 2012. Steel frame, upholstery. Made in USA by Bernhardt Design. In 2012, the 82-year-old Charles Pollock introduced his first new product in America since the debut of his iconic Pollock Chair forty-seven years earlier. Likened by the iconic designer to a classic Jaguar sports car, the CP Lounge chair blends a sleek, aerodynamic stainless steel frame with a luxurious natural leather seat and exquisite craftsmanship to create a truly timeless functional piece of art. The CP lounge is available with either a classic hand-quilted seat reminiscent of vintage car upholstery, or with a streamlined contemporary seat with distinctive stitched-line detailing. Pollock's designs were governed by two principles. Creatively, he favored a continuous curved line when sketching ideas and creating forms. The second principle was that any product must be visually attractive, functional, and affordable. His designs were technically advanced, yet easy to manufacture at a reasonable price. Pollock is the recipient of numerous awards and his work is exhibited in many museums around the world. CP1 lounge chair features a polished stainless steel frame and a hand-quilted seat and back with a looped stitched cording tracing the perimeter of the chair. It is available in your choice of a variety of felt and leather upholstery options. You may select a contrasting looped stitching color from the selection provided, or Bernhardt Design will select the color that best matches the felt/leather selection. 27" W | 33.25" d | 28.5" h | seat: 16.4" h.

Vitra - Miniature Big Easy Chair
In 1988 and 1989, Arad’s London »One Off« work shop created an entire series of »Big Easy« armchairs using bent sheet steel welded at the edges. The »Big Easys« were brought out as individual items or small limited series; they all had a striking basic form and inflated arms reminiscent of comics – but they differed in terms of the welding and color. In the course of time, the initially oarse, roughly welded »Big Easys« went through changes, first becoming colorful lacquered chairs with smooth surfaces and then elegant versions made of polished stainless steel. Although Ron Arad’s furniture are variants on everyday things, they seem strange and irritate the eye – not only owing to the choice of material. Formally and functionally speaking, they undermine customary assumptions. You feel you have to first learn how to use them. A »Big Easy’s« voluminous steel body of the »Big Easy« resembles a traditional upholstered club armchair but can hardly be associated with a sense of comfortable interiors. Ron Arad considered it an art object that could likewise be functional, but was not intended to be particularly practical. The original of the Big Easy Chair was designed by Ron Arad in 1988 and it is produced as 1:1 model by Vitra AG, Basel/Switzerland, since 1998. The here offered miniature by Vitra (scale 1:6) consists of blackened stainless steel sheet metal.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe MR Adjustable Chaise Lounge
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s MR Chaise Lounge was designed in 1927 as part of his contribution to the Weissenhof exhibit in Stuttgart, Germany. The chair’s cantilevered design uses tubular steel, then a technological novelty, to create an intuitively accessible and ergonomic seat. (When asked why he created chairs with generously sized seats, Mies van der Rohe allegedly replied that he designs chairs he’d be most comfortable sitting in.) The MR Chaise Lounge, still made to his specifications, is perfectly balanced, featuring the material innovation and lack of ornamentation that epitomize the International Style. The Chaise Lounge is manufactured by Knoll® according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer.

    Vitra - Miniature Coconut Chair
In contrast to the trend of adapting sitting furniture to the requirements of the human body, George Nelson designs sitting objects from the formal repertoire of spontaneous, popular everyday culture. The shapes he used were strongly stimulated by the art of the 1950s. His symbolic statements promoted a new, very casual form of sitting. Nelson’s Coconut Chair was inspired by the coconut shell. The seat consists of a glass-fibre reinforced plastic shell with upholstery. The three-legged base of tubular steel is stabilized using fine crossbars. One has the impression that the frame spans the floating, swinging form taut and fixes it to the floor. The original of the Coconut Chair was designed by George Nelson in 1955 and it is produced as 1:1 model by the Vitra AG, Basel/Switzerland since 1988. The here offered miniature by Vitra (scale 1:6) consists of polished aluminium, steel sheet, foam and leather.

    Velas Lounge Chair By Wilkhahn
The design theme behind Velas is based on steel tube, a material used since the era of classical modernism. Popular since the 1960s, the principle of a supporting metal frame structure with upholstered seats and backrests is interpreted in a distinctive design. The elegant foot section becomes a fluid transition of front legs, side sections and rear horizontal brace, creating an especially informal, but purposeful look. The subtle, pure, streamlined shape, combined with the light, extremely compact upholstery lend the chair a soft look.

    Finn Juhl Model 45 Chair
Shortly before Finn Juhl became a world-renowned name, he was a self-taught furniture designer and trained architect who had just opened his own office. Working in collaboration with master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder, the pair was the buzz of the 1945 Cabinetmakers’ Guild exhibition with their expressive, sculptural pieces. One such item was the Model 45 Armchair (1945), which broke from tradition by freeing the upholstered areas from the wood frame. With the Model 45, Juhl refined the type of easy chair that he had been working on for many years; creating the type of elegant, tantalizing expression for which this designer is still without rival. This original is an authentic, fully licensed product of Onecollection, House of Finn Juhl™. Made in Denmark. Finn Juhl made his U.S. debut in 1951, at the “Good Design” exhibit in Chicago and at MoMA in New York. When Juhl was 39, he was the architect appointed to represent Denmark in creating the interior of a meeting hall at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
