    dwr.com
Paulo Mendes da Rocha Paulistano Armchair
The work of Brazilian designer Paulo Mendes da Rocha reached international recognition when he was awarded the 2006 Pritzker Architecture Prize. That same year, we introduced his Paulistano Armchair (1957) – a classic that had never before been available in the United States. This chair was originally designed for the Paulistano Athletic Club in São Paulo, Brazil. The frame, a continuous 17-foot-long piece of solid steel, is welded in a single spot. This deceptively simple structure is then wrapped in almost an entire hide of leather that will gain depth and luster as it ages. Exceptionally comfortable, the Paulistano flexes slightly, and the sling can be adjusted up or down the frame for upright or relaxed sitting positions. The stainless steel frame is hand-machine polished and may exhibit markings consistent with hand craftsmanship. The frame in phosphatized carbon steel, which is the original raw material used in 1957, is slightly rough to the touch and will oxidize slowly with time. This was the intent of the architect, who wants the appearance to evolve, believing the charm of a piece of furniture resides in its non-permanent character. To prevent rust, the phosphatized frame should be treated with WD-40® twice annually. Made in France. Two frames to choose from: polished stainless steel or phosphatized carbon steel.

    Cross Check Armchair By Knoll
Inspired by the surprising strength of the apple crates he had played on as a child, Frank Gehry created this thoroughly original collection of bentwood chair and table designs. Gehry's architecture draws its strength from the sculptural approach with which he has expanded the vocabulary of buildings. Bringing this same approach to furniture, Gehry constructed the entire collection with interwoven strips of maple. The ribbon-like designs transcend the conventions of style by focusing, as the great modernists did, on the essential challenge of deriving form from function. Construction and Details Constructed of hard white maple veneer strips, laminated 6 to 9 thick with high-bonding urea glue. Thermo-set assembly glue provides structural rigidity without the need for metal connectors. Chair back flexes for added comfort. To maximize tension compression, limited assembly glue is used in woven seat: weaves flex in unison for spring-like comfort. 1” thick high resiliency foam, fish-shaped seat cushion Available in a range of KnollTextiles and Spinneybeck leathers. Clear plastic glides with matte frost finish included. The underside of each piece is embossed with the Knoll logo and Frank Gehry's signature. GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certified. Due to variances in color perception with a monitor, samples are available and strongly recommended.

    Artek Paimio Armchair 41
Design Alvar Aalto, 1931. Bent birch plywood. Made in Finland by Artek. "Objects are made to be completed by the human mind." -Alvar Aalto. Admired as much for its sculptural presence as for its comfort, the Paimio Chair (also known as chair 41) seems to test the limits of bent plywood manufacturing. The chair's framework consists of two closed loops of laminated wood, between which rides the seat-a thin sheet of plywood tightly bent at both top and bottom into sinuous scrolls, giving it greater resiliency. Inspired by Marcel Breuer's tubular-steel Wassily Chair of 1927-28, Aalto chose, instead, native birch for its natural feel and insulating properties, and developed a more organic form. Available in your choice of finish options. Alvar Aalto was a highly talented architect and an eager spokesman for the international modernist movement. Aalto's designs were innovative and radical and became known for his experimental approach to bending wood, which greatly influenced American designers Charles & Ray Eames and Finnish-born Eero Saarinen. His style became known as humanist modernism. Alvar Aalto's dialogue with nature, architecture, design and the human being has become a living legacy. 23.6" W | 31.5" d | 25.2" h | seat: 13" h.

Vitra - Prouvé Standard SP Chair
The Standard Chair, made in 1934, belongs to the classic pieces of design history. The characteristic Vitra chair by Jean Prouvé is desired again today. Inspired by the furniture competition for the Cité Universitaire of Nancy, Jeans Prouvé started to combine metal and wood in the 30s- He used the resistance of steel for the stability of the Standard Chair’s base. The backrest and the seat, parts that contact the user’s body, he made of shaped plywood. The characteristic shape of the Prouvé Standard Chair came from one deciding idea: The load of a chair lies on the back feet, the weight of the body must be held there. That easy recognition was realized by the designer and constructor Jean Prouvé on an embossing way: while the less loaded front feet are made of a steel tube, the back feet of the Vitra Standard Chair are voluminous hollow bodies, porting the load they carry to the ground. The Vitra Standard SP Chair is the modern edition of the chair classic of 1934: Vitra produces backrest and seat of plastic today. The quality of the Vitra Standard SP is shown in the convincing cleverness of its construction as well as in its aesthetics. The Vitra Standard Chair is also still available in the classic edition with wooden backrests and seats.

    Vitra - Fauteuil de Salon
Jean Prouvé was a master of making an aesthetic virtue out of functional necessities. His Fauteuil de Salon is a perfect example for that skill. The armchair, which was initially re-edited by Vitra in cooperation with the French furniture label G-Star was included in the permanent collection of Vitra. The Fauteuil de Salon was created 1939. Jean Prouvé was oriented by a standard chair when he designed his Fauteuil: Massive, conic back-legs contrast the slim legs of the front-side. This had a practical reason for the constructer Prouvé: A big part of the weight of the one relaxing in the chair remains on the back-legs, which is the reason why the legs have different sizes. The combination of simple surfaces completes the architectural image, with comfortable seat and backrest. The armchair was adapted to contemporaneity by Vitra regarding the colours, after it was found in the archives of the French constructor. Something typical for Prouvé is that the constructive model is knowingly presented becoming the aesthetic characteristic. Thick cushions contrast the technically cool base of the chair with its slim armrests. The Fauteuil de Salon is a comfortable lounge chair, which is made of powder coated steel by Vitra. The cushions consist of cotton with polyurethane filling and the armrests are made of massive oak wood. The armchair is available in different colours.

Carl Hansen & Son Ch25 Lounge Chair
Design Hans Wegner, 1949. Oak with hand-woven cord caning. Made in Denmark by Carl Hansen & Son. The special profile of the forelegs is probably this chair's most characteristic feature. Their unusual shape make them carry most of the user's weight and serve as a stable support for the armrests at the same time. Another interesting detail is the hind legs, which flush with the rail. The rope weaving of the seat and back form a distinctive pattern. The broad armrests add to the comfort of the chair and make it easy to get up from, even with its low seat height and reclining back. The moderate dimensions fit easily into interiors where space is a factor. The simple choice of materials give it a neutral appearance that make it blend in well. Hans J Wegner trained as a cabinet-maker before attending the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, where he later lectured from 1946 to 1953. From 1938 to 1942, he worked as a furniture designer in Arne Jacobsen and Erik Moller´s architectural practice. High Sticking Chair By Knoll
We offer the High Sticking Chair cushion in all KnollTextiles fabrics and Spinneybeck leathers available from Knoll (although we highlight only select favorites on this page). Distinctive sheet steel runners serve as the base, giving way to thick leather belt armrests that invite contact with their smooth tactility. The tobacco fabric has a red frame; the black fabric has a matching black frame. One of Prouvé's few designs that he used in his own home, the Cité Armchair is a compelling lounge option for residential and commercial spaces. Reproduced to exacting standards by Vitra. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe MR Armchair
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s MR Chair was designed in 1927 as part of his contribution to the Weissenhof exhibit in Stuttgart, Germany. The chair’s cantilevered design uses tubular steel, then a technological novelty, to create an intuitively accessible and ergonomic seat. (When asked why he created chairs with generously sized seats, Mies van der Rohe allegedly replied that he designs chairs he’d be most comfortable sitting in.) The MR Armchair, still made to his specifications, is perfectly balanced, featuring the material innovation and lack of ornamentation that epitomize the International Style. The Armchair is manufactured by Knoll® according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in U.S.A. The MR Collection includes side chairs, armchairs and lounge chairs. This fully licensed classic was awarded the Museum of Modern Art Award in 1977 and the Design Center Stuttgart Award in 1978. Magis Cyborg Elegant Armchair With Wicker Back
Design Marcel Wanders, 2011. Air-molded polycarbonate, wicker back. Made in Italy by Magis. A cyborg is an organism that has both artificial and natural systems. The term was coined in 1960 by Manfred Clynes. In 1965, D.S. Halacy's Evolution of the Superman featured an introduction which spoke of a 'bridge...between mind and matter.' Fictional cyborgs are portrayed as a synthesis of organic and synthetic parts. Often their presence calls into question the difference between humans and machines as concerned with morality, free will, and empathy. The friction we feel between the natural and the artificial world is in fact a misconception; as there is no artificial world, there is only a natural world under the influence of its very own nature. Marcel Wanders grew up in Boxtel, the Netherlands and graduated cum laude from the School of the Arts Arnhem in 1988. His fame started with the iconic Knotted Chair in 1996. He is now designing for the biggest European contemporary design manufacturers including Moooi of which he is also art director and co-owner. He works on architectural, interior design and consumer home appliances. His designs have been selected for the most important design collections and exhibitions around the world. Artek Lounge Chair 43
Design Alvar Aalto, 1937. Natural lacquered birch, linen webbing. Made in Finland by Artek. "Objects are made to be completed by the human mind." -Alvar Aalto. Another sculptural chair which seems to test the limits of bent plywood manufacturing. The Lounge Chair 43's framework consists of cantilevered laminated wood legs (which flex a bit for sitting comfort), between which the lounge is upholstered with linen webbing. Aalto chose to use native birch for its natural feel and insulating properties. The framework of Lounge Chair 43 is natural lacquered birch upholstered in your choice of natural or black linen webbing. 64.5" D | 27.5" h | seat: 16.1" h | arms: 20.8" h.

Magis Cyborg Club Armchair With Wicker Back
Design Marcel Wanders, 2011. Cyborg club armchair is offered with either white or black glossy polycarbonate legs with a natural or black wicker back. It is also offered as an elegant chair or full polycarbonate chair. 29.5" H | 22" w | 20.4" d | seat: 18.1" h.
