    CH07 Low Chair
Made from form-pressed veneer, the wonderfully sculptural CH07 chair, or Shell Chair as it is more commonly labelled, was created by legendary Danish designer Hans J. Wegner. Since its inception in 1963, this low-back chair has become a much-loved symbol of mid-century modern design. Eminently comfortable, its floating form is highlighted by the wing-shaped seat and arching legs; it stands firm despite its distinctive three legs. Simultaneously minimalistic yet generous in its style and shape, the low-back frame gives it an unexpected elegant edge. The seat and back are available upholstered in fabric or leather. • Mater Shell Lounge Chair - Black Leather, Soaped Oak
    shophorne.com
Mater Shell Lounge Chair - Black Leather, Soaped Oak
The Shell Chair is developed out of Michael Dreebens ongoing interest in traditional craft practices in North India - in this case saddle making. Exquisitely made saddles have been produced in India for centuries, and although some horse culture persists, it's waning as India becomes more technologically developed. The Shell Chairs attempt to incentivize this skilled trade by providing these artisans with a new market for their craft, and hopefully encouraging them to pass it on to younger generations. The shape of the chair is an homage to Scandinavian design of the mid-twentieth century and embraces some of its core values: it's clean of line and is intended to emphasize the leather forming and stitching, it's deeply comfortable, and it's durable – like the saddles it's derived from, it's crafted from thick, top-grain leather, and with reasonable care, will last for decades. Frame: Soaped Oak. Leather: Black leather.

Hans J. Wegner Vitra Miniatures Collection: Shell Chair
Each handmade Vitra miniature is a classic in the history of furniture design reduced in size at a scale of 1:6. True to the original pieces in structure and, the miniatures are precision-crafted, making them a thoughtful gift for a furniture lover or design professional. Danish designer Hans J. Wegner preferred to work in solid wood, but occasionally he explored the use of bent plywood. Sometimes called the "smiling chair," his Shell Chair (1963) achieves a floating lightness due to its wing-like seat and the arching curves of its tapered legs. Wegner's belief that a chair "should be beautiful from all sides and angles" is especially evident with his Shell Chair. Each Vitra miniature comes handsomely packaged in a wood box with an informational booklet.

  • Charles Pfister Pfister Lounge Chair

    Charles Pfister Pfister Lounge Chair
Charles Pfister was our kind of modernist. 'There is a movement away from throw-away society, away from disposable possessions,” said Pfister. 'Instead, there is a mounting interest in useful, sculptural, wonderfully constructed objects.” His lounge collection (1971) is both sculptural and wonderfully constructed, embodying his intent to design items that display 'opulence without waste.” Pfister was based in San Francisco (another reason we’re fans) and had a measurable effect on the world of corporate interiors in the late 20th century. Looking at his timeless namesake collection, it’s easy to see why. Manufactured by Knoll according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in U.S.A. The Lounge Chair’s clean, tailored aesthetic makes it a smart choice for many commercial or residential settings. Short, inset legs give the Lounge Chair the appearance of floating slightly over the floor. Heirloom quality: the Pfister Collection features meticulous construction, timeless lines and high-quality leather upholstery. Charles Pfister was inducted into the Interior Design Hall of Fame in 1986.

    Cross Check Armchair By Knoll
Inspired by the surprising strength of the apple crates he had played on as a child, Frank Gehry created this thoroughly original collection of bentwood chair and table designs. Gehry's architecture draws its strength from the sculptural approach with which he has expanded the vocabulary of buildings. Bringing this same approach to furniture, Gehry constructed the entire collection with interwoven strips of maple. The ribbon-like designs transcend the conventions of style by focusing, as the great modernists did, on the essential challenge of deriving form from function. Features: Designed by Frank Gehry, 1990. Materials: Constructed of hard white maple veneer strips, laminated 6 to 9 thick with high-bonding urea glue. Thermo-set assembly glue provides structural rigidity without the need for metal connectors. Clear plastic glides with matte frost finish included. Chair back flexes for added comfort. To maximize tension compression, limited assembly glue is used in woven seat: weaves flex in unison for spring-like comfort. The underside of each piece is embossed with the Knoll logo and Frank Gehry’s signature. 1" thick high resiliency foam, fish-shaped seat cushion Available in a range of KnollTextiles and Spinneybeck leathers. Daisy Dining Chair By Manulution
This gorgeous chair brings warmth to the dining room with simple elegance and intricate hand-carved details. Its sculptural shape fits perfectly with the Daisy Dining Table , but its light and modernist appearance makes it a good companion for many dining room settings. The hand-carved floral motifs have a subtle appearance, but a touch of artistic expression to the piece. Daisy Chair is made in sustainably harvested wood. It is hand-finished using eco-friendly Danish Oil. This chair is a part of the Daisy Collection, which also includes: Daisy Dining Table , Daisy Side Table and Daisy Coffee Table. Manulution buys walnut and cherry logs from private orchards throughout Bosnia. These are trunks of old trees, which are cut when their productive life of fruit bearing is over and need to be replaced by new ones. They are bought directly from villagers, often in very small quantities, whenever it is offered. Other hardwoods (i.e. maple, oak, elm, and ash) are sourced from public forestry companies, the management of which has vastly improved in recent years. The forest certification process has started and several forests are FSC certified. There is also concrete evidence that forests are exploited sustainably. A recent forestry inventory (financed and supported by the World Bank) has shown that Bosnia's forest volume has increased significantly since the last inventory was conducted in 1960s. In fact, the study indicated that Bosnia, ostensibly, has more trees per capita than any country in Europe or Central Asia.

    Hat Trick Chair By Knoll
Inspired by the surprising strength of the apple crates he had played on as a child, Frank Gehry created this thoroughly original collection of bentwood chair and table designs. The Shell Chair developed out of Michael Dreeben’s ongoing interest in traditional craft practices in north India - in this case saddle making. Exquisitely made saddles have been produced in India for centuries, and although some horse culture persists, it’s waning as India becomes more technologically developed. The Shell Chairs incentivize these skilled tradesmen and women by providing the artisans with a new market for their craft, and hopefully encouraging them to pass it on to younger generations. Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand LC3 Grand Modele Armchair – Chrome Frame/Blk Leather
The Le Corbusier group referred to their LC2 and LC3 collections (1928) as "cushion baskets," which they designed as a modernist response to the traditional club chair. These pieces reverse the standard structures of sofas and chairs by having frames that are externalized. With thick, resilient pillows resting within the steel frames, the idea was to offer all the comfort of a padded surface while applying the elegant minimalism and industrial rationale of the International Style. The color-saturated frames and fabrics were chosen from the color palettes or "color keyboards" that Le Corbusier developed in the 1930s and 1950s. Each color was chosen for its spatial and physiological effects, and Corbu's palettes allow each hue to match the others -go ahead and pair any fabric with any frame. Each piece is signed and numbered and, as a product of Cassina's Masters Collection, is manufactured by Cassina under exclusive worldwide license from the Le Corbusier Foundation. Made in Italy. The differences among the collections are that the LC2 is more compactly scaled, and the LC3 has the option of either down- or Dacron-wrapped cushions. This piece is available in leather upholstery with a chrome frame or a choice of three fabrics with seven different frame colors. In the fabric pull-down menus below, the frame color is listed first. See "additional views" for frame and fabric swatches.

Modernica Eiffel Base - Fiberglass Shell Side Chair
The Case Study Fiberglass Eiffel Chair is a classic icon and its name holds no enigma. Pick your shell and choose the wire-frame in either chrome-plated steel or black powder-coated steel for a visually satisfying chair. Easily one of the most important and recognizable designs of the twentieth century. The Fiberglass Shell Chairs were originally designed by Charles Eames in 1948 as an entry in The Museum of Modern Art’s International Design Competition. At the time, no one could possibly have anticipated the massive success and longevity of this iconoclastic design. Modernica creates each shell, by hand, one-by-one, in their Los Angeles factory-just as they had been designed, developed, and produced by the Eames Office, here in Southern California in the 1950s. Modernica uses all of the original presses and specialized equipment obtained from Century Plastics. To ensure authenticity of production, the initial shell chair production was overseen by Sol Fingerhut and Irv Green, the same team Charles Eames employed over sixty years ago to develop the original technology. Modernica is committed to the legacy of the authentic genuine design of Charles Eames. Modernica creates each chair with the charge of adhering to the original tactile qualities, texture, and characteristics that alone are unique to the fiberglass shell chair. Our fiberglass chairs contain no (PBDE) Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers.

  • Norman Cherner Cherner® Armchair
    dwr.com
    Norman Cherner Cherner® Armchair
Although a pioneer in prefab housing, Norman Cherner is best known for his molded plywood seating line he created for – and ultimately sued – the manufacturer, Plycraft. After telling Cherner that his design for what is now known as the Cherner® Chair (1958) had been scrapped, Plycraft’s owner continued to produce it, claiming himself as the designer. The Chair’s popularity soared when it appeared in Norman Rockwell’s 1961 painting 'The Artist at Work” on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post. While Plycraft agreed to pay Cherner royalties, the line was out of production by the early 1970s. Then Cherner’s sons formed the Cherner Chair Company to revive the designs and produce them as their father originally intended. Made in U.S.A. This original is an authentic, fully licensed product of Cherner Chair Company. Cherner Chair is a licensed trademark of Cherner Chair Company. Constructed of laminated plywood of graduating thicknesses, from 5 ply at the perimeter edge of the seat to 15 ply at the slender waist, the design possesses exceptional structural strength and dramatic sculptural beauty. The arm is a single solid piece of bent beech with a walnut stain.
  • Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen Organic Highback Chair

Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen Organic Highback Chair
Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen met at Cranbrook Academy in 1936. Saarinen had just returned home from abroad and was teaching at the Academy, while Eames had accepted a fellowship at the prestigious school. During their time at Cranbrook, they collaborated on many projects, with their efforts culminating in a range of furniture that won first prize at the "Organic Design in Home Furnishings" exhibition held by the MoMA in 1941. Eames and Saarinen designed several versions of the sculptural Organic Highback Chair (1940) for the competition. However, due to manufacturing constraints, the chair never went into serial production. Exhibition curator Eliot F. Noyes wrote of Saarinen and Eames: "Their designs proposed for the first time the use of molded plywood forms for chairs to fit the human body. The jury, in awarding the prizes, decided that these designs were possible to construct, although nobody, including the technical experts present, had any very exact idea of just how it might be done." While molded plastic chairs would hit the market only a few years later, it wasn't until 2006 that Vitra and the Vitra Design Museum first produced the Organic Chair. Made in Germany. With a slightly reclined seating position, the Organic Chair is ideal for reading. The elongated backrest provides neck support.

In early 2007, designers Renzo Fauciglietti and Graziella Bianchi expanded on the success of their Bottega Side Chair with the introduction of a Bottega Armchair and Stool (2007). Both of the chairs are constructed with harmonic sheet steel backs that flex with users for continuous support. All three pieces are wrapped in smooth-as-silk stain resistant leather that's both luxurious and low-maintenance. Covering the slender but strong steel frames, the leather is hand-sewn to hug every angle and curve. The seats are lightly padded to encourage leisurely dining. This combination of suppleness and strength found in Bottega is not always easy to find in fixed seating. A choice of leather colors makes Bottega suitable for a variety of settings. Made in Italy.

Eero Saarinen Saarinen Executive Side Chair with Metal Legs in Leather
The design of Eero Saarinen's Executive Side Chair (1946) began more than a decade earlier, when he and Charles Eames submitted several designs to the Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition at the MoMA. The pair, who'd been friends and collaborators since meeting at Cranbrook Academy of Art, won first prize. These fluid, sculptural shapes influenced the future work of both men; for Saarinen, most notably in his Womb, Tulip and Executive chairs. The Executive was originally made of fiberglass but was later updated in polyurethane to take advantage of the technical advances in plastics. The feel of this classic seat, however, remains unchanged. The molded shell flexes slightly with the sitter and the contoured plywood seat supported by metal or wood legs. Unlike Saarinen's furniture, which was consistently sculptural in form, these fluid lines didn't appear in his architecture until the 1950s. When looking at the dome-shaped glass wall of the Kresge Auditorium at MIT, it's not a big leap to see the same shape in the back of his Executive Chair. This chair is Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certified; for its use of low-emitting products. Manufactured by Knoll® according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in U.S.A.

    Hans J. Wegner Easy Chair
'A chair is to have no backside,” said Hans J. Wegner. 'It should be beautiful from all sides and angles.” Sculptural and balanced, his Easy Chair (1950) embodies this maxim, a classic example of the 'organic functionalism” for which he is famous. Its natural elegance is exemplified by the paper cord that creates the seat and back – more than 1300 feet of cord is used on each chair. Handwoven by a skilled craftsperson, it’s a process that takes eight to 10 hours. The solid oak frame has fluid lines and exacting joinery, which is expertly assembled and requires no hardware. Relaxed and intuitively ergonomic, the Easy Chair is just that – a seat that can easily blend with modern or traditional interiors, in nearly any room in the house. Made in Denmark.

  • Vitra Jean Prouve Side Chair
    allmodern.com
    Vitra Jean Prouve Side Chair
Chairs take the most strain on their back legs, where they bear the weight of their user's upper body. Prouv took this into account very succinctly in Standard Chair. Tubular steel piping is enough for the front legs that take relatively little strain, whereas the back legs are made of voluminous hollow sections which pass the strain on to the floor. Choose from five frame/seat color combinations which will dramatically add to the decor of your home. Features: Powder-coated sheet steel and tubular steel frame. Seat and backrest in untreated oak or oak with dark stain. Varnished oak for natural wood effect. Design is the process by which almost all objects in Vitra's surroundings are instilled with a specific design and function - from cars to paper clips, from clothing to chairs. And design does not just mean giving things a shape. Design creates the basis which enables things to function in the desired manner. It is a process in which complementary but often mutually contradictory requirements have to be met (comfort, technology, ergonomics, ecology, economics, aesthetics). Design can be successful only when the balance of all these factors is attained. Once in the factory, Vitra staff manufacture furniture to precise standards, individually ensuring the quality of each product. Vitra has been certified for DIN EN ISO 9001: 2000. Vitra's focus on quality does not end at the factory door - they believe that providing clients with exceptional service is just as important as manufacturing furniture. In order to make certain Vitra clients enjoy consistently high quality in all Vitra products, they have set up their own test center which monitors products against criteria that are far more stringent than the statutory standards. Ergonomics is an applied science that studies the relationship between human beings and machines. Vitra produces furniture that responds to the ergonomic requirements of the body and as a consequence has a positive effect on health and well-being. All Vitra products (except for the experimental series Vitra Edition) have been tested by independent institutions. They comply with prescribed standards under the European Directive on VDU Work and are marked with the GS seal (= Gepr fte Sicherheit or Tested Safety, seal of the independent certification company LGA). Vitra's contribution to ecological conservation does not stop with a close examination of materials and processes. All aspects of the company's work involve ecological thinking. In 1991, Vitra set up an internal ecology committee to discuss environmental topics. This team identifies new tasks, and its project teams work together to find solutions. Vitra uses only non-CFC foams and adhesives free of toxic solvents; all possible materials are recycled. Wherever possible, Vitra uses recycled materials. Vitra's goal during production is to minimize noise and emission levels as well as to reduce waste. Packaging materials are kept to a minimum and re-used as often as possible. Jean Prouve collection.

Eames Lounge Chair Black Leather Cherry Frame
The first Eames lounge chair and ottoman was designed by Charles and Ray Eames as a gift for Billy Wilder, the director of classic film "Some Like It Hot.’ Making its public debut in 1956 on Arlene Francis's Home show, Charles Eames said his goal for the chair was that it be "a special refuge from the strains of modern living." The chair, which is manufactured by Vitra, is a contemporary and luxurious interpretation of the traditional gentlemen’s club chair with matching ottoman and has a sumptuous black leather seat that ensures a comfy seat. It combines modern sculptural lines of cherry wood veneer shells and removable supple natural leather upholstery to create a design classic that is comfortable and visually stylish. It has a die cast aluminium frame on shock mounts for flexible movement, a quirky signature five arm base and a functional swivel action.
