  • Tumblr Tuesday Lucy Hewett
    More info
We’re always scouring Tumblr for up-and-coming artists, photographers and interesting people to follow. On Tumblr Tuesdays we dig a little deeper, introducing you to a new person whose point-of-view we’re reblogging this week. Chicago-based photographer Lucy Hewett can do it all. From shooting musicians for Billboard to snapping shots of artfully arranged food, there's a little bit of everything in Lucy's portfolio. We're particularly fond of some of the more personal photos that Lucy has shared on her Tumblr, ranging from trips out to the deserts of New Mexico to the chilly shores of Boston. Her Instagram shots are often colorful, detailed close-ups of what she sees in her travels, the perfect companion to her Tumblr posts. Here, we take a look at some of our favorite photos from Lucy, and look forward to seeing what else she'll be snapping in the new year. • Thursday Tip-Off Get Moving
    More info
Our Thursday Tip-Off series is a weekly set of tips, suggestions, and tricks for making you a better-informed person. You're welcome. Since it's January, there's no better time to start fresh with everything, and if you've been thinking about ditching your couch potato ways, then now is as good a time as any. Ease your way into it with our tips below and you'll be #ripped before you can say 'smoothie bowl.' Lead photo by Anna Ottum Photo by Ellie Arciaga Lillstrom 1. If you've been wanting to be more active but aren't sure about when you'll have time to get a workout in, try to give yourself extra time before work. Even 45 extra minutes will be enough to get a few quick exercises in, even if it's just in the comfort of your own room. If you're not a morning, slowly start setting your alarm earlier and earlier for a week or two, depending on how bad you are at waking up. Once you've gotten yourself up a full 45 minutes earlier, you can focus on getting in your extra activity! 2. While you're working on waking yourself up early, it's important to remember to eat breakfast (even a small one) before getting active. Waking up and working out on an empty stomach is not ideal. If you're strapped for time, eating a small cup of yogurt and some almonds 20 minutes before your workout will give you the fuel you need to get going. Make sure to stay hydrated, too. Drinking water before and during your workout is just as important! Photo by Emily Knecht Photo by Ellie Arciaga Lillstrom 3. To get yourself in the workout mindset, get yourself one workout outfit that makes you feel good. You might not want to splurge on the fanciest workout pants you see (just in case you decide working out is for the birds and go back to watching Netflix after a month), but grabbing something that makes you feel good will have you feeling better than throwing on a pair of see-through leggings and a ratty sweatshirt. Sure, it doesn't really matter, but that little extra boost of confidence will help propel you from the warm cocoon of your bed and into the gym. 4. Okay, you're almost ready to work out! You're hydrated and ready to go. Before you jump into a workout, make sure you stretch, especially if this is the first time in, like, five years that you're doing any physical activity. If you're going to try running, make sure you stretch those legs out. Here's a handy infographic about the best stretches to do (and how). 5. Finally, it's time to get moving. If you're heading to the gym, try doing 20 minutes of cardio 4 times a week to start. Don't go nuts. You don't want to give yourself a heart attack your first week in the gym. Keep things light and slowly build your workout up over time. If you're going on the treadmill, alternate between walking and running. Even if you try to run for 60 seconds at a time, that's better than nothing! After you feel comfortable with your cardio, add in some time with weights - but make sure to ask someone at the gym for help or search for a routine beforehand. You want to make sure you're doing everything properly and not hurting your muscles. If you're doing exercises at home, it's best to follow along to a workout video on YouTube or Netflix. Give yourself a realistic goal (like exercising 3 times a week for a month straight) and when you beat it, go bigger! Photo by David Cabrera Photo by Anna Ottum Shop Without Walls
