First designed in 1947, the George Nelson Bubble Lamp Collection has stood the test of time. The simple structural shapes with the innovative use of taut plastic over fine steel wire were born from George Nelson's frustration to buy a Swedish-made silk lamp which produced a soft light. This unique use of shape and material produces a diffused light that is free of glare while offering an abundance of illumination. These pieces are part of the permanent collection in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and remain icons in modern lighting. Modernica discovered these designs and reintroduced the series in 1989 with a dedication to reproducing these stunning, classic lights with authenticity and craftsmanship. Modernica still uses the same materials and methods to hand craft each piece in their Michigan facility. The crisscross pattern the Crisscross Saucer Pendant adds a depth to the pattern with the same lighting qualities. It is available in 2 sizes, with 6 feet of cord and a 5.25 inch brushed nickel ceiling plate.

Architect George Nelson, who was Herman Miller’s design director from 1946 to 1972, said: “Every truly original idea seems to find its most important expression in a chair.” And then he blew the doors off lighting design. When Nelson was outfitting his office, he coveted a silk-covered Swedish hanging lamp but found it prohibitively expensive. He then recalled seeing a photo in the paper of Liberty ships being mothballed “by having the decks covered with netting and then being sprayed with a self-webbing plastic,” said Nelson. “And then, Whammo!” Inspiration struck, and by the next night, Nelson had designed his first Bubble Lamp® (1947), using a spray coating of translucent plastic polymer over a skeleton of steel wire. “When you put a light in it, it glowed.” A wide range of shapes and sizes are now available. • Modernica Lantern Bubble Pendant Light By George Nelson
    heals.co.uk
The Bubble Lamp was designed by George Nelson in 1947 as an innovative alternative to pendant lighting. Initially, it was produced by Howard Miller in 1952 and ceased production in 1979. In the 1990's Modernica reissued these timeless lamps, which are as evocative now, as they were back then. Nelson dressed the steel wire skeleton with a spray coating of translucent plastic polymer and created a lamp that simultaneously softens and anchors surrounding space. The Bubble Lamp is featured in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Adjustable cable length up to 180cm. Without question, the George Nelson Bubble Lamp Saucer Pendant is a tried-and-true standard of the modern vocabulary. George Nelson designed the first bubble lamps in 1947. These lamps with their simple sculptural shapes were constructed of an innovative taut plastic that coated a steel wire-frame. Nelson's unique design and ingenious use of materials prove to eliminate glare and provide an abundant, yet diffused light. A quality which alone is unique to this material. Since 1989, Modernica has proven itself with its steadfast commitment to authenticity and craftsmanship. Being at the forefront of rediscovering and relaunching out-of-production pieces, Modernica still uses the same methods and materials to handcraft each lamp that were used in 1952 with Howard Miller's first production run. From the forming of the wire-frame, to the spraying of the vinyl form, one-by-one, each Bubble Lamp is constructed to last decades and each Bubble Lamp is built to George Nelson's original specifications. The George Nelson Bubble Lamp collection is featured in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Handcrafted in Michigan, U.S.A. Dimensions : H27 x D28cm, 7kg. Nickel Ceiling Plate 13.5cm.
